We just estimated twenty million fiscal multipliers

    Get PDF
We analyse the role played by data and specification choices as determinants of the size ofthe fiscal multipliers obtained using structural vector autoregressive models. The results, based on over twenty million fiscal multipliers estimated for European countries, indicate that many seemingly harmless modelling choices have a significant effect on the size and precision of fiscal multiplier estimates. In addition to the structural shock identification strategy, these modelling choices include the definition of spending and taxes, the national accounts system employed, the use of particular interest rates or inflation measures, or whether data are smoothed prior to estimation. The cumulative effects of such arguably innocuous methodological choices can lead to a change in the spending multipliers of as much as 0.4 points

Comparing the fit of New Keynesian DSGE models

The paper is focused on an analysis of model fit of Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium (DSGE) models following New Open Economy Macroeconomics (NOEM). Unlike most of the literature on the topic, this paper does not use Bayesian posterior odds ratio to analyze model fit to data; it uses alternative tools instead. In order to compare the results of the alternative tools to the standard posterior odds ratio, this paper uses the findings of Slanicay and Vašíček (2009), who compared model fit to data of several models with the tool Bayesian posterior odds ratio. The goal of the paper is to verify the results of Slanicay and Vašíček’s (2009) model variants with different criteria than posterior odds and to compare the results with findings of their paper. The tools for the analysis are criteria based on root mean squared error (RMSE) and tools from the Global Sensitivity Analysis toolbox. Conclusions of this paper are the following: Habit persistence in consumption is found to be important and price indexation unimportant as in Slanicay and Vašíček (2009). Furthermore, model variants with foreign economy modeled as AR1 processes always perform better than the ones with structurally modeled foreign economy. This finding is in contradiction to the results of Slanicay and Vašíček (2009)

Byla také prokázána citlivost komunikace bezdrátové ZIP telemetrie na rušení na frekvencích v pásmu SRD.The aim of this thesis is to assess the influence of electromagnetic non-ionizing radiation to cardiac pacemaker and the influence of communication between the cardiac pacemaker and the programmer. Electromagnetic compatibility is tested by direct induction of interference signal to the inputs of cardiac pacemaker according to ČSN EN 45502-2-1 standard and is also tested by generating of interference RF signals that are able to disable the communication using wireless ZIP telemetry, by the use of which cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators communicate with the programmer. For testing purposes a circuit of substitutive tissue has been assembled, to which a cardiac pacemaker has been connected, as well as the antenna for SRD band that radiated interference RF signal. It has been proved that the cardiac pacemaker is resistant against co-phasally fed modulated electromagnetic field to the circuit of substitutive tissue with the connected cardiac pacemaker set to synchronized mode using the signal from inhibitive generator. Based on this the resistance of cardiac pacemaker has been proved against the interference which can get into the cardiac pacemaker electrodes and its case through the real tissue of the patient. The cardiac pacemaker behaviour change can endanger the patient’s health. It has also been proved that the wireless ZIP telemetry communication is sensitive to the interference on the frequencies in SRD band.Prezenční455 - Katedra měřicí a řídicí technikydobř

The purpose of this project is to secure an object, for example bicycle, buggy, merchandise. Protecting device consists of a sensor unit and a pager unit. Both of these units contain a transceiver which works in ISM band. Operation circuits drive microprocessor AVR with low power technology because of possible battery supply. Sensor unit is monitoring the state of sensors and battery discharging. This unit can use accelerometer sensor and two contact sensors. The pager unit indicates alarm, the state of battery in both units and signalizes loss of connection.

To my undergraduate work, I approached in accordance with the solution of the modern detached house in pursuit of simplicity in both, form and structure itself. It is about a two-storey house with an practice area located in the new built-up district in Havlickuv Brod. Almost square bottom floor, which is partialy cut into the ground is used for business and the upper floor, which extends S-shaply towards the garden, is designed as a private part of the building with its own entrance. The main disposal idea thus was the separation of private area from public. From the construction point of view was an effort to use a suitable combination of materials for suppressing their disadvantages and thus for overall more comfortable usage of the building.

R.U.R., or Rossum’s Universal Robots is a play written in 1920 by Karel Čapek, a Czech writer who wrote many plays and novels, many of them with science-fiction and dystopian themes. R.U.R. is perhaps the most well-known of these works in the English-speaking world because it brought the word “robot” into the language. “Robot” is derived from the Czech word meaning “worker.” The play is set in the island headquarters of the R.U.R. corporation. The corporation has been manufacturing artificial beings which resemble humans, but who are tireless workers. They can be mass-produced in large numbers and are being adopted as workers in many countries. In the first scene of the play, they are visited by a young woman, Helena Glory, who aspires to relieve the lot of the robots, who she sees as oppressed. However, in what must be the fastest seduction scene in all drama, she is wooed and agrees to marry Harry Domin, the factory manager, who she has just met. She still however aspires to improve the life of robots and find a way to give them souls. Ultimately, however, this admirable desire leads to disaster for humankind. The play was translated into English, and slightly abridged, by Paul Selver and Nigel Playfair in 1923. This version quickly became popular with both British and American audiences and was well received by critics. [Abstract from Standard eBooks

    Visualization and Simulation in Scheduling

    Get PDF
This paper deals with the representation of scheduling results and it introduces a new tool for visualization and simulation in time scheduling called VISIS. The purpose of this tool is to provide an environment for visualization, e.g. in production line scheduling. The simulation also proposes a way to simulate the influence of a schedule on a user defined system, e.g. for designing filters in digital signal processing. VISIS arises from representing scheduling results using the well-known Gantt chart. The application is implemented in the Matlab programming environment using Simulink and the Virtual Reality toolbox.

Existence and Negativity: The Relevance of the Patočka–Bergson Controversy over Nothingness

In in the second half of the 1940s, Jan Patočka emphasized the essentially negative character of human existence. He thus found himself in the neighborhood of Sartre’s existentialism, Heidegger’s philosophy of being, and Hegel’s dialectic, and at the same time in opposition to schools of thought which either completely reject the substantive use of “the nothing,” such as Carnap’s positivism, or relativize it, like Bergson. It is the latter polemic, Patočka’s with Bergson, which is discussed in this article. The concept of negativity in Patočka basically refers to the idea that human existence is defined by a capacity to adopt a distance toward what is pre-given, be it the reality of the physical world or the established habits and rules of a particular society. Negativity qua distance has in Patočka an absolute character. It is this claim that he defends in his critique of Bergson. The article attempts to reconstruct Patočka’s position. I claim that the wager on absolute negativity does not make Patočka a nihilist, but a philosopher of a negative holism, and, in a sense, even a moralist. Above a reconstruction of Patočka’s stance, I spell out some reservations focused especially on the systematic meaning of Patočka’s recourse to negativity. I suggest that negation is an indispensable part of a more complex existential structure Patočka is aiming at. The terms he uses for this structure include “thirst for the absolute,” “thirst for reality,” “restlessness of the heart” and “desire.” To translate these allusions onto a general plan, it is useful to talk about the capacity to establish differences that matter. As general as it seems, this turn of phrase can grasp both Patočka’s emphasis on negativity, and his emphasis on the absolute, the latter – nevertheless – not residing in a distance from being, but in differences established, maintained and abandoned by ourselves within being
