New Age Constraints on the Break-Up of Rodinia and Amalgamation of Southwestern Gondwana from the Choquequirao Formation in Southwestern Peru
The Choquequirao Formation is a \u3e3 km-thick amphibolite-grade succession that outcrops in the Central Andes of southern Peru. To constrain its age and tectonostratigraphic setting, detrital zircon and metamorphic zircon, titanite, and rutile UâPb isotopic analyses were conducted. Mantle-derived c. 640 Ma detrital zircons constrain the maximum age of the lower part of the succession and 550â490 Ma metamorphic zircon domains constrain its minimum age. The absence of early Paleozoic detrital zircons suggests that deposition predated early Paleozoic orogenesis in southwestern Gondwana. The close similarity of detrital zircon age spectra to those from sediments deposited on the Arequipa basement suggests that the Choquequirao Formation was deposited on the Arequipa Terrane. Metamorphic titanite dates are highly overdispersed, yet they overlap with c. 460 Ma peak metamorphism recorded by metamorphic zircon. Pb-loss pathways displayed by metamorphic titanite have a lower intercept that overlaps with c. 325 Ma metamorphic rutile, which corresponds to Hercynian orogenesis. A poorly constrained upper intercept of c. 510 Ma may correspond to Pampean and/or early Famatinian orogenesis. We interpret the CryogenianâEdiacaran Choquequirao Formation as having been deposited during the opening of the Palaeo-Iapetus (PuncoviscanaâClymene) Ocean between eastern Arequipa and southern Kalahari prior to the subsequent collision with southwestern Amazonia during the Pampean Orogeny
A newly described strain of Eimeria arloingi (strain A) belongs to the phylogenetic group of ruminant-infecting pathogenic species, which replicate in host endothelial cells in vivo
Coccidiosis caused by Eimeria species is an important disease worldwide, particularly in ruminants and poultry. Eimeria infection can result in significant economic losses due to costs associated with treatment and slower growth rates, or even with mortality of heavily infected individuals. In goat production, a growing industry due to increasing demand for caprine products worldwide, coccidiosis is caused by several Eimeria species with E. arloingi and E. ninakohlyakimovae the most pathogenic. The aims of this study were genetic characterization of a newly isolated European E. arloingi strain (A) and determination of phylogenetic relationships with Eimeria species from other ruminants. Therefore, a DNA sequence of E. arloingi strain (A) containing 2290 consensus nucleotides (the majority of 18S rDNA, complete ITS-1 and 5.8S sequences, and the partial ITS-2) was amplified and phylogenetic relationship determined with the most similar sequences available on GenBank. The phylogenetic tree presented a branch constituted by bovine Eimeria species plus E. arloingi, and another one exclusively populated by ovine Eimeria species. Moreover, E. arloingi, E. bovis and E. zuernii, which all replicate in host intestinal endothelial cells of the lacteals, were found within the same cluster. This study gives new insights into the evolutionary phylogenetic relationships of this newly described caprine Eimeria strain and confirmed its close relationship to other highly pathogenic ruminant Eimeria species characterized by macromeront formation in host endothelial cells of the central lymph capillaries of the small intestine
Occurrence of Eimeria species parasites on small-scale commercial chicken farms in Africa and indication of economic profitability.
Small-scale commercial poultry production is emerging as an important form of livestock production in Africa, providing sources of income and animal protein to many poor households, yet the occurrence and impact of coccidiosis on this relatively new production system remains unknown. The primary objective of this study was to examine Eimeria parasite occurrence on small-scale commercial poultry farms in Ghana, Tanzania and Zambia. Additionally, farm economic viability was measured by calculating the farm gross margin and enterprise budget. Using these economic measures as global assessments of farm productivity, encompassing the diversity present in regional husbandry systems with a measure of fundamental local relevance, we investigated the detection of specific Eimeria species as indicators of farm profitability. Faecal samples and data on production parameters were collected from small-scale (less than 2,000 birds per batch) intensive broiler and layer farms in peri-urban Ghana, Tanzania and Zambia. All seven Eimeria species recognised to infect the chicken were detected in each country. Furthermore, two of the three genetic variants (operational taxonomic units) identified previously in Australia have been described outside of Australia for the first time. Detection of the most pathogenic Eimeria species associated with decreased farm profitability and may be considered as an indicator of likely farm performance. While a causal link remains to be demonstrated, the presence of highly pathogenic enteric parasites may pose a threat to profitable, sustainable small-scale poultry enterprises in Africa
Astrochemistry of Sub-Millimeter Sources in Orion: Studying the Variations of Molecular Tracers with Changing Physical Conditions
Cornerstone molecules (CO, H_2CO, CH_3OH, HCN, HNC, CN, CS, SO) were observed
toward seven sub-millimeter bright sources in the Orion molecular cloud in
order to quantify the range of conditions for which individual molecular line
tracers provide physical and chemical information. Five of the sources observed
were protostellar, ranging in energetics from 1 - 500L_sun, while the other two
sources were located at a shock front and within a photodissociation region
(PDR).
