Cosmological viability of f(R)-gravity as an ideal fluid and its compatibility with a matter dominated phase
We show that f(R)-gravity can, in general, give rise to cosmological viable
models compatible with a matter-dominated epoch evolving into a late
accelerated phase. We discuss the various representations of f(R)-gravity as an
ideal fluid or a scalar-tensor gravity theory, taking into account conformal
transformations. We point out that mathematical equivalence does not
correspond, in several cases, to the physical equivalence of Jordan frame and
Einstein frame. Finally, we show that wide classes of f(R)-gravity models,
including matter and accelerated phases, can be phenomenologically
reconstructed by means of observational data. In principle, any popular
quintessence models could be "reframed" as an f(R)-gravity model.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figur
On the true nature of renormalizability in Horava-Lifshitz gravity
We argue that the true nature of the renormalizability of Horava-Lifshitz
gravity lies in the presence of higher order spatial derivatives and not in the
anisotropic Lifshitz scaling of space and time. We discuss the possibility of
constructing a higher order spatial derivatives model that has the same
renormalization properties of Horava-Lifshitz gravity but that does not make
use of the Lifshitz scaling. In addition, the state-of-the-art of the Lorentz
symmetry restoration in Horava-Lifshitz-type theories of gravitation is
reviewed.Comment: Latex file in Revtex style, 5 pages, no figures. v2: references

Bcl-2âModifying Factor Induces Renal Proximal Tubular Cell Apoptosis in Diabetic Mice
This study investigated the mechanisms underlying tubular apoptosis in diabetes by identifying proapoptotic genes that are differentially upregulated by reactive oxygen species in renal proximal tubular cells (RPTCs) in models of diabetes. Total RNAs isolated from renal proximal tubules (RPTs) of 20-week-old heterozygous db/m+, db/db, and db/db catalase (CAT)-transgenic (Tg) mice were used for DNA chip microarray analysis. Real-time quantitative PCR assays, immunohistochemistry, and mice rendered diabetic with streptozotocin were used to validate the proapoptotic gene expression in RPTs. Cultured rat RPTCs were used to confirm the apoptotic activity and regulation of proapoptotic gene expression. Additionally, studies in kidney tissues from patients with and without diabetes were used to confirm enhanced proapoptotic gene expression in RPTs. Bcl-2âmodifying factor (Bmf) was differentially upregulated (P < 0.01) in RPTs of db/db mice compared with db/m+ and db/db CAT-Tg mice and in RPTs of streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice in which insulin reversed this finding. In vitro, Bmf cDNA overexpression in rat RPTCs coimmunoprecipated with Bcl-2, enhanced caspase-3 activity, and promoted apoptosis. High glucose (25 mmol/L) induced Bmf mRNA expression in RPTCs, whereas rotenone, catalase, diphenylene iodinium, and apocynin decreased it. Knockdown of Bmf with small interfering RNA reduced high glucoseâinduced apoptosis in RPTCs. More important, enhanced Bmf expression was detected in RPTs of kidneys from patients with diabetes. These data demonstrate differential upregulation of Bmf in diabetic RPTs and suggest a potential role for Bmf in regulating RPTC apoptosis and tubular atrophy in diabetes
Statefinder diagnostic and stability of modified gravity consistent with holographic and new agegraphic dark energy
Recently one of us derived the action of modified gravity consistent with the
holographic and new-agegraphic dark energy. In this paper, we investigate the
stability of the Lagrangians of the modified gravity as discussed in [M. R.
Setare, Int. J. Mod. Phys. D 17 (2008) 2219; M. R. Setare, Astrophys. Space
Sci. 326 (2010) 27]. We also calculate the statefinder parameters which
classify our dark energy model.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, accepted by Gen. Relativ. Gravi
Field Measurements of Terrestrial and Martian Dust Devils
Surface-based measurements of terrestrial and martian dust devils/convective vortices provided from mobile and stationary platforms are discussed. Imaging of terrestrial dust devils has quantified their rotational and vertical wind speeds, translation speeds, dimensions, dust load, and frequency of occurrence. Imaging of martian dust devils has provided translation speeds and constraints on dimensions, but only limited constraints on vertical motion within a vortex. The longer mission durations on Mars afforded by long operating robotic landers and rovers have provided statistical quantification of vortex occurrence (time-of-sol, and recently seasonal) that has until recently not been a primary outcome of more temporally limited terrestrial dust devil measurement campaigns. Terrestrial measurement campaigns have included a more extensive range of measured vortex parameters (pressure, wind, morphology, etc.) than have martian opportunities, with electric field and direct measure of dust abundance not yet obtained on Mars. No martian robotic mission has yet provided contemporaneous high frequency wind and pressure measurements. Comparison of measured terrestrial and martian dust devil characteristics suggests that martian dust devils are larger and possess faster maximum rotational wind speeds, that the absolute magnitude of the pressure deficit within a terrestrial dust devil is an order of magnitude greater than a martian dust devil, and that the time-of-day variation in vortex frequency is similar. Recent terrestrial investigations have demonstrated the presence of diagnostic dust devil signals within seismic and infrasound measurements; an upcoming Mars robotic mission will obtain similar measurement types
Cosmological evolution and statefinder diagnostic for new holographic dark energy model in non flat universe
In this paper, the holographic dark energy model with new infrared cut-off
proposed by Granda and Oliveros has been investigated in spatially non flat
universe. The dependency of the evolution of equation of state, deceleration
parameter and cosmological evolution of Hubble parameter on the parameters of
new HDE model are calculated. Also, the statefinder parameters and in
this model are derived and the evolutionary trajectories in plane are
plotted. We show that the evolutionary trajectories are dependent on the model
parameters of new HDE model. Eventually, in the light of SNe+BAO+OHD+CMB
observational data, we plot the evolutionary trajectories in and
planes for best fit values of the parameters of new HDE model.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, Accepted by Astrophys. Space Sc

broad resonance with mass MeV, width MeV. A broad resonance peaking at 2020 MeV is also required

Turbulence induced additional deceleration in relativistic shock wave propagation: implications for gamma-ray burst
The late afterglow of gamma-ray burst is believed to be due to progressive
deceleration of the forward shock wave driven by the gamma-ray burst ejecta
propagating in the interstellar medium. We study the dynamic effect of
interstellar turbulence on shock wave propagation. It is shown that the shock
wave decelerates more quickly than previously assumed without the turbulence.
As an observational consequence, an earlier jet break will appear in the light
curve of the forward shock wave. The scatter of the jet-corrected energy
release for gamma-ray burst, inferred from the jet-break, may be partly due to
the physical uncertainties in the turbulence/shock wave interaction. This
uncertainties also exist in two shell collisions in the well-known internal
shock model proposed for gamma-ray burst prompt emission. The large scatters of
known luminosity relations of gamma-ray burst may be intrinsic and thus
gamma-ray burst is not a good standard candle. We also discuss the other
implications.Comment: accepted for publication in Astrophysics and Space Scienc
Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment
This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and
W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with
the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and
the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto
the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions
f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV
and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw
> 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour,
are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017
+/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second
include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables,
