Hygrothermal performance of building envelopes in the tropics under operative conditions : condensation and mould growth risk appraisal
Poor indoor hygrothermal performance increases the risk of indoor moisture problems and
deterioration due to mould growth, corrosion and damage to archival materials. Hence,
proper control of indoor thermohygric intensity abates indoor moisture and its associated
problems. This paper presents the results of envelopes hygrothermal performance
assessments in a hot and humid climate building with varying operational profile between
adjacent spaces. The case-studied building runs on 24hrs cooling mode in one part against
natural and/or mechanical supply-exhaust fan means on the other. In-situ experiments were
combined with hygrothermal analytical methods to assess the envelope thermal quality
together with the operative conditions against condensation and mould growth risks. The
results show that the building is overcooled leading to poor envelope hygrothermal
performance with associated condensation and mould growth problems on non-airconditioned sides of the envelopes
EFFECT OF ROLE CONFLICT AND ROLE AMBIGUITY ON EMPLOYEE CREATIVITY
The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of role conflict and role ambiguity on employee’s creativity. Exactly how role stress and various performances of individuals are related has received considerable attention, in which stress has been found to affect individual creativity. However, exactly how role stress (role conflict and role ambiguity) and employee creativity are related has seldom been examined empirically. A sample size of 100 was selected and standard questionnaires were distributes among the employees of three public sector universities in Peshawar KPK Pakistan. The conclusions drawn from the study were that role conflict and role ambiguity have negative relationship with employees creativity. Implications of the findings of this study and possible directions for future research are also discussed
A Special Homotopy Continuation Method For A Class of Polynomial Systems
A special homotopy continuation method, as a combination of the polyhedral
homotopy and the linear product homotopy, is proposed for computing all the
isolated solutions to a special class of polynomial systems. The root number
bound of this method is between the total degree bound and the mixed volume
bound and can be easily computed. The new algorithm has been implemented as a
program called LPH using C++. Our experiments show its efficiency compared to
the polyhedral or other homotopies on such systems. As an application, the
algorithm can be used to find witness points on each connected component of a
real variety
Correlation between the RhD genotyping and RhD serotyping in isoimmunized pregnancies
Alloimmunisation was one of the most important causes of perinatal mortality and morbidity by the middle of the last century. The objective of the present study was to investigate the presence of the RHD gene in fetal cells (amniocytes) obtained from amniotic fluid by genotyping to compare it with the RhD serotyping. Also to correlate the presence of RhD gene with the neonatal outcome. This work was carried out at Maternity hospital and Medical Genetics center, while PCR testing was done at the Medical Research center, Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University in the period from 2008 to 2010. The present study included recruiting of 20 RhD negative (sensitized to the RhD antigen) pregnant mothers. The entire study group was subjected to complete general, obstetric and a detailed obstetric ultrasonographic examination. Rh typing and indirect Coomb’s test were also done. Amniocentesis was performed with a 20-gauge needle under continuous ultrasound guidance. RhD serotyping of the fetuses showed that, 14 fetuses (70%) were positive and six fetuses (30%) were negative. While using RhD gentyping 13 cases (65%) were positive and seven cases (35%) were negative (P value = 0.002). Among fetuses positive for RhD genotyping six fetuses (46%) had received postnatal treatment, while among fetuses negative for RhD genotyping, neither of them had received postnatal treatment (P value =0.032), which is statistically significant. From the present study we can conclude that, the identification of an antigen-negative fetus on the basis of the blood group genotype provides significant advantages in managing the pregnancy at risk for HDFN.Keywords: Maternal alloimmunization; Rhesus; RHD; Isoimmunization; Hydrops fetalis; Fetus; Rh negativ
Evaluation of the role of ischemia modified albumin as a new biochemical marker for differentiation between ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke
Objective: To evaluate the role of the detection of ischemia modified albumin (IMA) level in the differentiation between ischemic and hemorrhagic cerebrovascular stroke.Methods: Sixty elderly persons classified into three groups, 25 patients diagnosed with cerebral infarction, 15 patients diagnosed with cerebral hemorrhage, and 20 elderly healthy persons with matched age as control were enrolled in the study. IMA was measured using the available chemical method and computerized tomography (CT) was done for diagnosis of brain lesions.Results: IMA was significantly higher in the patient group than in the control group. There was a positive significant correlation between age, albumin with IMA, (P =0.000 and 0.037 respectively). However there was no statistical significant difference between sex and diagnosis cross tabulation (0.51). It was found that, IMA was statistically higher in the infarction group than the hemorrhage group (P = 0.000) and IMD index was statistically higher in the infarction group than the hemorrhage group (P = 0.013).Conclusion: Our investigation in elderly patients suggests that IMA assay is a sensitive marker forearly detection of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke

Mitochondrial alterations in children with chronic liver disease
