Conservative management of mallet injuries:A national survey of current practice in the UK
Introduction
Mallet injuries are common, and usually treated conservatively. Various systematic reviews have found a lack of evidence regarding best management and it is unclear whether this uncertainty is reflected in current UK practice.
Methods
An online survey was developed to determine current practice for the conservative treatment of mallet injury amongst specialist hand clinicians in the UK, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists and surgeons. Clinicianâs views of study outcome selection were also explored to improve future trials.
Results
336 professionals completed the survey. Inconsistency in overall practice was observed in splint type choice, time to discharge to GP, and the assessment of adherence. Greater consistency was observed for recommended duration of continuous immobilisation. Bony injuries were most commonly splinted for six weeks (n=228, 78%) and soft tissue injuries for either eight weeks (n=172, 56%) or six weeks (n=119, 39%). Postimmobilisation splinting was frequently recommended, but duration varied between two and 10 weeks. The outcome rated as most important by all clinicians was patient satisfaction.
Discussion
There is overall variation in the current UK conservative management of mallet injuries, and the development of a standardised, evidence based protocol is required. Cliniciansâ opinions may be used to develop a core set of outcome measures, which will improve standardisation and comparability of future trials.</p

Soil mineral nitrogen benefits derived from legumes and comparisons of the apparent recovery of legume or fertiliser nitrogen by wheat
Nitrogen (N) contributed by legumes is an important component of N supply to subsequent cereal crops, yet few Australian grain-growers routinely monitor soil mineral N before applying N fertiliser. Soil and crop N data from 16 dryland experiments conducted in eastern Australia from 1989â2016 were examined to explore the possibility of developing simple predictive relationships to assist farmer decision-making. In each experiment, legume crops were harvested for grain or brown-manured (BM, terminated before maturity with herbicide), and wheat, barley or canola were grown. Soil mineral N measured immediately before sowing wheat in the following year was significantly higher (Pâ<â0.05) after 31 of the 33 legume pre-cropping treatments than adjacent non-legume controls. The average improvements in soil mineral N were greater for legume BM (60â±â16âkgâN/ha; nâ=â5) than grain crops (35â±â20âkgâN/ha; nâ=â26), but soil N benefits were similar when expressed on the basis of summer fallow rainfall (0.15â±â0.09âkgâN/ha per mm), residual legume shoot dry matter (9â±â5âkgâN/ha per t/ha), or total legume residue N (28â±â11%). Legume grain crops increased soil mineral N by 18â±â9âkgâN/ha per t/ha grain harvested. Apparent recovery of legume residue N by wheat averaged 30â±â10% for 20 legume treatments in a subset of eight experiments. Apparent recovery of fertiliser N in the absence of legumes in two of these experiments was 64â±â16% of the 51â75âkg fertiliser-N/ha supplied. The 25 year dataset provided new insights into the expected availability of soil mineral N after legumes and the relative value of legume N to a following wheat crop, which can guide farmer decisions regarding N fertiliser use.Mark B. Search for the standard model Higgs boson in tau final states
We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson using hadronically
decaying tau leptons, in 1 inverse femtobarn of data collected with the D0
detector at the Fermilab Tevatron ppbar collider. We select two final states:
tau plus missing transverse energy and b jets, and tau+ tau- plus jets. These
final states are sensitive to a combination of associated W/Z boson plus Higgs
boson, vector boson fusion and gluon-gluon fusion production processes. The
observed ratio of the combined limit on the Higgs production cross section at
the 95% C.L. to the standard model expectation is 29 for a Higgs boson mass of
115 GeV.Comment: publication versio
Search for W' bosons decaying to an electron and a neutrino with the D0 detector
This Letter describes the search for a new heavy charged gauge boson W'
decaying into an electron and a neutrino. The data were collected with the D0
detector at the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton Collider at a
center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV, and correspond to an integrated luminosity
of about 1 inverse femtobarn. Lacking any significant excess in the data in
comparison with known processes, an upper limit is set on the production cross
section times branching fraction, and a W' boson with mass below 1.00 TeV can
be excluded at the 95% C.L., assuming standard-model-like couplings to
fermions. This result significantly improves upon previous limits, and is the

Measurement of the B0-anti-B0-Oscillation Frequency with Inclusive Dilepton Events
The - oscillation frequency has been measured with a sample of
23 million \B\bar B pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II
asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we select events in which both B
mesons decay semileptonically and use the charge of the leptons to identify the
flavor of each B meson. A simultaneous fit to the decay time difference

Measurement of the ratios of the Z/G* + >= n jet production cross sections to the total inclusive Z/G* cross section in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV
We present a study of events with Z bosons and jets produced at the Fermilab
Tevatron Collider in ppbar collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV.
The data sample consists of nearly 14,000 Z/G* -> e+e- candidates corresponding
to the integrated luminosity of 0.4 fb-1 collected using the D0 detector.
Ratios of the Z/G* + >= n jet cross sections to the total inclusive Z/G* cross
section have been measured for n = 1 to 4 jet events. Our measurements are
found to be in good agreement with a next-to-leading order QCD calculation and
with a tree-level QCD prediction with parton shower simulation and

Search for a scalar or vector particle decaying into Zgamma in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV
We present a search for a narrow scalar or vector resonance decaying into
Zgamma with a subsequent Z decay into a pair of electrons or muons. The data
for this search were collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron
ppbar collider at a center of mass energy sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. Using 1.1 (1.0)
fb-1 of data, we observe 49 (50) candidate events in the electron (muon)
channel, in good agreement with the standard model prediction. From the
combination of both channels, we derive 95% C.L. upper limits on the cross
section times branching fraction (sigma x B) into Zgamma. These limits range
from 0.19 (0.20) pb for a scalar (vector) resonance mass of 600 GeV/c^2 to 2.5
(3.1) pb for a mass of 140 GeV/c^2.Comment: Published by Phys. Lett.
Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment
This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and
W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with
the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and
the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto
the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions
f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV
and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw
> 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour,
are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017
+/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second
