Perceived Vertical and Lateropulsion: Clinical Syndromes, Localization, and Prognosis

    Get PDF
We present a clinical classification of central vestibular syndromes according to the three major planes of action of the vestibulo-ocular reflex: yaw, roll, and pitch. The plane-specific syndromes are determined by ocular motor, postural, and percep tual signs. Yaw plane signs are horizontal nystagmus, past pointing, rotational and lat eral body falls, deviation of perceived straight-ahead to the left or right. Roll plane signs are torsional nystagmus, skew deviation, ocular torsion, tilts of head, body, and perceived vertical in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. Pitch plane signs are upbeat/downbeat nystagmus, forward/backward tilts and falls, deviations of the per ceived horizon. The thus defined vestibular syndromes allow a precise topographic analysis of brainstem lesions according to their level and side. Special emphasis is placed on the vestibular roll plane syndromes of ocular tilt reaction, lateropulsion in Wallenberg's syndrome, thalamic and cortical astasia and their association with roll plane tilt of perceived vertical. Recovery is based on a functionally significant central compensation of a vestibular tone imbalance, the mechanism of which is largely un known. Physical therapy may facilitate this central compensation, but this has not yet been proven in prospective studies

Author Institution: Department of Biology, University of AkronThree woodland sites were selected for collecting data on the frequency of pollination of Orchis spectabilis by bumblebees in northeast Ohio. A total of 82 hours was spent at 2 of these sites, which were chosen for observing the foraging o£ Bombus queens on spring ephemerals. The effect of Aesculus glabra, Dicentra canadensis, Geranium maculatum, Iris pseudacorus, and Pedicularis canadensis in attracting bumblebees in relation to 0. spectabilis pollination was also studied. Of the 123 bumblebees captured, 74% foraged on flowers and 26% hunted for nesting sites. Caging experiments on 0. spectabilis indicated 4% self-compatibility and 100% outcrossing fertility and suggested a required animal pollen vector. In the two populations studied, 17-21% of the plants flowered while fruit production ranged 0—11%. Seed production measured by two methods averaged 3485 seeds/fruit and 6656 seeds/fruit, respectively. Both methods indicated more than adequate seed set to replace the existing populations even if only one fruit/season was produced. 0. spectabilis is a woodland plant species relying on chance visits by either woodlandor meadow-dwelling Bombus queens for pollination. The limited occurrence of this plant species in northeast Ohio has not been attributed to the low pollinator frequency it receives

Anyone who has AIDS is a victim. If AIDS produces a victim then who is the perpetrator? AIDS can be transmitted through intimate sexual contact, by sharing contaminated needles, via infected blood or blood products, and through passage of the virus from infected mothers to their newborns. This comment will concentrate on transmission through infected blood or blood products, and the blood donor. The discussion will focus on the civil and criminal liabilities of a blood donor with the AIDS virus

Statute of Limitations in Ohio Medical Malpractice An Old Trend Returns and a New Trend Evolves

In Gaines v. Preterm Cleveland, Inc. the Ohio Supreme Court reversed prior law in two significant areas of medical malpractice. First, the court held that, a plaintiff in a medical malpractice action who reasonably did not discover the cause of their injuries until more than three years after the act constituting the alleged malpractice may not be constitutionally deprived of a full year to pursue a medical claim by virtue of the four-year statute of repose contained in R.C. 2305. II(B). Secondly, the court held that, a positive misrepresentation of a patient\u27s condition, upon which the patient reasonably relies to his detriment, constitutes a cause of action in fraud independent of any claim of malpractice. Following Gaines, a litigant in a medical malpractice action involving fraudulent misrepresentation may be able to utilize the four year statute of limitations for fraud, thereby extending the tolling of the statute from one year to four years. The decision also removes the absolute time bar for all medical malpractice litigants and allows them to bring a cause of action within one year of the date of discovery of the malpractice

The eXtended Updated Reference Strategy for the form finding of tensile structures

    Get PDF
In this paper, the eXtended Updated Reference Strategy is presented. Starting from the established Updated Reference Strategy all related issues, which are involved for this methodology, are identified. It will be shown that the eXtended Updated Reference Strategy is able to solve the “correct” form finding problem in one non-linear iteration step. By applying the eXtended Updated Reference Strategy to well-known form finding problems the difference in convergence in comparison to establish methods like the force density method or the Updated Reference Strategy is discusse

Advanced cutting pattern generation – Consideration of structural requirements in the optimization process

    Get PDF
This paper presents extensions to optimized cutting pattern generation through inverse engineering regarding structural requirements. The optimized cutting pattern generation through inverse engineering is a general approach for the cutting pattern generation which is based on the description of the underlying mechanical problem. The three dimensional surface, which is defined through the form finding process, represents the final structure after manufacturing. For this surface the coordinates in three dimensional space Ω3D and the finally desired prestress state σprestress are known. The aim is to find a surface in a two dimensional space Ω2D which minimizes the difference between the elastic stresses σel,2D→3D arising through the manufacturing process and the final prestress σprestress. Thus the cutting pattern generation leads to an optimization problem, were the positions of the nodes in the two dimensional space Ω2D are the design variables. In this paper various improvements to the method will be shown. The influence of the seam lines to the stress distribution in the membrane is investigated. Additionally, the control of equal edge length for associated patterns is an example for important enhancement
