    Trace element variations in the Middle Frasnian <i>punctata</i> zone (Late Devonian) in the western Canada sedimentary basin: changes in oceanic bioproductivity and paleoredox spurred by a pulse of terrestrial afforestation?

    The ‘punctata Event’ (Early–Middle Frasnian transition, Late Devonian) was recently recognized as yet another episode of major geochemical perturbations associated with the Middle-Late Devonian ecosystem readjustments which culminated in the Frasnian-Fammenian (F/F) mass extinction event, one of five largest of the Phanerozoic. We report variations in total organic carbon (TOC), magnetic susceptibility (MS), major, minor and trace element proxies (for changes in detrital input, bioproductivity and redox conditions) across the P.punctata conodont biozone in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (Western Laurussia). Geochemical proxies and MS display similar trends, suggesting an intimate interdependence. The data is thus evaluated within 1) a regional sequence stratigraphic perspective and 2) the marine-terrestrial teleconnections model (Algeo & Sheckler, 1998), whereby the rise and expansion of arborescent vascular land plants (the first ‘true’ forests) results in a transient increase in pedogenesis and solute delivery (hence biolimiting micronutrients) to the oceans. The punctata Event approximately coincides temporally with the advent of archaeopterid forest expansion and rise to dominance in the Frasnian-Fammenian age. This evolutionary event is speculated to have amplified the detrital influx which was likely already elevated by conditions of sea level lowstand, early transgression, episodes of mountain building and increased weathering during Frasnian warming. Statistical correlations among proxies suggest that changes in detrital input were the main driver of a bioproductivity increase. Elevated organic matter export from the photic zone likely led to the deposition and later preservation of organic-carbon rich facies under facilitated conditions of bottom water oxygen depletion. This paper is intended to supplement the growing body of work aimed at elucidating the causes of the punctata Event and documenting ecosystem responses to major perturbations of the global carbon cycle

    The discovery and subsequent detailed study of T dwarfs have provided many surprises and pushed the physics and modelling of cool atmospheres in unpredicted directions. Distance is a critical parameter for studies of these objects to determine intrinsic luminosities, test binarity and measure their motion in the Galaxy. We describe a new observational programme to determine distances across the full range of T-dwarf subtypes using the New Technology Telescope (NTT)/SOFI telescope/instrument combination. We present preliminary results for ten objects, five of which represent new distances.Peer reviewe

    We review various approaches to the calculation of QCD condensates and of the nucleon characteristics in nuclear matter. We show the importance of their self-consistent treatment. The first steps in such treatment appeared to be very instructive. It is shown that the alleged pion condensation anyway can not take place earlier than the restoration of the chiral symmetry.     On the selection of AGN neutrino source candidates for a source stacking analysis with neutrino telescopes

    The sensitivity of a search for sources of TeV neutrinos can be improved by grouping potential sources together into generic classes in a procedure that is known as source stacking. In this paper, we define catalogs of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and use them to perform a source stacking analysis. The grouping of AGN into classes is done in two steps: first, AGN classes are defined, then, sources to be stacked are selected assuming that a potential neutrino flux is linearly correlated with the photon luminosity in a certain energy band (radio, IR, optical, keV, GeV, TeV). Lacking any secure detailed knowledge on neutrino production in AGN, this correlation is motivated by hadronic AGN models, as briefly reviewed in this paper. The source stacking search for neutrinos from generic AGN classes is illustrated using the data collected by the AMANDA-II high energy neutrino detector during the year 2000.     Construction of plant transformation vectors carrying beet necrotic yellow vein virus coat protein gene (ii)- plant transformation

    Fragments containing the coat protein gene of beet necrotic yellow vein virus were cloned in two plant transformation vectors: pCAMBIA3301M with the bar gene as selectable marker, and pCAMBIA1304M, with resistance to hygromycin. Three constructs were made of each vector: CPL, containing coat protein gene with leader sequence; CPS with coat protein gene, and CPSas with coat protein gene in antisense orientation. Vectors pC3301MCPL, pC3301MCPS. and pC3301MCPSas were used in Agrobacterium—mediated transformation of Nicotiana tabacum (tobacco), Nicotiana excelsior and Nicotiana benthamiana. Regenerants that developed roots on selective media were tested for the presence of CP fragments and the bar gene, but most regenerants were nontransformed (50-83% escapes). After all rooted plants had been selfed, and T1 seed germinated on selective media, only plants descending from one N. excelsior regenerant transformed with pC3301MCPS were positive for presence of bar gene and CPS fragment. Tobacco and Nicotiana benthamiana were transformed with constructs pC1304MCPS and pC1304MCPSas. Transformation efficiency was much higher and approximately 50% of regenerants that rooted on media with 20 mg l−1 hygromycin were positive for the presence of CP fragments. All T1 plants were positive for presence of CP fragments

    A First Search for coincident Gravitational Waves and High Energy Neutrinos using LIGO, Virgo and ANTARES data from 2007

    We present the results of the first search for gravitational wave bursts associated with high energy neutrinos. Together, these messengers could reveal new, hidden sources that are not observed by conventional photon astronomy, particularly at high energy. Our search uses neutrinos detected by the underwater neutrino telescope ANTARES in its 5 line configuration during the period January - September 2007, which coincided with the fifth and first science runs of LIGO and Virgo, respectively. The LIGO-Virgo data were analysed for candidate gravitational-wave signals coincident in time and direction with the neutrino events. No significant coincident events were observed.     Synchronous diversification of Sulawesi's iconic artiodactyls driven by recent geological events

    The high degree of endemism on Sulawesi has previously been suggested to have vicariant origins, dating back to 40 Ma. Recent studies, however, suggest that much of Sulawesi’s fauna assembled over the last 15 Myr. Here, we test the hypothesis that more recent uplift of previously submerged portions of land on Sulawesi promoted diversification and that much of its faunal assemblage is much younger than the island itself. To do so, we combined palaeogeographical reconstructionswithgenetic andmorphometric datasets derived from Sulawesi’s three largest mammals: the babirusa, anoa and Sulawesi warty pig. Our results indicate that although these species most likely colonized the area that is now Sulawesi at different times (14 Ma to 2-3 Ma), they experienced an almost synchronous expansion from the central part of the island. Geological reconstructions indicate that this area was above sea level for most of the last 4 Myr, unlike most parts of the island. We conclude that emergence of land on Sulawesi (approx. 1-2 Myr) may have allowed species to expand synchronously. Altogether, our results indicate that the establishment of the highly endemic faunal assemblage on Sulawesiwas driven by geological events over the last few million years
