    COVID-19: Is There Evidence for the Use of Herbal Medicines as Adjuvant Symptomatic Therapy?

    Background: Current recommendations for the self-management of SARS-Cov-2 disease (COVID-19) include self-isolation, rest, hydration, and the use of NSAID in case of high fever only. It is expected that many patients will add other symptomatic/adjuvant treatments, such as herbal medicines. Aims: To provide a benefits/risks assessment of selected herbal medicines traditionally indicated for “respiratory diseases” within the current frame of the COVID-19 pandemic as an adjuvant treatment. Method: The plant selection was primarily based on species listed by the WHO and EMA, but some other herbal remedies were considered due to their widespread use in respiratory conditions. Preclinical and clinical data on their efficacy and safety were collected from authoritative sources. The target population were adults with early and mild flu symptoms without underlying conditions. These were evaluated according to a modified PrOACT-URL method with paracetamol, ibuprofen, and codeine as reference drugs. The benefits/risks balance of the treatments was classified as positive, promising, negative, and unknown. Results: A total of 39 herbal medicines were identified as very likely to appeal to the COVID-19 patient. According to our method, the benefits/risks assessment of the herbal medicines was found to be positive in 5 cases (Althaea officinalis, Commiphora molmol, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Hedera helix, and Sambucus nigra), promising in 12 cases (Allium sativum, Andrographis paniculata, Echinacea angustifolia, Echinacea purpurea, Eucalyptus globulus essential oil, Justicia pectoralis, Magnolia officinalis, Mikania glomerata, Pelargonium sidoides, Pimpinella anisum, Salix sp, Zingiber officinale), and unknown for the rest. On the same grounds, only ibuprofen resulted promising, but we could not find compelling evidence to endorse the use of paracetamol and/or codeine. Conclusions: Our work suggests that several herbal medicines have safety margins superior to those of reference drugs and enough levels of evidence to start a clinical discussion about their potential use as adjuvants in the treatment of early/mild common flu in otherwise healthy adults within the context of COVID-19. While these herbal medicines will not cure or prevent the flu, they may both improve general patient well-being and offer them an opportunity to personalize the therapeutic approaches

    Stealth Assessment in ITS - A Study for Developmental Dyscalculia

    Intelligent tutoring systems are adapting the curriculum to the needs of the student. The integration of stealth assessments of student traits into tutoring systems, i.e. the automatic detection of student characteristics has the potential to re?ne this adaptation. We present a pipeline for integrating automatic assessment seamlessly into a tutoring system and apply the method to the case of developmental dyscalculia (DD). The proposed classi?er is based on user inputs only, allowing non-intrusive and unsupervised, universal screening of children. We demonstrate that interaction logs provide enough information to identify children at risk of DD with high accuracy and validity and reliability comparable to traditional assessments. Our model is able to adapt the duration of the screening test to the individual child and can classify a child at risk of DD with an accuracy of 91% after 11 minutes on average

    Modelling and optimizing mathematics learning in children

    This study introduces a student model and control algorithm, optimizing mathematics learning in children. The adaptive system is integrated into a computer-based training system for enhancing numerical cognition aimed at children with developmental dyscalculia or difficulties in learning mathematics. The student model consists of a dynamic Bayesian network which incorporates domain knowledge and enables the operation of an online system of automatic control. The system identifies appropriate tasks and exercise interventions on the basis of estimated levels of accumulated knowledge. Student actions are evaluated and monitored to extract statistical patterns which are useful for predictive control. The training system is adaptive and personalizes the learning experience, which improves both success and motivation. Comprehensive testing of input data validates the quality of the obtained results and confirms the advantage of the optimized training. Pilot results of training effects are included and discussed

    Symbolic Number Abilities Predict Later Approximate Number System Acuity in Preschool Children

    An ongoing debate in research on numerical cognition concerns the extent to which the approximate number system and symbolic number knowledge influence each other during development. The current study aims at establishing the direction of the developmental association between these two kinds of abilities at an early age. Fifty-seven children of 3-4 years performed two assessments at 7 months interval. In each assessment, children's precision in discriminating numerosities as well as their capacity to manipulate number words and Arabic digits was measured. By comparing relationships between pairs of measures across the two time points, we were able to assess the predictive direction of the link. Our data indicate that both cardinality proficiency and symbolic number knowledge predict later accuracy in numerosity comparison whereas the reverse links are not significant. The present findings are the first to provide longitudinal evidence that the early acquisition of symbolic numbers is an important precursor in the developmental refinement of the approximate number representation system.
