    Overbidding and heterogeneous behavior in contest experiments: a meta-comment on cross-cultural differences

    We revisit the analyses by Sheremeta (2013) and Chowdhury and Moffatt (2017), who pool experimental data from 30 Tullock contests to explain the phenomenon of overbid- ding. The authors find that the overbidding rate is positively related to the number of contestants and has an inverted U-shaped relationship with the relative endowment. We reuse their data and extend the analysis in the direction of cross-cultural differ- ences, focusing on ethno-linguistic-religious fractionalization as a country-level measure. The results suggest an increased explanatory power of the model, with fractionalization negatively relating to overbidding. In addition, the extended model shows that in the one-shot game the overbidding rate is significantly higher than in the case of repeated interactions. We discuss possible interpretations of our findings

It has been proposed that the extensive sequence variability among members of these protein families could play a role in parasite infectivity and evasion of host immune response. In previous reports we showed evidence suggesting that sequences located in these regions are subjected to recombination. To support this hypothesis we introduced a double-strand break (DSB) at a specific target site in a T. cruzi subtelomeric region cloned into an artificial chromosome (pTAC). This construct was used to transfect T. cruzi epimastigotes expressing the I-SceI meganuclease. Examination of the repaired sequences showed that DNA repair occurred only through homologous recombination (HR) with endogenous subtelomeric sequences. Our findings suggest that DSBs in subtelomeric repetitive sequences followed by HR between them may contribute to increased variability in T. cruzi multigene families.     Listeriosi in Lombardia, 2016: caratteristiche epidemiologiche e molecolari

    Introduzione. La listeriosi \ue8 una patologia provocata dall\u2019ingestione di alimenti contaminati dal batterio Listeria monocytogenes. \uc8 considerata atipica per le sue peculiari caratteristiche di invasivit\ue0 e severit\ue0 clinica, gravata da una letalit\ue0 pari al 20-30%. In questa sede, riferiamo le caratteristiche epidemiologiche e molecolari della listeriosi in Lombardia, osservate attraverso il lavoro svolto presso il Laboratorio di Riferimento Regionale (LRR) nel 2016. Metodi. Nello studio sono stati inclusi i casi rilevati sia dal sistema di notifiche MAINF sia quelli pervenuti presso il LRR tramite invio del ceppo da parte degli ospedali. Su questi ultimi \ue8 stata fatta l\u2019analisi molecolare tramite PFGE. Risultati. Nel 2016 sono stati osservati 66 casi di listeriosi, \ua0corrispondenti a un\u2019incidenza regionale di 0.66 casi/100.000 abitanti. Il 9% (6/66) \ue8 risultato correlato con la gravidanza. L\u2019analisi molecolare ha mostrato la presenza di cluster (similarit\ue0 >80%) tra i ceppi coinvolti. Discussione. I risultati mostrano un andamento della listeriosi simile ai dati europei e, pi\uf9 in generale, con la letteratura. Il numero dei casi legati alla gravidanza \ue8, per\uf2, nettamente inferiore a quello riportato in letteratura: ci\uf2 potrebbe essere frutto di una reale minor frequenza dell\u2019infezione nelle gestanti in Lombardia, ma anche di una minor sensibilit\ue0 diagnostica, spiegando anche l\u2019assenza di casi nelle prime settimane di gestazione. La presenza di cluster indica una correlazione tra i casi dovuta, probabilmente, alla presenza del patogeno nelle filiere alimentari e la sua dispersione per mezzo della commercializzazione su ampia scala temporale/spaziale del prodotto contaminato

    Multi-gap superconductivity in a BaFe1.84Co0.16As2 film from optical measurements at terahertz frequencies

    We measured the THz reflectance properties of a high quality epitaxial thin film of the Fe-based superconductor BaFe1.84_{1.84}Co0.16_{0.16}As2_2 with Tc_c=22.5 K. The film was grown by pulsed laser deposition on a DyScO3_3 substrate with an epitaxial SrTiO3_3 intermediate layer. The measured RS/RNR_S/R_N spectrum, i.e. the reflectivity ratio between the superconducting and normal state reflectance, provides clear evidence of a superconducting gap ΔA\Delta_A close to 15 cm−1^{-1}. A detailed data analysis shows that a two-band, two-gap model is absolutely necessary to obtain a good description of the measured RS/RNR_S/R_N spectrum. The low-energy ΔA\Delta_A gap results to be well determined (ΔA\Delta_A=15.5±\pm0.5 cm−1^{-1}), while the value of the high-energy gap ΔB\Delta_B is more uncertain (ΔB\Delta_B=55±\pm7 cm−1^{-1}). Our results provide evidence of a nodeless isotropic double-gap scenario, with the presence of two optical gaps corresponding to 2Δ/kTc\Delta/kT_c values close to 2 and 7.Comment: Published Versio

    Antiulcer and Anti-inflammatory Activity of Aerial Parts Enicostemma littorale Blume

    The antiulcer and in vitro anti-inflammatory activities of the aerial parts of Enicostemma littorale against aspirin, ethanol, and pyloric ligation-induced ulcers in rats and bovine serum albumin denaturation were studied. The extract (200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg po) was administered to the overnight fasted rats, one hour prior to aspirin / alcohol / pyloric ligation challenge. The ulcer index, tissue GSH levels, and lipid peroxidation levels were estimated in all the models of ulcers and the volume of gastric secretion, acidity, and pH, were estimated in the pyloric ligation model of ulcers. Pretreatment with the extract showed a dose-dependent decrease in the ulcer index (Against Aspirin, ethanol challenge, and pyloric ligation. The prior administration of the extract also reduced the total acidity, free acidity, and volume of gastric secretion, and elevated the gastric pH. In addition, it was also observed that the extract inhibited the serum albumin denaturation in a dose-dependent manner. It may be concluded that the methanolic extract possesses antiulcer activity, and the anti-inflammatory activity of the extract may be attributed to the antioxidant potential, as reported earlier

    Achievement and Aspiration

    In contrast to previous work, our study considers both meaning and mediation factors in the achievement-aspiration relationship. In a sample of graduate students ("academic-career aspirants"), we examine sex differences in the achievement- aspiration relationship as they vary with type of academic achievement and professional aspirations, and as it is mediated by individuals' perceptions of their professional roles and their faculty's support. We find: (1) Women's achievement-aspiration conversion is different from, but not necessarily lower than, men's. Rather, the strength and direction of the relationship vary with aspiration type (traditional versus alternative) and, to some extent, with specific types of academic achievement (e.g., paper publication and GPA). (2) The mediators of the achievement-aspiration relationship also vary by sex and aspiration type.     Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV. The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b, leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W' boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed coupling combinations have been placed.
