Remarks on the Rayleigh-Benard Convection on Spherical Shells
The main objective of this article is to study the effect of spherical
geometry on dynamic transitions and pattern formation for the Rayleigh-Benard
convection. The study is mainly motivated by the importance of spherical
geometry and convection in geophysical flows. It is shown in particular that
the system always undergoes a continuous (Type-I) transition to a
-dimensional sphere , where lc is the critical wave length
corresponding to the critical Rayleigh number. Furthermore, it has shown in
[12] that it is critical to add nonisotropic turbulent friction terms in the
momentum equation to capture the large-scale atmospheric and oceanic
circulation patterns. We show in particular that the system with turbulent
friction terms added undergoes the same type of dynamic transition, and obtain
an explicit formula linking the critical wave number (pattern selection), the
aspect ratio, and the ratio between the horizontal and vertical turbulent
friction coefficients
F-spin as a Partial Symmetry
We use the empirical evidence that F-spin multiplets exist in nuclei for only
selected states as an indication that F-spin can be regarded as a partial
symmetry. We show that there is a class of non-F-scalar IBM-2 Hamiltonians with
partial F-spin symmetry, which reproduce the known systematics of collective
bands in nuclei. These Hamiltonians predict that the scissors states have good
F-spin and form F-spin multiplets, which is supported by the existing data.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figur
Large time wellposdness to the 3-D Capillary-Gravity Waves in the long wave regime
In the regime of weakly transverse long waves, given long-wave initial data,
we prove that the nondimensionalized water wave system in an infinite strip
under influence of gravity and surface tension on the upper free interface has
a unique solution on [0,{T}/\eps] for some \eps independent of constant
We shall prove in the subsequent paper \cite{MZZ2} that on the same time
interval, these solutions can be accurately approximated by sums of solutions
of two decoupled Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equations.Comment: Split the original paper(The long wave approximation to the 3-D

Metropolis simulations of Met-Enkephalin with solvent-accessible area parameterizations
We investigate the solvent-accessible area method by means of Metropolis
simulations of the brain peptide Met-Enkephalin at 300. For the energy
function ECEPP/2 nine atomic solvation parameter (ASP) sets are studied. The
simulations are compared with one another, with simulations with a distance
dependent electrostatic permittivity , and with vacuum
simulations (). Parallel tempering and the biased Metropolis
techniques RM are employed and their performance is evaluated. The measured
observables include energy and dihedral probability densities (pds), integrated
autocorrelation times, and acceptance rates. Two of the ASP sets turn out to be
unsuitable for these simulations. For all other systems selected configurations
are minimized in search of the global energy minima, which are found for the
vacuum and the system, but for none of the ASP models. Other
observables show a remarkable dependence on the ASPs. In particular, we find
three ASP sets for which the autocorrelations at 300K are considerably
smaller than for vacuum simulations.Comment: 10 pages and 8 figure
Scheme for the implementation of a universal quantum cloning machine via cavity-assisted atomic collisions in cavity QED
We propose a scheme to implement the universal quantum cloning
machine of Buzek et.al [Phys. Rev.A 54, 1844(1996)] in the context of cavity
QED. The scheme requires cavity-assisted collision processes between atoms,
which cross through nonresonant cavity fields in the vacuum states. The cavity
fields are only virtually excited to face the decoherence problem. That's why
the requirements on the cavity quality factor can be loosened.Comment: to appear in PR
A Systematic Study on Energy Dependence of Quasi-Periodic Oscillation Frequency in GRS 1915+105
Systematically studying all the RXTE/PCA observations for GRS 1915+105 before
November 2010, we have discovered three additional patterns in the relation
between Quasi-Periodic Oscillation (QPO) frequency and photon energy, extending
earlier outcomes reported by Qu et al. (2010). We have confirmed that as QPO
frequency increases, the relation evolves from the negative correlation to
positive one. The newly discovered patterns provide new constraints on the QPO
models
Partial Dynamical Symmetry in the Symplectic Shell Model
We present an example of a partial dynamical symmetry (PDS) in an interacting
fermion system and demonstrate the close relationship of the associated
Hamiltonians with a realistic quadrupole-quadrupole interaction, thus shedding
new light on this important interaction. Specifically, in the framework of the
symplectic shell model of nuclei, we prove the existence of a family of
fermionic Hamiltonians with partial SU(3) symmetry. We outline the construction
process for the PDS eigenstates with good symmetry and give analytic
expressions for the energies of these states and E2 transition strengths
between them. Characteristics of both pure and mixed-symmetry PDS eigenstates
are discussed and the resulting spectra and transition strengths are compared
to those of real nuclei. The PDS concept is shown to be relevant to the
description of prolate, oblate, as well as triaxially deformed nuclei.
Similarities and differences between the fermion case and the previously
established partial SU(3) symmetry in the Interacting Boson Model are
considered.Comment: 9 figure
Stokes-operator-squeezed continuous-variable polarization states
We investigate nonclassical Stokes-operator variances in continuous-wave polarization-squeezed laser light generated from one and two optical parametric amplifiers. A general expression of how Stokes-operator variances decompose into two-mode quadrature operator variances is given. Stokes parameter variance spectra for four different polarization-squeezed states have been measured and compared with a coherent state. Our measurement results are visualized by three-dimensional Stokes-operator noise volumes mapped on the quantum Poincare sphere. We quantitatively compare the channel capacity of the different continuous-variable polarization states for communication protocols. It is shown that squeezed polarization states provide 33% higher channel capacities than the optimum coherent beam protocol
Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment
This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and
W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with
the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and
the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto
the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions
f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV
and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw
> 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour,
are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017
+/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second
include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables,

Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS
The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at
the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS
detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4
fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to
Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks
corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new
structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is
also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes.
This is interpreted as the chi_b(3P) system.Comment: 5 pages plus author list (18 pages total), 2 figures, 1 table,
