Framing the Global Pact for the Environment: Why It\u27s Needed, What It Does, and How It Does It

We face a critical environmental crisis. Humanity consumes unsustainably; we use resources at a rate fifty percent faster than they are reproduced by the planet. The population is growing exponentially and climate change, the most important challenge of this century, is already wreaking havoc around the world. Despite numerous existing international environmental treaties, the Earth, and, therefore, human safety and prosperity, is in peril. According to a recent study by scientists from Stanford University and the National Autonomous University of Mexico, the ongoing “sixth mass extinction” threatens to cause an “assault on the foundations of human civilization.” In November 2017, a report signed by more than 15,000 scientists from 184 countries warned that without a drastic change, we risk catastrophic disruption to Earth systems that enable life on this planet. According to the 2018 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change special report, states have already begun to take the kinds of actions needed to avoid some of those catastrophic events, but those efforts need to be rapidly accelerated and scaled

Mujeres mayores en el cine de Almodóvar

La frecuencia, y variedad, de personajes femeninos en el cine de Pedro Almodóvar ha dado lugar a múltiples, y en ocasiones encontradas, interpretaciones. No podía ser de otra manera si tenemos en cuenta que sus mujeres suelen ser extravagantes, excesivas y de todo tipo de condición social y sexual. Entre esa pluralidad hay también espacio para las mujeres mayores, pero nunca protagonistas principales. Estas suelen ser mujeres que proceden en su mayoría del mundo rural, lo que las hace estar desubicadas en la ciudad. Otra de sus características es que son madres o abuelas. Finalmente, destaca también la ausencia de enamoramiento o sexualidad manifiesta. Esta propuesta analiza todos los personajes femeninos mayores y establece las principales características del mundo almodovariano en torno al tipo de papel que representan, cómo se muestra el envejecimiento, cuál es su origen y posición social y cómo se manifiesta su sexualidad.Universidad de Málaga. Informational Mismatches: A Neglected Threat of Climate Change to Interspecific Interactions

Interspecific interactions are deeply affected by the current scenario of climate change. This is because interactions are sensitive to many traits of interacting species as phenology, distribution, behavior, and relative abundances which may be differently influenced by climate change in each species. In this scenario, positive interactions, which require temporal coordination of events of life history of interacting species, could be particularly altered due to differential effects of climate change on phenology, apart from by the effects on abundance and distribution. Hitherto, studies focusing on the effects of climate change on positive biotic interactions are scarce and mainly focused on plant-pollinator interactions. Here I propose that, by inducing informational mismatches, climate change may lead to individuals from competing species relying on heterospecific social information to making mis- or un-informed decisions. The idea is that competing species are valuable sources of social information to each other provided overlap of their activities occurs. However, whenever coordination of events fails, competing species will co-occur at the wrong moment, co-occur only in small numbers or even not co-occur at all and thus they will not be able to access useful or any social information from heterospecifics. In that scenario, interacting species would be mis- or un- informed, and, consequently, decision taking will be impaired, leading to disequilibrium in the community. Automated generation of computationally hard feature models using evolutionary algorithms

The automated extraction of information from feature models is a thriving topic involving numerous analysis operations, techniques and tools. Performance evaluations in this domain mainly rely on the use of random feature models. However, these only provide a rough idea of the behaviour of the tools with average problems and are not sufficient to reveal their real strengths and weaknesses. In this article, we propose to model the problem of finding computationally hard feature models as an optimization problem and we solve it using a novel evolutionary algorithm for optimized feature models (ETHOM). Given a tool and an analysis operation, ETHOM generates input models of a predefined size maximizing aspects such as the execution time or the memory consumption of the tool when performing the operation over the model. This allows users and developers to know the performance of tools in pessimistic cases providing a better idea of their real power and revealing performance bugs. Experiments using ETHOM on a number of analyses and tools have successfully identified models producing much longer executions times and higher memory consumption than those obtained with random models of identical or even larger size.European Commission (FEDER), the Spanish Government and the Andalusian Government

Aquí es descriuen dues observacions de martinets alimentant-se d'ocells morts en una colònia de l'oest de Badajoz. El fet que no existeixin descripcions prèvies de l'ús d'aquest tipus de menjar per part dels martinets probablement és perquè la metodologia emprada tradicionalment per a l'estudi de la dieta d'aquesta espècie es basa en la recollida de restes de menjar com egagròpiles o regurgitacions, utilitzant molt poc l'observació directa

Reflections about cinema and social photography in City of Gold

El film de Fernando Meirelles, Ciudad de Dios, realiza un planteamiento basado en hechos reales en el que todos los habitantes de una favela comparten los mismos códigos. Agresividad, violencia, muerte, dinero fácil, venganza y ser el líder, entre otros, son los denominadores comunes. A partir de aquí se puede constatar, desde un punto de vista funcionalista, que en el desarrollo de la película la correlación entre las respuestas de los miembros de esta comunidad y el legado social que reciben es coherente. Pero el objeto de estudio de este texto se centrará en la figura de uno de sus integrantes, Buscapé, que mediante la fotografía consigue romper el círculo y escapar a un destino similar al de sus colegas. La fotografía y las relaciones que se establecen con los diversos miembros de esta comunidad a través de ella, conformarán este análisis donde las teorías de Phillipe Dubois a cerca de la fotografía en el cine nos servirán como fundamento para descubrir qué funciones desempeña este soporte para lograr definir la figura del fotógrafo y su obra.Fernando Meirelles’ film “City of God” is based on real events, and on a real community which shares the codes of aggressiveness, violence, death, easy money, revenge and leadership. Estrategias de género para la integración a través del reagrupamiento familiar

La reagrupación familiar, como indicador de integración de las familias inmigrantes en las sociedades de acogida, favorece el acceso en igualdad a los bienes, a los derechos y a los recursos de las comunidades. Así pues, las mujeres inmigrantes mediante la convivencia en familia logran más fácilmente acceder a aquellos ámbitos de la protección social que los estados del bienestar dispensan a través de prestaciones, permisos, beneficios, excedencias, ayudas y becas. Los sistemas públicos de protección social, sin embargo, no protege todas las formas de ser familia. Asimismo, se detectan desigualdades asociadas al género que perjudican especialmente a las mujeres inmigrantes debido a los puestos de trabajo que ocupan, a las responsabilidades en el ámbito privado, a la invisibilidad en los espacios públicos y a las trabas personales, sociales y administrativas impuestas desde los países de origen y en los países de acogida. Frente a lo anterior, el estudio empírico desarrollado en la Comunidad Autónoma de Andalucía muestra como las mujeres inmigrantes desarrollan estrategias familiares con la pretensión de hacer efectivos los reagrupamientos familiares y salvar así las problemáticas relacionadas con la nacionalidad, la clase social y los modos de organización familiar.Family reunification as an indicator of immigrant integration promotes equal access to properties, rights and resources of communities. Thus, through coexistence, immigrant women get access to certain areas of social protection easier than welfare states such as employment entitlements, legal stay, benefits, career breaks, scholarships and grants. Public Social Protection Systems, however, does not protect all forms of being family. Regional inequalities associated with gender are detected, that hurt immigrant women and are related to their jobs, responsibilities in the private sphere, invisibility in public spaces and personal, social and administrative obstacles which are imposed from their origin countries to the host country. Empirical research conducted in Andalusia shows family strategies developed by women for effective grouping processes and get over frequently problems associated with different nationalities, social classes and diverse ways of being family
