Measurements of methane and nitrous oxide in human breath and the development of UK scale emissions
Exhaled human breath can contain small, elevated concentrations of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), both of which contribute to global warming. These emissions from humans are not well understood and are rarely quantified in global greenhouse gas inventories. This study investigated emissions of CH4 and N2O in human breath from 104 volunteers in the UK population, to better understand what drives these emissions and to quantify national-scale estimates. A total of 328 breath samples were collected, and age, sex, dietary preference, and smoking habits were recorded for every participant. The percentage of methane producers (MPs) identified in this study was 31%. The percentage of MPs was higher in older age groups with 25% of people under the age of 30 classified as MPs compared to 40% in the 30+ age group. Females (38%) were more likely to be MPs than males (25%), though overall concentrations emitted from both MP groups were similar. All participants were found to emit N2O in breath, though none of the factors investigated explained the differences in emissions. Dietary preference was not found to affect CH4 or N2O emissions from breath in this study. We estimate a total emission of 1.04 (0.86–1.40) Gg of CH4 and 0.069 (0.066–0.072) Gg of N2O in human breath annually in the UK, the equivalent of 53.9 (47.8–60.0) Gg of CO2. In terms of magnitude, these values are approximately 0.05% and 0.1% of the total emissions of CH4 and N2O reported in the UK national greenhouse gas inventories
Dark-field transmission electron microscopy and the Debye-Waller factor of graphene
Graphene's structure bears on both the material's electronic properties and
fundamental questions about long range order in two-dimensional crystals. We
present an analytic calculation of selected area electron diffraction from
multi-layer graphene and compare it with data from samples prepared by chemical
vapor deposition and mechanical exfoliation. A single layer scatters only 0.5%
of the incident electrons, so this kinematical calculation can be considered
reliable for five or fewer layers. Dark-field transmission electron micrographs
of multi-layer graphene illustrate how knowledge of the diffraction peak
intensities can be applied for rapid mapping of thickness, stacking, and grain
boundaries. The diffraction peak intensities also depend on the mean-square
displacement of atoms from their ideal lattice locations, which is
parameterized by a Debye-Waller factor. We measure the Debye-Waller factor of a
suspended monolayer of exfoliated graphene and find a result consistent with an
estimate based on the Debye model. For laboratory-scale graphene samples,
finite size effects are sufficient to stabilize the graphene lattice against
melting, indicating that ripples in the third dimension are not necessary.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

Topological fault-tolerance in cluster state quantum computation
We describe a fault-tolerant version of the one-way quantum computer using a
cluster state in three spatial dimensions. Topologically protected quantum
gates are realized by choosing appropriate boundary conditions on the cluster.
We provide equivalence transformations for these boundary conditions that can
be used to simplify fault-tolerant circuits and to derive circuit identities in
a topological manner. The spatial dimensionality of the scheme can be reduced
to two by converting one spatial axis of the cluster into time. The error
threshold is 0.75% for each source in an error model with preparation, gate,
storage and measurement errors. The operational overhead is poly-logarithmic in

Experimental and Numerical Studies of Ferritic Stainless Steel Tubular Cross Sections under Combined Compression and Bending
Dynamical Systems approach to Saffman-Taylor fingering. A Dynamical Solvability Scenario
A dynamical systems approach to competition of Saffman-Taylor fingers in a
channel is developed. This is based on the global study of the phase space
structure of the low-dimensional ODE's defined by the classes of exact
solutions of the problem without surface tension. Some simple examples are
studied in detail, and general proofs concerning properties of fixed points and
existence of finite-time singularities for broad classes of solutions are
given. The existence of a continuum of multifinger fixed points and its
dynamical implications are discussed. The main conclusion is that exact
zero-surface tension solutions taken in a global sense as families of
trajectories in phase space spanning a sufficiently large set of initial
conditions, are unphysical because the multifinger fixed points are
nonhyperbolic, and an unfolding of them does not exist within the same class of
solutions. Hyperbolicity (saddle-point structure) of the multifinger fixed
points is argued to be essential to the physically correct qualitative
description of finger competition. The restoring of hyperbolicity by surface
tension is discussed as the key point for a generic Dynamical Solvability
Scenario which is proposed for a general context of interfacial pattern

