A Fragment of Dependence Logic Capturing Polynomial Time
In this paper we study the expressive power of Horn-formulae in dependence
logic and show that they can express NP-complete problems. Therefore we define
an even smaller fragment D-Horn* and show that over finite successor structures
it captures the complexity class P of all sets decidable in polynomial time.
Furthermore we study the question which of our results can ge generalized to
the case of open formulae of D-Horn* and so-called downwards monotone
polynomial time properties of teams
A Van Benthem Theorem for Modal Team Semantics
The famous van Benthem theorem states that modal logic corresponds exactly to
the fragment of first-order logic that is invariant under bisimulation. In this
article we prove an exact analogue of this theorem in the framework of modal
dependence logic MDL and team semantics. We show that modal team logic MTL,
extending MDL by classical negation, captures exactly the FO-definable
bisimulation invariant properties of Kripke structures and teams. We also
compare the expressive power of MTL to most of the variants and extensions of
MDL recently studied in the area
Modal Independence Logic

Do humans and Convolutional Neural Networks attend to similar areas during scene classification: Effects of task and image type
Deep Learning models like Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) are powerful
image classifiers, but what factors determine whether they attend to similar
image areas as humans do? While previous studies have focused on technological
factors, little is known about the role of factors that affect human attention.
In the present study, we investigated how the tasks used to elicit human
attention maps interact with image characteristics in modulating the similarity
between humans and CNN. We varied the intentionality of human tasks, ranging
from spontaneous gaze during categorization over intentional gaze-pointing up
to manual area selection. Moreover, we varied the type of image to be
categorized, using either singular, salient objects, indoor scenes consisting
of object arrangements, or landscapes without distinct objects defining the
category. The human attention maps generated in this way were compared to the
CNN attention maps revealed by explainable artificial intelligence (Grad-CAM).
The influence of human tasks strongly depended on image type: For objects,
human manual selection produced maps that were most similar to CNN, while the
specific eye movement task has little impact. For indoor scenes, spontaneous
gaze produced the least similarity, while for landscapes, similarity was
equally low across all human tasks. To better understand these results, we also
compared the different human attention maps to each other. Our results
highlight the importance of taking human factors into account when comparing
the attention of humans and CNN
Prospective Multicenter Trial of Cervical Arthroplasty With the ROTAIO® Cervical Disc Prosthesis
Objective
Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Arthroplasty (ACDA) is an established treatment for degenerative cervical disc disease and seems to be an alternative to fusion in minimizing the risk of Adjacent Segment Disease (ASD). The ROTAIO® cervical disc prosthesis is a novel unconstrained implant with a variable center of rotation aiming at physiological motion. The objective of this multicenter prospective trial was to evaluate clinical outcome and complications within 2 years.
Material and Methods
120 patients (72 females and 48 males with a median age of 43.0 years; range: 23 to 60 years) underwent ACDA (ROTAIO®, SIGNUS Medical, Alzenau, Germany) and were prospectively followed for 24 months. Preoperative complaints were mainly associated with radiculopathy (n=104) or myelopathy (n=16). There were 108 monosegmental and 12 bisegmental procedures including 6 hybrid constructs.
Clinical outcome was evaluated at 3, 12 and 24 months by the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for head, neck and arm pain, the Neck Disability Index (NDI), the Work Limitation Questionnaire (WL-26), the Patient`s Satisfaction Index (PSI) and a Quality of Life Questionnaire (SF-36). The Nurick Score, the Modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association Score (mJOA) plus a Composite Success Rate have been additionally applied. Finally, complications, the patient`s overall satisfaction and the amount of analgesics were assessed.
Results
Highly significant clinical improvements were observed according to NDI and VAS (p<0.0001 (arm); p<0.001 (neck); p=0.002 (head)) at all postoperative time points. Analgetic medication could be reduced after 3 months in 91.3%, after 12 months in 87.1% and after 24 months in 95.2% of patients. Doctor`s visits for cervical spine problems have been reduced in 93.8% after 24 months.
Patient`s overall satisfaction was high after 3, 12 and 24 months with 83.5%, 78.4% and 79.1% of patients, while 4.1%, 6.8% and 7.0% respectively were not satisfied. The composite success rate was 77.5% after 12 months and 76.9% after 24 months. There were no major complications in this series. Slight subsidence of the prosthesis was observed in 2 patients and 3 patients demonstrated fusion after 24 months. 2 patients developed symptomatic foraminal stenosis, so that implant removal and fusion was performed.
