Tracing colliding winds in the UV line orbital variability of gamma-ray binaries
Gamma-ray binaries emit most of their radiated power beyond ~10 MeV. The
non-thermal emission is thought to arise from the interaction of the
relativistic wind of a rotation-powered pulsar with the stellar wind of its
massive (O or Be) companion star. A powerful pulsar creates an extended cavity,
filled with relativistic electrons, in the radiatively-driven wind of the
massive star. As a result, the observed P Cyg profiles of UV resonant lines
from the stellar wind should be different from those of single massive stars.
We propose to use UV emission lines to detect and constrain the colliding wind
region in gamma-ray binaries. We compute the expected orbital variability of P
Cyg profiles depending upon the interaction geometry (set by the ratio of
momentum fluxes from the winds) and the line-of-sight to the system. We predict
little or no variability for the case of LS 5039 and PSR B1259-63, in agreement
with currently available HST observations of LS 5039. However, variability
between superior and inferior conjunction is expected in the case of LS I+61

On the evolution of irradiated turbulent clouds: A comparative study between modes of triggered star-formation
Here we examine the evolution of irradiated clouds using the Smoothed
Particle Hydrodynamics ({\small SPH}) algorithm coupled with a ray-tracing
scheme that calculates the position of the ionisation-front at each timestep.
We present results from simulations performed for three choices of {\small
IR}-flux spanning the range of fluxes emitted by a typical {\small B}-type star
to a cluster of {\small OB}-type stars. The extent of photo-ablation, of
course, depends on the strength of the incident flux and a strong flux of
{\small IR} severely ablates a {\small MC}. Consequently, the first
star-formation sites appear in the dense shocked layer along the edges of the
irradiated cloud. Radiation-induced turbulence readily generates dense
filamentary structure within the photo-ablated cloud although several new
star-forming sites also appear in some of the densest regions at the junctions
of these filaments. Prevalent physical conditions within a {\small MC} play a
crucial role in determining the mode, i.e., filamentary as compared to isolated
pockets, of star-formation, the timescale on which stars form and the
distribution of stellar masses. The probability density functions ({\small
PDF}s) derived for irradiated clouds in this study are intriguing due to their
resemblance with those presented in a recent census of irradiated {\small MC}s.
Furthermore, irrespective of the nature of turbulence, the protostellar
mass-functions({\small MF}s) derived in this study follow a power-law
distribution. When turbulence within the cloud is driven by a relatively strong
flux of {\small IR} such as that emitted by a massive {\small O}-type star or a
cluster of such stars, the {\small MF} approaches the canonical form due to
Salpeter, and even turns-over for protostellar masses smaller than 0.2

Can the gamma-ray source 3EG J2033+4118 be produced by the stellar system Cyg OB2 No.5?
We discuss the possibility that the stellar system Cyg OB2 No.5 can be a
gamma-ray source in the light of recent EGRET and radio data. This system is
formed by an O7 Ia + Ofpe/WN9 contact binary. A third star, probably a B0 V
star also associated with the system, is located at AU from the
primary. We estimate the expected gamma-ray luminosity from the colliding winds
region, the terminal shock of the wind, and the unstable zone at the base of
the wind, and conclude that, under very reasonable assumptions, Cyg OB2 No.5
can generate about a half of the gamma-ray flux detected from the positionally
coincident source 3EG J2033+4118. We suggest, then, that other O stars
belonging to the association, also placed within the 95 % probability EGRET
location contour, could contribute to the observed gamma-ray flux.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic
Limiting Accretion onto Massive Stars by Fragmentation-Induced Starvation
Massive stars influence their surroundings through radiation, winds, and
supernova explosions far out of proportion to their small numbers. However, the
physical processes that initiate and govern the birth of massive stars remain
poorly understood. Two widely discussed models are monolithic collapse of
molecular cloud cores and competitive accretion. To learn more about massive
star formation, we perform simulations of the collapse of rotating, massive,
cloud cores including radiative heating by both non-ionizing and ionizing
radiation using the FLASH adaptive mesh refinement code. These simulations show
fragmentation from gravitational instability in the enormously dense accretion
flows required to build up massive stars. Secondary stars form rapidly in these
flows and accrete mass that would have otherwise been consumed by the massive
star in the center, in a process that we term fragmentation-induced starvation.
This explains why massive stars are usually found as members of high-order
stellar systems that themselves belong to large clusters containing stars of
all masses. The radiative heating does not prevent fragmentation, but does lead
to a higher Jeans mass, resulting in fewer and more massive stars than would
form without the heating. This mechanism reproduces the observed relation
between the total stellar mass in the cluster and the mass of the largest star.
It predicts strong clumping and filamentary structure in the center of
collapsing cores, as has recently been observed. We speculate that a similar
mechanism will act during primordial star formation.Comment: extended version, ApJ in pres

Star formation in unbound giant molecular clouds: the origin of OB associations?
We investigate the formation of star clusters in an unbound GMC, where the
supporting kinetic energy is twice as large as the cloud's self-gravity. This
cloud manages to form a series of star clusters and disperse, all within
roughly 2 crossing times (10 Myr), supporting recent claims that star formation
is a rapid process. Simple assumptions about the nature of the star formation
occurring in the clusters allows us to place an estimate for the star formation
efficiency at about 5 to 10 %, consistent with observations. We also propose
that unbound clouds can act as a mechanism for forming OB associations. The
clusters that form in the cloud behave as OB subgroups. These clusters are
naturally expanding from one another due to unbound nature of the flows that
create them. The properties of the cloud we present here are are consistent
with those of classic OB associations.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS. The authors
