One of the features of Balcan endemic nephropathy (BEN) is higher frequency of urothelium malignant tumors, primarily of pyelon (Mtp) and urether (Mtu). Jablanica region is known for the presence of endemic, hypoendemic and non-endemic areas with BEN. The aim of our research was to analyze the appearance of MTUi n endemic settlements of Jablanica region with BEN and to see what the relation of tumor frequency between endemic and non-endemic settlements is. The appearance of MTU was analyzed on the basis of operative protocol data of Urology department, The Health Center in Leskovac and Urology Clinic of The Clinical Center in Nis for the period from 1978 to 2002. We collected data about our patiens regarding their sex, age, the place of living and the place of birth. In order to make classification of settlements we used data of the Institute for Nephrology and hemodialysis (INH) in Nis. Data on total number of population living in these settlements were obtained from the official registration data published in 1981 and 1991. The incidence rate was calculated in the sample of 100,000 people. The average annual incidence rate (AAIR) of MTU in endemic settlements for the considered period is 37.82 (tumors of urether and pyelon - 17.56; malignant tumors of urinary bladder (MTUB 20.26); in hypoendemic settlements the rate is 13.28 (MTp and Mtu - 5.06; MTUB - 8.22); and in non-endemic urban settlements it is 7.35 (Mtu and MTp - 1.04, MTUB - 6.31).AAIR of MTU in endemic areas is 2.85 times higher when compared to hypoendemic areas; it is 6.75 times higher than in non-endemic urban areas, and 5.15 times higher than the rate of non-endemic rural areas. Mtu and MTp are 18.68 times more frequent in endemic settlements than in non-endemic urban areas and 3.47 times more frequent when compared to hypoendemic settlements. The linear trend of the diseased from MTp and MTu in endemic areas of Jablanica region for 25-year period was slowly decreasing according to statistics (y= -0.0054x + 0.59; r2=0.0031.High frequency of Mtu, primarily of Mtu and MTp in areas with BEN, probably points to the common nephropathogenic and cancerogenic etiologic factor, confirming thus the existence of positive correlation between BEN and malignant tumors of upper urothelium (MTUU)

Binding mechanism of the model charged dye carboxyfluorescein to hyaluronan/polylysine multilayers

Biopolymer-based multilayers become more and more attractive due to the vast span of biological application they can be used for, e.g., implant coatings, cell culture supports, scaffolds. Multilayers have demonstrated superior capability to store enormous amounts of small charged molecules, such as drugs, and release them in a controlled manner; however, the binding mechanism for drug loading into the multilayers is still poorly understood. Here we focus on this mechanism using model hyaluronan/polylysine (HA/PLL) multilayers and a model charged dye, carboxyfluorescein (CF). We found that CF reaches a concentration of 13 mM in the multilayers that by far exceeds its solubility in water. The high loading is not related to the aggregation of CF in the multilayers. In the multilayers, CF molecules bind to free amino groups of PLL; however, intermolecular CF–CF interactions also play a role and (i) endow the binding with a cooperative nature and (ii) result in polyadsorption of CF molecules, as proven by fitting of the adsorption isotherm using the BET model. Analysis of CF mobility in the multilayers by fluorescence recovery after photobleaching has revealed that CF diffusion in the multilayers is likely a result of both jumping of CF molecules from one amino group to another and movement, together with a PLL chain being bound to it. We believe that this study may help in the design of tailor-made multilayers that act as advanced drug delivery platfor

A “cell-friendly” window for the interaction of cells with hyaluronic acid/poly-L-lysine multilayers

Polyelectrolyte multilayers assembled from hyaluronic acid (HA) and poly-L-lysine (PLL) are most widely studied showing excellent reservoir characteristics to host molecules of diverse nature; however, thick (HA/PLL)n films were often found cell-repellent. By a systematic study of the adhesion and proliferation of various cells as a function of bilayer number ‘n’ a correlation with the mechanical and chemical properties of films is developed. The following cell lines have been studied: mouse 3T3 and L929 fibroblasts, human foreskin primary fibroblasts VH-Fib, human embryonic kidney HEK-293, human bone cell line U-2-OS, Chinese hamster ovary CHO-K and mouse embryonic stem cells. All cells adhere and spread well in a narrow ‘cell-friendly’ window, identified in the range of n=12-15. At n15, the film is cell-repellent for all cell lines. Cellular adhesion correlates with the mechanical properties of the films showing that softer films at higher ‘n’ number exhibiting a significant decrease of the Young’s modulus below 100 kPa are weakly adherent to cells. This trend cannot be reversed even by coating a strong cell-adhesive protein fibronectin onto the film. This indicates that mechanical cues plays a major role for cell behaviour, also in respect to biochemical ones