Search for Point Sources of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays Above 40 EeV Using a Maximum Likelihood Ratio Test
We present the results of a search for cosmic ray point sources at energies
above 40 EeV in the combined data sets recorded by the AGASA and HiRes stereo
experiments. The analysis is based on a maximum likelihood ratio test using the
probability density function for each event rather than requiring an a priori
choice of a fixed angular bin size. No statistically significant clustering of

From early markers to neuro-developmental mechanisms of autism
A fast growing field, the study of infants at risk because of having an older sibling with autism (i.e. infant sibs) aims to identify the earliest signs of this disorder, which would allow for earlier diagnosis and intervention. More importantly, we argue, these studies offer the opportunity to validate existing neuro-developmental models of autism against experimental evidence. Although autism is mainly seen as a disorder of social interaction and communication, emerging early markers do not exclusively reflect impairments of the “social brain”. Evidence for atypical development of sensory and attentional systems highlight the need to move away from localized deficits to models suggesting brain-wide involvement in autism pathology. We discuss the implications infant sibs findings have for future work into the biology of autism and the development of interventions
Light Gluino Search for Decays Containing pi+pi- or pi0 from a Neutral Hadron Beam at Fermilab
We report on two null searches, one for the spontaneous appearance of
pairs, another for a single , consistent with the decay of
a long-lived neutral particle into hadrons and an unseen neutral particle. For
the lowest level gluon-gluino bound state, known as the , we exclude the
decays and for
the masses of and in the theoretically allowed range. In
the most interesting mass range, , we exclude
lifetimes from seconds to as high as seconds,

A Pilot Study with a Novel Setup for Collaborative Play of the Humanoid Robot KASPAR with children with autism
This article is distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License which permits any use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author(s) and the source are credited.This article describes a pilot study in which a novel experimental setup, involving an autonomous humanoid robot, KASPAR, participating in a collaborative, dyadic video game, was implemented and tested with children with autism, all of whom had impairments in playing socially and communicating with others. The children alternated between playing the collaborative video game with a neurotypical adult and playing the same game with the humanoid robot, being exposed to each condition twice. The equipment and experimental setup were designed to observe whether the children would engage in more collaborative behaviours while playing the video game and interacting with the adult than performing the same activities with the humanoid robot. The article describes the development of the experimental setup and its first evaluation in a small-scale exploratory pilot study. The purpose of the study was to gain experience with the operational limits of the robot as well as the dyadic video game, to determine what changes should be made to the systems, and to gain experience with analyzing the data from this study in order to conduct a more extensive evaluation in the future. Based on our observations of the childrens’ experiences in playing the cooperative game, we determined that while the children enjoyed both playing the game and interacting with the robot, the game should be made simpler to play as well as more explicitly collaborative in its mechanics. Also, the robot should be more explicit in its speech as well as more structured in its interactions. Results show that the children found the activity to be more entertaining, appeared more engaged in playing, and displayed better collaborative behaviours with their partners (For the purposes of this article, ‘partner’ refers to the human/robotic agent which interacts with the children with autism. We are not using the term’s other meanings that refer to specific relationships or emotional involvement between two individuals.) in the second sessions of playing with human adults than during their first sessions. One way of explaining these findings is that the children’s intermediary play session with the humanoid robot impacted their subsequent play session with the human adult. However, another longer and more thorough study would have to be conducted in order to better re-interpret these findings. Furthermore, although the children with autism were more interested in and entertained by the robotic partner, the children showed more examples of collaborative play and cooperation while playing with the human adult.Peer reviewe