Statistical equilibrium calculations were used to deduce from the measured
line strengths the physical conditions within each source and the abundance of
each molecule. In all cases except the shock and the PDR, the abundance of CO
with respect to H_2 appears significantly below (factor of ten) the general
molecular cloud value of 10^-4. {Formaldehyde measurements were used to
estimate a mean temperature and density for the gas in each source. Evidence
was found for trends between the derived abundance of CO, H_2CO, CH_3OH, and CS
and the energetics of the source, with hotter sources having higher
abundances.} Determining whether this is due to a linear progression of
abundance with temperature or sharp jumps at particular temperatures will
require more detailed modeling. The observed methanol transitions require high
temperatures (T>50 K), and thus energetic sources, within all but one of the
observed protostellar sources. The same conclusion is obtained from
observations of the CS 7-6 transition. Analysis of the HCN and HNC 4-3
transitions provides further support for high densities n> 10^7 cm^-3 in all

Cryptic Eimeria genotypes are common across the southern but not northern hemisphere
The phylum Apicomplexa includes parasites of medical, zoonotic and veterinary significance. Understanding the global distribution and genetic diversity of these protozoa is of fundamental importance for efficient, robust and long-lasting methods of control. Eimeria spp. cause intestinal coccidiosis in all major livestock animals and are the most important parasites of domestic chickens in terms of both economic impact and animal welfare. Despite having significant negative impacts on the efficiency of food production, many fundamental questions relating to the global distribution and genetic variation of Eimeria spp. remain largely unanswered. Here, we provide the broadest map yet of Eimeria occurrence for domestic chickens, confirming that all the known species (Eimeria acervulina, Eimeria brunetti, Eimeria maxima, Eimeria mitis, Eimeria necatrix, Eimeria praecox, Eimeria tenella) are present in all six continents where chickens are found (including 21 countries). Analysis of 248 internal transcribed spacer sequences derived from 17 countries provided evidence of possible allopatric diversity for species such as E. tenella (FST values ⩜0.34) but not E. acervulina and E. mitis, and highlighted a trend towards widespread genetic variance. We found that three genetic variants described previously only in Australia and southern Africa (operational taxonomic units x, y and z) have a wide distribution across the southern, but not the northern hemisphere. While the drivers for such a polarised distribution of these operational taxonomic unit genotypes remains unclear, the occurrence of genetically variant Eimeria may pose a risk to food security and animal welfare in Europe and North America should these parasites spread to the northern hemisphere
The Oxford-Dartmouth Thirty Degree Survey II: Clustering of Bright Lyman Break Galaxies - Strong Luminosity Dependent Bias at z=4
We present measurements of the clustering properties of bright ()
z4 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) selected from the Oxford-Dartmouth Thirty
Degree Survey (ODT). We describe techniques used to select and evaluate our
candidates and calculate the angular correlation function which we find best
fitted by a power law, with
(with in arcseconds), using a constrained slope of . Using
a redshift distribution consistent with photometric models, we deproject this
correlation function and find a comoving
h Mpc in a flat cosmology for
. This corresponds to a linear bias value of
(assuming ). These data show a
significantly larger and than previous studies at . We
interpret this as evidence that the brightest LBGs have a larger bias than
fainter ones, indicating a strong luminosity dependence for the measured bias
of an LBG sample. Comparing this against recent results in the literature at
fainter (sub-) limiting magnitudes, and with simple models describing
the relationship between LBGs and dark matter haloes, we discuss the
implications on the implied environments and nature of LBGs. It seems that the
brightest LBGs (in contrast with the majority sub- population), have
clustering properties, and host dark matter halo masses, that are consistent

Physical and chemical conditions in methanol maser selected hot-cores and UCHII regions
We present the results of a targeted 3-mm spectral line survey towards the
eighty-three 6.67 GHz methanol maser selected star forming clumps observed by
Purcell et al. 2006. In addition to the previously reported measurements of
HCO+ (1 - 0), H13CO+ (1 - 0), and CH3CN (5 - 4) & (6 -5), we used the Mopra
antenna to detect emission lines of N2H+ (1 - 0), HCN (1 - 0) and HNC (1 - 0)
towards 82/83 clumps (99 per cent), and CH3OH (2 - 1) towards 78/83 clumps (94
per cent). The molecular line data have been used to derive virial and LTE
masses, rotational temperatures and chemical abundances in the clumps, and
these properties have been compared between sub-samples associated with
different indicators of evolution. The greatest differences are found between
clumps associated with 8.6 GHz radio emission, indicating the presence of an
Ultra-Compact HII region, and `isolated' masers (without associated radio