Background: Over recent years it has become apparent that the hepatocyte mitochondrion functions both as a cause and as a target of liver injury. Resultant dysfunction of mitochondria yields deficient oxidative phosphorylation, increased generation of reactive oxygen species, impairment of other metabolic pathways and activation of both necrotic and apoptotic pathways of cellular death.Methods: This study was conducted on 26 children and adolescents with chronic liver disease who presented to or were following up in the Pediatric Hepatology Clinic, Children’s Hospital, Ain-Shams University. They were divided into three groups according to the aetiology of liver disease (GI=patients with Wilson’s disease (WD), GII=patients with chronic hepatitis C, GIII=patients with chronic liver disease other thanWilson’s and chronic hepatitis C).Ultrasound-guided gun liver biopsies were performed, under local anaesthesia for all the 26 patients, using a modified 18-gauge truecut needle. Two liver biopsy cores were taken from each patient. One for light and electron microscopic examinations and the other was immediately immersed in liquid nitrogen to be frozen and used forstudying mitochondrial DNA deletions by PCR.Results: Liver steatosis was higher in the group of patients with Wilson’s disease and other liver disease. Electron microscopic examination of the mitochondria revealed significant mitochondrial pleomorphism in patients with Wilson’s disease and patients with chronic hepatitis C infection. Enlarged mitochondria were found to bemore prevalent among patients with chronic hepatitis infection.Three of our patients (11.53%) had mitochondrial DNA deletions. We developed scoring system for mitochondrial affection in our patients, 7 patients (32%) were considered to have mild mitochondrial affection,9 patients (41%) had moderate mitochondrial affection, while 6 patients (27%) had severe mitochondrial affection. Four of the studied patients had no mitochondrial affection.Conclusion: Mitochondria affection is common in chronic liver disease. This mitochondrial affection might be responsible for some of the chronic liver disease manifestation such as easy fatiguability and steatosis
Hepatocellular carcinoma in Pakistan: where do we stand?
Context:
From the 1970s till the mid 1990s, hepatitis B was the most common etiological factor for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Pakistan. Afterwards, a shift in HCC etiology was observed with a steady rise in hepatitis C virus (HCV) related HCC cases. HCV-3a, which is the most prevalent genotype, is also most frequent in HCV related HCC. There was an increase in the proportion of non-B non-C (NBNC) HCC cases as well, which might be attributed to an increase in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Evidence Acquisition:
The age-standardized rate for HCC is 7.64/100 000 in males and 2.8/100 000 in females. Male to female ratio is 3.6:1. Usual age of presentation is in the fifth and sixth decade. Most patients present with advanced disease, as they are not in a regular surveillance program. This is more so for patients with NBNC chronic liver disease. As many sonologists in Pakistan are practicing without sufficient training to pick up early lesions, alpha-fetoprotein is still recommended to compliment ultrasound in the surveillance of HCC.
Results:
Majority of HCC patients present with nonresectable disease. Interventions such as transarterial chemoembolization, radiofrequency ablation, resection and chemotherapy including sorafenib are available in selected centers. Pakistan appears to be in an area of intermediate endemicity for HCC. There is a need for population based epidemiological studies to estimate the exact disease burden.
Conclusions:
Measures to prevent the spread of hepatitis C and B can slow down the epidemic rise in the incidence of HCC in the coming decades. There is a need to implement a proper surveillance program to identify HCC cases at an early stage
Measurements of integrated and differential cross sections for isolated photon pair production in pp collisions at √s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector
A measurement of the production cross section for two isolated photons in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of √s=8 TeV is presented. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb−1 recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The measurement considers photons with pseudorapidities satisfying |ηγ|40GeV and EγT,2>30 GeV for the two leading photons ordered in transverse energy produced in the interaction. The background due to hadronic jets and electrons is subtracted using data-driven techniques. The fiducial cross sections are corrected for detector effects and measured differentially as a function of six kinematic observables. The measured cross section integrated within the fiducial volume is 16.8 ± 0.8 pb . The data are compared to fixed-order QCD calculations at next-to-leading-order and next-to-next-to-leading-order accuracy as well as next-to-leading-order computations including resummation of initial-state gluon radiation at next-to-next-to-leading logarithm or matched to a parton shower, with relative uncertainties varying from 5% to 20%
Charged-particle distributions at low transverse momentum in √s=13 13 TeV pp interactions measured with the ATLAS detector at the LHC
Measurements of distributions of charged particles produced in proton–proton collisions with a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV are presented. The data were recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 151 μb −1 μb−1 . The particles are required to have a transverse momentum greater than 100 MeV and an absolute pseudorapidity less than 2.5. The charged-particle multiplicity, its dependence on transverse momentum and pseudorapidity and the dependence of the mean transverse momentum on multiplicity are measured in events containing at least two charged particles satisfying the above kinematic criteria. The results are corrected for detector effects and compared to the predictions from several Monte Carlo event generators
