The Non-Trivial Effective Potential of the `Trivial' lambda Phi^4 Theory: A Lattice Test
The strong evidence for the `triviality' of (lambda Phi^4)_4 theory is not
incompatible with spontaneous symmetry breaking. Indeed, for a `trivial' theory
the effective potential should be given exactly by the classical potential plus
the free-field zero-point energy of the shifted field; i.e., by the one-loop
effective potential. When this is renormalized in a simple, but nonperturbative
way, one finds, self-consistently, that the shifted field does become
non-interacting in the continuum limit. For a classically scale-invariant (CSI)
lambda Phi^4 theory one finds m_h^2 = 8 pi^2 v^2, predicting a 2.2 TeV Higgs
boson. Here we extend our earlier work in three ways: (i) we discuss the
analogy with the hard-sphere Bose gas; (ii) we extend the analysis from the CSI
case to the general case; and (iii) we propose a test of the predicted shape of
the effective potential that could be tested in a lattice simulation.Comment: 22 pages, LaTeX, DE-FG05-92ER40717-
Photoinduced 3D orientational order in side chain liquid crystalline azopolymers
We apply experimental technique based on the combination of methods dealing
with principal refractive indices and absorption coefficients to study the
photoinduced 3D orientational order in the films of liquid crystalline (LC)
azopolymers. The technique is used to identify 3D orientational configurations
of trans azobenzene chromophores and to characterize the degree of ordering in
terms of order parameters. We study two types of LC azopolymers which form
structures with preferred in-plane and out-of-plane alignment of
azochromophores, correspondingly. Using irradiation with the polarized light of
two different wavelengths we find that the kinetics of photoinduced anisotropy
can be dominated by either photo-reorientation or photoselection mechanisms
depending on the wavelength. We formulate the phenomenological model describing
the kinetics of photoinduced anisotropy in terms of the isomer concentrations
and the order parameter tensor. We present the numerical results for absorption
coefficients that are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data.
The model is also used to interpret the effect of changing the mechanism with
the wavelength of the pumping light.Comment: uses revtex4 28 pages, 10 figure
Stable and Metastable Structures of Cobalt on Cu(001): An ab initio Study
We report results of density-functional theory calculations on the
structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of (1x1)-structures of Co on
Cu(001) for coverages up to two monolayers. In particular we discuss the
tendency towards phase separation in Co islands and the possibility of
segregation of Cu on top of the Co-film. A sandwich structure consisting of a
bilayer Co-film covered by 1ML of Cu is found to be the lowest-energy
configuration. We also discuss a bilayer c(2x2)-alloy which may form due to
kinetic reasons, or be stabilized at strained surface regions. Furthermore, we
study the influence of magnetism on the various structures and, e.g., find that
Co adlayers induce a weak spin-density wave in the copper substrate.Comment: 11 pages including 4 figures. Related publications can be found at

Enteroendocrine K-cells exert complementary effects to control bone quality and mass in mice
International audienceThe involvement of a gut-bone axis in controlling bone physiology has been long suspected, although the exact mechanisms are unclear. We explored whether glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP)-producing enteroendocrine K-cells were involved in this process. The bone phenotype of transgenic mouse models lacking GIP secretion (GIP-GFP-KI) or enteroendocrine K-cells (GIP-DT) was investigated. Mice deficient in GIP secretion exhibited lower bone strength, trabecular bone mass, trabecula number and cortical thickness, notably due to higher bone resorption. Alterations of microstructure, modifications of bone compositional parameters, represented by lower collagen cross-linking were also apparent. None of these alterations were observed in GIP-DT mice lacking enteroendocrine K-cells, suggesting that other K-cell secretory product acts to counteract GIP action. To assess this, stable analogues of the known K-cell peptide hormones, xenin and GIP, were administered to mature NIH Swiss male mice. Both were capable of modulating bone strength mostly by altering bone microstructure, bone gene expression and bone compositional parameters. However, the two molecules exhibited opposite actions on bone physiology, with evidence that xenin effects are mediated indirectly, possibly via neural networks. Our data highlight a previously unknown interaction between GIP and xenin, which both moderate gut-bone connectivity
The Levi Problem On Strongly Pseudoconvex -Bundles
Let be a unimodular Lie group, a compact manifold with boundary, and
the total space of a principal bundle so that is also a
strongly pseudoconvex complex manifold. In this work, we show that if acts
by holomorphic transformations satisfying a local property, then the space of
square-integrable holomorphic functions on is infinite -dimensional.Comment: 19 pages--Corrects earlier version
Grain Surface Models and Data for Astrochemistry
AbstractThe cross-disciplinary field of astrochemistry exists to understand the formation, destruction, and survival of molecules in astrophysical environments. Molecules in space are synthesized via a large variety of gas-phase reactions, and reactions on dust-grain surfaces, where the surface acts as a catalyst. A broad consensus has been reached in the astrochemistry community on how to suitably treat gas-phase processes in models, and also on how to present the necessary reaction data in databases; however, no such consensus has yet been reached for grain-surface processes. A team of ∼25 experts covering observational, laboratory and theoretical (astro)chemistry met in summer of 2014 at the Lorentz Center in Leiden with the aim to provide solutions for this problem and to review the current state-of-the-art of grain surface models, both in terms of technical implementation into models as well as the most up-to-date information available from experiments and chemical computations. This review builds on the results of this workshop and gives an outlook for future directions
Measurement of the top pair production cross section in 8 TeV proton-proton collisions using kinematic information in the lepton plus jets final state with ATLAS
A measurement is presented of the inclusive production
cross-section in collisions at a center-of-mass energy of TeV
using data collected by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider.
The measurement was performed in the lepton+jets final state using a data set
corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb. The cross-section
was obtained using a likelihood discriminant fit and -jet identification was
used to improve the signal-to-background ratio. The inclusive
production cross-section was measured to be
pb assuming a top-quark mass of 172.5 GeV, in good agreement with the
theoretical prediction of pb. The production cross-section in the fiducial region
determined by the detector acceptance is also reported.Comment: Published version, 19 pages plus author list (35 pages total), 3