emission), and between clumps exhibiting CH3CN emission and those without. In
particular, thermal CH3OH is found to be brighter and more abundant in
Ultra-Compact HII (UCHII) regions and in sources with detected CH3CN, and may
constitute a crude molecular clock in single dish observations. Clumps
associated with 8.6 GHz radio emission tend to be more massive and more
luminous than clumps without radio emission. This is likely because the most
massive clumps evolve so rapidly that a Hyper-Compact HII or UCHII region is
the first visible tracer of star-formation. The gas-mass to sub-mm/IR
luminosity relation for the combined sample was found to be L proportional to
M**0.68, considerably shallower than expected for massive main-sequence stars
TIMASSS: The IRAS16293-2422 Millimeter And Submillimeter Spectral Survey. I. Observations, calibration and analysis of the line kinematics
While unbiased surveys observable from ground-based telescopes have
previously been obtained towards several high mass protostars, very little
exists on low mass protostars. To fill up this gap, we carried out a complete
spectral survey of the bands at 3, 2, 1 and 0.8 mm towards the solar type
protostar IRAS16293-2422. The observations covered about 200\,GHz and were
obtained with the IRAM-30m and JCMT-15m telescopes. Particular attention was
devoted to the inter-calibration of the obtained spectra with previous
observations. All the lines detected with more than 3 sigma and free from
obvious blending effects were fitted with Gaussians to estimate their basic
kinematic properties. More than 4000 lines were detected (with sigma \geq 3)
and identified, yielding a line density of approximatively 20 lines per GHz,
comparable to previous surveys in massive hot cores. The vast majority (~2/3)
of the lines are weak and due to complex organic molecules. The analysis of the
profiles of more than 1000 lines belonging 70 species firmly establishes the
presence of two distinct velocity components, associated with the two objects,
A and B, forming the IRAS16293-2422 binary system. In the source A, the line
widths of several species increase with the upper level energy of the
transition, a behavior compatible with gas infalling towards a ~1 Mo object.
The source B, which does not show this effect, might have a much lower central
mass of ~0.1 Mo. The difference in the rest velocities of both objects is
consistent with the hypothesis that the source B rotates around the source A.
This spectral survey, although obtained with single-dish telescope with a low
spatial resolution, allows to separate the emission from 2 different
components, thanks to the large number of lines detected. The data of the

We need to talk about manels: the problem of implicit gender bias in sport and exercise medicine.
In 2015, a website (www.allmalepanels.tumblr. com/) began documenting instances of all-male panels (colloquially known as a âmanelâ). This, along with the Twitter hashtag #manel, has helped drive recognition of the persistent and pervasive gender bias in the composition of experts assembled to present at conferences and other events.
Recent social media discussions have similarly highlighted the prevalence of all-male panels in Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM). While, to our knowledge, all-male panel trends in SEM have not yet formally been documented or published, one need look no further than SEM conference committees, keynote speaker lists, panels and other events to see that it exists in practice. Why, in 2018, is SEM and its related disciplines still failing to identify and acknowledge the role that implicit bias plays in the very structure of our own research, practice and education? SEM is, after all, a profession that contains experts, and serves populations, of all genders.
This editorial will introduce the definition, implications and manifestations of implicit gender bias and then explore how the SEM community can begin to address this issue, advance the discussion and develop a more equitable global community
Population policies and education: exploring the contradictions of neo-liberal globalisation
The world is increasingly characterised by profound income, health and social inequalities (Appadurai, 2000). In recent decades development initiatives aimed at reducing these inequalities have been situated in a context of increasing globalisation with a dominant neo-liberal economic orthodoxy. This paper argues that neo-liberal globalisation contains inherent contradictions regarding choice and uniformity. This is illustrated in this paper through an exploration of the impact of neo-liberal globalisation on population policies and programmes. The dominant neo-liberal economic ideology that has influenced development over the last few decades has often led to alternative global visions being overlooked. Many current population and development debates are characterised by polarised arguments with strongly opposing aims and views. This raises the challenge of finding alternatives situated in more middle ground that both identify and promote the socially positive elements of neo-liberalism and state intervention, but also to limit their worst excesses within the population field and more broadly. This paper concludes with a discussion outling the positive nature of middle ground and other possible alternatives
