    Compound cycle engine for helicopter application

    The Compound Cycle Engine (CCE) is a highly turbocharged, power compounded, ultra-high power density, light-weight diesel engine. The turbomachinery is similar to a moderate pressure ratio, free power turbine engine and the diesel core is high speed and a low compression ratio. This engine is considered a potential candidate for future military light helicopter applications. This executive summary presents cycle thermodynamic (SFC) and engine weight analyses performed to establish general engine operating parameters and configuration. An extensive performance and weight analysis based on a typical two hour helicopter (+30 minute reserve) mission determined final conceptual engine design. With this mission, CCE performance was compared to that of a T-800 class gas turbine engine. The CCE had a 31% lower-fuel consumption and resulted in a 16% reduction in engine plus fuel and fuel tank weight. Design SFC of the CCE is 0.33 lb-HP-HR and installed wet weight is 0.43 lbs/HP. The major technology development areas required for the CCE are identified and briefly discussed

    Stem and progenitor cell involvement in acute lymphoblastic leukemia

    Leukemic stem cells (LSCs) share the capacity of self renewal and extensive proliferation with normal hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), and are therefore obvious targets for therapy. As such, they need to be identified and characterized in order to elucidate what drives them, and what separates them from their normal counterparts. The focus of this thesis is on pre B cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), the most common form of cancer in children. We have investigated 2 distinct subtypes of ALL, characterized by the gene fusions ETV6-RUNX1 (found mainly in pediatric ALL, conferring a favorable prognosis) and BCR-ABL1 (producing two different onco-proteins, designated P190 and P210, both of which are associated with a poor prognosis in both children and adults). We show that ETV6-RUNX1 ALL are propagated by B-cell committed LSCs expressing the lymphoid marker CD19, leaving the normal HSC compartment intact. In BCR-ABL1-positive ALL we show an unexpected difference between the two forms of the fusion protein, such that the LSC in P190 BCR-ABL1 ALL, similar to ETV6-RUNX1 ALL, are B-cell committed progenitors, whereas P210 BCR-ABL1 ALL originates in a multipotent HSC, expressing the same phenotypical markers as the normal HSC, and with a retained, albeit severely reduced, capacity to produce a clonal myeloid progeny. Interestingly, the LSC still displays the B cell commitment marker CD19, as only CD19+ cells propagates the disease in immunocompromised mice. We cannot, however, exclude very rare, and/or very quiscent CD19-ve P210 LSCs. This represents a hitherto unanticipated distinct biological difference between P190 and P210 ALLs, possibly indicating different requirements for eradication. In the second paper we describe a method to prospectively purify a large part of the leukemic cells from bone marrow or peripheral blood from patients with ALL, for relevant comparisons across samples. We compared ALL cells harvested from bone marrow and peripheral blood from the same patient by gene expression profiling, and found a striking similarity between cells from the two locations, indicating that bone marrow derived biological cues necessary for normal pre B cells not seem to segregate ALL cells in a blood and a bone marrow compartment, and that cells thus can be harvested from either compartment for further gene expression analyses. Finally, in the discussion part of the two papers, are preliminary data from follow up studies discussed, where we find indications for the existence of distinct sets of LSCs within the same patient with ALL or chronic myeloid leukemia in lymphoid blast crisis, contrary to the generally held view of a homogeneous LSC population

    Enhancing Racialized Staff Mental Health and Well-Being from an Equity-Focused Lens