Conclusion
The ROTAIO® cervical disc prosthesis is a safe and efficient treatment option for symptomatic degenerative disc disease demonstrating excellent clinical results at 2 years. Outcome proves to be stable over time with very low revision rates
Quasi-elastic polarization-transfer measurements on the deuteron in anti-parallel kinematics
We present measurements of the polarization-transfer components in the
H reaction, covering a previously unexplored kinematic
region with large positive (anti-parallel) missing momentum, , up
to 220 MeV, and . These measurements, performed
at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI), were motivated by theoretical calculations which
predict small final-state interaction (FSI) effects in these kinematics, making
them favorable for searching for medium modifications of bound nucleons in
nuclei. We find in this kinematic region that the measured
polarization-transfer components and and their ratio agree with the
theoretical calculations, which use free-proton form factors. Using this, we
establish upper limits on possible medium effects that modify the bound
proton's form factor ratio at the level of a few percent. We also
compare the measured polarization-transfer components and their ratio for H
to those of a free (moving) proton. We find that the universal behavior of
H, He and C in the double ratio
is maintained in the positive
missing-momentum region

The Iceland Microcontinent and a continental Greenland-Iceland-Faroe Ridge
The breakup of Laurasia to form the Northeast Atlantic Realm was the culmination of a long period of tectonic unrest extending back to the Late Palaeozoic. Breakup was prolonged and complex and disintegrated an inhomogeneous collage of cratons sutured by cross-cutting orogens. Volcanic rifted margins formed, which are blanketed by lavas and underlain variously by magma-inflated, extended continental crust and mafic high-velocity lower crust of ambiguous and probably partly continental provenance. New rifts formed by diachronous propagation along old zones of weakness. North of the Greenland-Iceland-Faroe Ridge the newly forming rift propagated south along the Caledonian suture. South of the Greenland-Iceland-Faroe Ridge it propagated north through the North Atlantic Craton along an axis displaced ~ 150 km to the west of the northern rift. Both propagators stalled where the confluence of the Nagssugtoqidian and Caledonian orogens formed a transverse barrier. Thereafter, the ~ 400-km-wide latitudinal zone between the stalled rift tips extended in a distributed, unstable manner along multiple axes of extension that frequently migrated or jumped laterally with shearing occurring between them in diffuse transfer zones. This style of deformation continues to the present day. It is the surface expression of underlying magma-assisted stretching of ductile mid- and lower continental crust which comprises the Icelandic-type lower crust that underlies the Greenland-Iceland-Faroe Ridge. This, and probably also one or more full-crustal-thickness microcontinents incorporated in the Ridge, are capped by surface lavas. The Greenland-Iceland-Faroe Ridge thus has a similar structure to some zones of seaward-dipping reflectors. The contemporaneous melt layer corresponds to the 3–10 km thick Icelandic-type upper crust plus magma emplaced in the ~ 10–30-km-thick Icelandic-type lower crust. This model can account for seismic and gravity data that are inconsistent with a gabbroic composition for Icelandic-type lower crust, and petrological data that show no reasonable temperature or source composition could generate the full ~ 40-km thickness of Icelandic-type crust observed. Numerical modeling confirms that extension of the continental crust can continue for many tens of Myr by lower-crustal flow from beneath the adjacent continents. Petrological estimates of the maximum potential temperature of the source of Icelandic lavas are up to 1450 °C, no more than ~ 100 °C hotter than MORB source. The geochemistry is compatible with a source comprising hydrous peridotite/pyroxenite with a component of continental mid- and lower crust. The fusible petrology, high source volatile contents, and frequent formation of new rifts can account for the true ~ 15–20 km melt thickness at the moderate temperatures observed. A continuous swathe of magma-inflated continental material beneath the 1200-km-wide Greenland-Iceland-Faroe Ridge implies that full continental breakup has not yet occurred at this latitude. Ongoing tectonic instability on the Ridge is manifest in long-term tectonic disequilibrium on the adjacent rifted margins and on the Reykjanes Ridge, where southerly migrating propagators that initiate at Iceland are associated with diachronous swathes of unusually thick oceanic crust. Magmatic volumes in the NE Atlantic Realm have likely been overestimated and the concept of a monogenetic North Atlantic Igneous Province needs to be reappraised. A model of complex, piecemeal breakup controlled by pre-existing structures that produces anomalous volcanism at barriers to rift propagation and distributes continental material in the growing oceans fits other oceanic regions including the Davis Strait and the South Atlantic and West Indian oceans
