    Re-description of Dysponetus joeli Olivier et al., 2012 (Polychaeta, Chrysopetalidae), with a new key to species of the genus

    Dysponetus is a genus of the family Chrysopetalidae with twelve currently described species. Specimens are fragile and easily damaged or broken during sampling making identification difficult. The most recently described species, Dysponetus joeli Olivier et al., 2012, from the Bay of Biscay and the English Channel, was described from a few small, damaged and poorly preserved specimens. New specimens from the Isles of Scilly, in much better condition, resembled D. joeli except for the absence of ventral cirri on segment 3. Examination of the type material of D. joeli showed it to be identical to these new specimens and highlighted errors in the original description of the species. The present paper corrects the errors and a revised key to species is produced. The differences between D. joeli and the two most similar species, D. bipapillatus Dahlgren, 1996 and D. macroculatus Dahlgren, 1996 are also detailed

    Comparison of Methods of Pump Scheduling in Water Supply Systems

    In the domestic water supply industry, the reduction of pumping costs is a continuing objective. With the efficient scheduling of pumping operations, it is considered that 10% of the annual expenditure on energy and related costs may be saved. A typical cost function will include all of the expenditure caused by the pumping process and also consider the electrical cost of pumping taking into account the various electrical tariffs, as well as peak demand and pump switching costs. Using only fixed speed pumps, it is possible to use an efficient dynamic programming based method, provided that the storage reservoir levels are known. Other techniques that are showing fruitful results in optimisation are genetic programming and simulated annealing. This paper compares these methods and discusses which is more appropriate in this type of pump scheduling problem

    In 1989, the UK Medical Research Council (MRC) agreed that, if feasible, a randomized controlled trial to assess the long-term risks and benefits of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was a priority. Feasibility work began in 1990 and demonstrated that a large-scale multicenter trial was possible. An application for funding for a main trial was submitted to MRC in 1993 and, after extensive review, funding was released in late 1996. Set-up work for the trial - the Women's International Study of long Duration Oestrogen after Menopause (WISDOM) - began in 1997 with recruitment in 1999. In October 2002, following the early discontinuation of one arm of the US Women's Health Initiative HRT trial, the MRC decided to stop the WISDOM trial.     Selection and configuration are widely met tasks in design; this is an example of a web-based selection/configuration tool with embedded optimisation. Pumps inevitably deteriorate over their product lifecycle, in which interaction generally occurs in terms of flow, pressure and electricity consumption. Practical implementations of pump scheduling suggest that a 10% of the annual expenditure on energy costs may be saved. The object is to minimise the energy cost incurred, while selecting the best schedule of legal available pumps. The results illustrate that the recording of pump characteristics over the internet provides an efficient method of pump performance and evaluation

    Active geothermal systems with entrained seawater as analogues for low-sulphidation epithermal mineralization

    The paradigm for low-sulphidation (LS) volcanic-arc associated mineralization is the active geothermal systems located along the Taupo Volcanic Zone (e.g. Broadlands). However, this analogue is inapt where fluid salinities are consistently in excess of 3.5 wt % NaCl. LS mineralization on Milos (Aegean arc) records high paleofluid-salinities. The δD and δ18O data do not exemplify 18O-shifted meteoric waters—typical of terrestrial geothermal systems. Nor is a submarine origin indicated—stable isotope data show mixing between meteoric, seawater and volcanic-arc gases. Strontium isotope data are comparable to a nearby active seawater-entrained geothermal system. These are features seen in hydrothermal systems associated with emergent volcanoes. For the Milos LS mineralization, high-salinity fluids show it cannot be explained by a Broadlands-type model. The absence of saliferous sequences and significant intrusive rocks preclude these as salinity sources. The similarities between paleo and active systems in terms of salinity, δD–δ18O and strontium isotope systematics strongly suggest that seawater is the main source for Na and Cl. We suggest geothermal systems, containing seawater, associated with emergent volcanoes are an alternative analogue for LS epithermal mineralization. Furthermore, they bridge the gap between submarine, and large-scale terrestrial geothermal systems—the modern analogues for VHMS and epithermal mineralisation in the scheme of intrusion-centered hydrothermal mineralization

    Physicians' Practice of Dispensing Medicines: A Qualitative Study

    Objectives: The physical act of giving medication to patients to administer away from a health care setting, dispensing, is normally performed by pharmacists. Dispensing of medication by physicians is a neglected patient safety issue, and having observed considerable variation in practice, the lead author sought to explore this issue further. A literature review yielded zero articles pertaining to this, so an exploratory study was commenced. The qualitative arm, relating to junior physicians' experience of, and training in, dispensing, is reported here. Methods: Focus groups were conducted to explore the beliefs, ideas, and experiences of physicians-in-training pertaining to dispensing of medication. These were recorded and transcribed. The transcriptions were thematically analyzed using the grounded theory. Results: The emergency department was the most common site of dispensing. No formal training in dispensing had been received. Informal training was variable in content and utility. The physicians felt that dispensing was part of their role. Conclusions: Despite being expected to dispense, and the patient safety issues involved in giving drugs to patients to use at home, physicians do not feel that they have been trained to undertake this task.