    The Des Grands Lac school board is facing an ongoing dearth of qualified teachers that warrants a critical examination in order to underscore the impact of low staffing on staff mental health. Among these factors, the damaging impacts of racism in all its forms on racialized educators’ mental health has remained unexamined and unaddressed. As racism is deeply entrenched within the fabric of educational policies and practices, this discrimination is, too often, normalized. Consequently, owing to the racism, several racialized staff have reported experiences of anxiety, depression, and trauma, leaving them feeling alienated and undervalued. This Organizational Improvement Plan (OIP) sets out a framework to implement an equity-focused mental health initiative that seeks to target support towards racialized staff experiencing discrimination. The OIP change-vision aims to establish allyship as a leadership strategy for school leaders in the Des Grands Lacs (DGL) school board in order to propagate and amplify equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives to combat racial discrimination. The application of critical race theory amplifies racialized staff’s voice to counter dominant discourse and raise awareness for the need for change. Drawing on transformative, servant and Ubuntu leadership styles, this OIP aims to offer solutions to create an inclusive environment where all staff could possibly flourish and safely express their lived experience. Such an inclusive environment requires a major shift in organizational culture and in the mindsets at all levels of leadership. This OIP explores ways to challenge systems of power that maintain discriminatory practices through building strong relationships and allyships

    The Temperance Movement: Feminism, Nativism, Religious Identity, and Race

    Over the course of the nineteenth century, an anti-alcohol movement known as the Temperance movement, supported mainly by Protestant women, grew in America. Despite being unable to vote, many of these women were hugely influential in politics, creating the foundation for the Prohibition movement. The ways in which drunkards were discussed and depicted was often as racialized Irish and Italian Catholics: both European groups were not considered “White” at the time, and many of the men came from Catholic countries, which was viewed as a threat by American Protestants. Depicting non-white people as agents of both violence and uncontrollable sexuality was in many ways an appeal to the American people, who at the time were caught up in Nativist anti-Catholic and anti-Irish/Italian beliefs. Political cartoons during the late nineteenth century give modern-day historians a window into the mind of the American people during the Temperance movement, including but not limited to how they viewed women, race, religion, and the prohibition of alcohol

    "Our combined voices are a chorus: Grief and Survivance in Linda Hogan's Solar Storms"

    While Linda Hogan scholars generally agree that in her literature of environmental justice, grieving the effects of colonised territory and culture can motivate characters to confront oppressive authority figures, scholars have not considered how representations of grief in Hogan’s novels are themselves significant political acts worthy of analysis. In this article, I argue that Hogan’s narrator Angel in her novel Solar Storms shows that grieving is central to Native survivance and environmental justice. In this essay, I utilise a theoretical framework based on the concepts of Native survivance and grievability to suggest how Hogan’s novel uses narrative perspective and imagery to represent the role of grief in transforming victimry to survivance for the intergenerational political community of the novel. In addition, I situate the historical James Bay Project in the context of the environmental justice work of Solar Storms

    Relatedness, National Boarders, Perceptions of Firms and the Value of Their innovations

    The main goal of this dissertation is to better understand how external corporate stakeholder perceptions of relatedness affect important outcomes for companies. In pursuit of this goal, I apply the lens of category studies. Categories not only help audiences to distinguish between members of different categories, they also convey patterns of relatedness. In turn, this may have implications for understanding how audiences search, what they attend to, and how the members are ultimately valued. In the first chapter, I apply incites from social psychology to show how the nationality of audience members affects the way that they cognitively group objects into similar categories. I find that the geographic location of stock market analysts affect the degree to which they will revise their earnings estimates for a given company in the wake of an earnings miss by another firm in the same industry. Foreign analysts revise their earnings estimates downward more so than do local analysts, suggesting that foreign analysts ascribe the earnings miss more broadly and tend to lump companies located in the same country into larger groups than do local analysts. In the second chapter, I demonstrate that the structure of inter-category relationships can have consequential effects for the members of a focal category. Leveraging an experimental-like design, I study the outcomes of nanotechnology patents and the pattern of forward citations across multiple patent jurisdictions. I find that members of technology categories with many close category \u27neighbors\u27 are more broadly cited than members of categories with few category \u27neighbors.’ My findings highlight how category embeddedness and category system structure affect the outcomes of category members as well as the role that classification plays in the valuation of innovation. In the third chapter, I propose a novel and dynamic measure of corporate similarity that is constructed from the two-mode analyst and company coverage network. The approach creates a fine-grained continuous measure of company similarity that can be used as an alternative or supplement to existing static industry classification systems. I demonstrate the value of this new measure in the context of predicting financial market responses to merger and acquisition deals
