A New Look at Translation: Teaching tools for language and literature

Does translation have a place in the modern language or literature classroom? This article argues that as long as translation is recognized as a distinct skill rather than a path to language acquisition it can and should play a role in language instruction. The rising popularity of Web-based machine translation (WBMT) sites among students points to a need to help foreign language learners better understand the translation process. Along with a discussion of how instructors can minimize inappropriate use of WBMT, the article provides examples of how translation in the proper context can be used productively to teach both language and literature. It also shows that teachers have much to gain by supporting translation and interpretation as professional options for advanced language learners. Examples are given in Spanish

Partial mirror symmetry, lattice presentations and algebraic monoids

This is the second in a series of papers that develops the theory of reflection monoids, motivated by the theory of reflection groups. Reflection monoids were first introduced in arXiv:0812.2789. In this paper we study their presentations as abstract monoids. Along the way we also find general presentations for certain join-semilattices (as monoids under join) which we interpret for two special classes of examples: the face lattices of convex polytopes and the geometric lattices, particularly the intersection lattices of hyperplane arrangements. Another spin-off is a general presentation for the Renner monoid of an algebraic monoid, which we illustrate in the special case of the "classical" algebraic monoids.Comment: 41 page

Developments in the Law: Judicial Review of Agency Rulemaking and Adjudication

Transporter, resursslöseri och okunskap hos konsumenter tyder på att den globala matindustrin är ohållbar och ett alternativ till den industrialiserade matproduktionen är att konsumera mer närproducerat och ekologiskt och öka medvetenheten om hur vår mat hamnar på bordet. Därför är det intressant att studera fenomenet stadsodling som uppstår på allt fler ställen runtom i världen. Syftet med detta arbete är att undersöka de ekologiska, sociala och ekonomiska hållbarhetsaspekterna med stadsodling och frågeställningen lyder: ”Hur kan stadsodling bidra till ekologisk, social och ekonomisk hållbarhet?” För att besvara frågeställningen studeras litteratur och ett fall i verkligheten, Trädgård på spåret. Resultatet visar att det finns olika typer av stadsodling och att Trädgård på spåret är en variant som har flera sociala och ekologiska aspekter. Det visar sig att stadsodling som ett medel till att försörja en stads invånare med mat är orealistiskt men att stadsodling har många andra aspekter inom hållbarhet. Stadsodling kan verka för social hållbarhet genom att vara en plats för rekreation och sociala möten. Det kan även bidra med identitet och lokalt engagemang. Även ekologisk hållbarhet kan uppstå genom att biologisk mångfald främjas och pedagogiska värden kring livsmedel och ekologi uppstår. Capacity-building in open education: an Australian approach

Addressing the gap between global open educational resource (OER) proliferation and the slow adoption of OER and open educational practices (OEP) in Australian higher education, this paper focuses on a capacity-building project targeting academics, academic support staff and educational developers. The conception, design, development, piloting and evaluation of an open, online professional development micro course are detailed, highlighting key aspects of the open design and considerations for sharing and reuse across higher education institutions. The open micro course introduces five key OEP concepts through five contemporary curriculum design topics, using knowledge co-creation activities which engage learners in iterative shaping of the course, and generate artefacts for demonstration and recognition of learning. Opportunities for short to longer term capacity-building which leverage the micro course are also discussed, in response to significant shifts underway in higher education funding and professional development priorities