Characterisation of general proteolytic, milk clotting and antifungal activity of Ficus carica latex during fruit ripening

The physiological role of fig latex is to protect the plant from pathogens. Latex is a rich source of proteases, predominantly ficin. Fig latex also contains collagenolytic protease and chitinolytic enzymes. Our aim was to investigate changes in protein composition, enzyme and antifungal activities of fig latex during fruit ripening. RESULTSComparison of latex samples in different time periods showed a uniform increase of protein concentration in chronological order. The content of collagenolytic protease did not differ significantly in the latex samples, while the content of ficin decreased. Ficin-specific activity towards casein was the highest at the beginning of fruit development (about 80 U mg(-1)). Specific milk clotting activity increased as well as the abundance of casein band in the clots. Specific chitinolytic activity at the beginning of flowering was 6.5 times higher than the activity in the period when fruits are ripe. Antifungal activity is the most extensive in spring. CONCLUSIONFicin forms with different casein specificities are present in different proportions during fruit ripening, which is of importance for applications in the dairy industry. The protection mechanism against insects and fungi, which relies on chitinolytic activity, is the most important in the early phases of flowering and is replaced with other strategies over time. Hierarchy of hybrid materials — the place of inorganics-in-organics in it, their composition and applications

    Get PDF
Hybrid materials, or hybrids incorporating both organic and inorganic constituents, are emerging as a very potent and promising class of materials due to the diverse, but complementary nature of the properties inherent of these different classes of materials. The complementarity leads to a perfect synergy of properties of desired material and eventually an end-product. The diversity of resultant properties and materials used in the construction of hybrids, leads to a very broad range of application areas generated by engaging very different research communities. We provide here a general classification of hybrid materials, wherein organics–in-inorganics (inorganic materials modified by organic moieties) are distinguished from inorganics–in–organics (organic materials or matrices modified by inorganic constituents). In the former area, the surface functionalization of colloids is distinguished as a stand-alone sub-area. The latter area—functionalization of organic materials by inorganic additives—is the focus of the current review. Inorganic constituents, often in the form of small particles or structures, are made of minerals, clays, semiconductors, metals, carbons, and ceramics. They are shown to be incorporated into organic matrices, which can be distinguished as two classes: chemical and biological. Chemical organic matrices include coatings, vehicles and capsules assembled into: hydrogels, layer-by-layer assembly, polymer brushes, block co-polymers and other assemblies. Biological organic matrices encompass bio-molecules (lipids, polysaccharides, proteins and enzymes, and nucleic acids) as well as higher level organisms: cells, bacteria, and microorganisms. In addition to providing details of the above classification and analysis of the composition of hybrids, we also highlight some antagonistic yin-&-yang properties of organic and inorganic materials, review applications and provide an outlook to emerging trends

The Transition of the economic and overall environment and restructuring of the enterprises are recurrent processes. The transition of the environment means establishing the market economy which may exists only if the enterprise’s ownership is defined and if it is financially stable and well structured. The restructuring is needed because even the enterprises in difficult situation may be recovered in a way to a certain degree

Question Above All Questions for Serbia in 2016 is the Reform of the State-Owned Enterprises

No matter how much we try, not everything depends on us, because we are part of the world - the global economy. But just because of that, we have to be clear about this, what is our real core problem: whether the state as “too big consumer”, as “soft as income,” or something else. In our country today is more than a debate on the consolidation of the measures of growth and development, which is also rational to ask a question the presence of Serbian strategy, or whether the research and the experience of others in this area. It is generally known that the market economy is an indispensable element of any well-ordered society, and Serbia at this point did little steps to get closer to such an economy than it was at the end of the previous government. The only thing that has been done is that it was started - not complete - financial consolidation, which is a necessary, because it is inevitable. However, fiscal consolidation is not reform, because it does not represent the transformation of the economy and society. In the center of each of the market economy and well-ordered society must be an individual, and an individual who cares about itself and shall bear all the consequences of their decisions, and thus the responsibility for them. For such a society apply firm rules of the game which is not carried out, and within each of them take care of themselves and their environment. The choice we are facing today in the Serbian society is a choice between establishing a full market economy and promoting various forms of pluralism in property relation
