Calculating fertilizer value of supplemental feed for cattle on pasture (2006)

Most cattle maintained on pasture receive supplemental feed during some portion of the year. Supplements are commonly fed to grazing cattle when pasture forage quality and quantity are below animal requirements

The objective of this publication is to identify the differences and similarities between managing municipal wastewater and managing the manure from grow-finish pig systems.New 2/07/1

Economic Feasibility of Impermeable Lagoon Covers

    Get PDF
This draft is dated April 2002.This paper addresses the economic feasibility of complying with the proposed rule of “a zero discharge requirement from the production area that does not allow for an overflow under any circumstances,” presented as “Option 5” on page 3060 of the Federal Register (Vol. 66, No. 9, Friday, January 12, 2001). In the proposed rule, the EPA suggested the strategies of improved water management, covered storage or additional storage to meet the no discharge criteria. While improved water management and additional storage may aid in manure management, covered storage was viewed as the only way to guarantee compliance with the “no overflow under any circumstances” wording of the rule. EPA staff have repeatedly indicated that all swine manure storage structures would need to be covered in some way to meet the rule's requirements

The Physics of the B Factories

This work is on the Physics of the B Factories. Part A of this book contains a brief description of the SLAC and KEK B Factories as well as their detectors, BaBar and Belle, and data taking related issues. Part B discusses tools and methods used by the experiments in order to obtain results. The results themselves can be found in Part C

The ATLAS inner detector trigger performance in pp collisions at 13 TeV during LHC Run 2

    Get PDF
The design and performance of the inner detector trigger for the high level trigger of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider during the 2016-18 data taking period is discussed. In 2016, 2017, and 2018 the ATLAS detector recorded 35.6 fb1^{-1}, 46.9 fb1^{-1}, and 60.6 fb1^{-1} respectively of proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. In order to deal with the very high interaction multiplicities per bunch crossing expected with the 13 TeV collisions the inner detector trigger was redesigned during the long shutdown of the Large Hadron Collider from 2013 until 2015. An overview of these developments is provided and the performance of the tracking in the trigger for the muon, electron, tau and bb-jet signatures is discussed. The high performance of the inner detector trigger with these extreme interaction multiplicities demonstrates how the inner detector tracking continues to lie at the heart of the trigger performance and is essential in enabling the ATLAS physics programme

Calculating the value of manure as a fertilizer source

    Get PDF
Manure has value on a field only if it offsets the need to purchase other nutrients or soil amendments. Manure has characteristics that may reduce its value relative to that of commercial chemical fertilizers. Manure can be a less dependable nitrogen source and is perceived as a source of weed seeds. Because manure is an unbalanced fertilizer source, meeting crop needs for one nutrient may result in application of too much or too little of other crop nutrients. Low nutrient concentration in manure increases handling and application costs. Manure has positive attributes as well. It is a slow-release fertilizer, and the organic material can improve soil quality.Ray Massey (Extension Professor, Commercial Agriculture Program), John Lory (Extension Associate Professor, Commercial Agriculture Program)New 12/97; Revised 6/13/We

Sampling poultry litter for nutrient testing (1999)

    No full text
Poultry litter is a mixture of poultry manure and the sawdust or rice hull bedding from confinement buildings used for raising broilers, turkeys and other birds. Poultry growers must periodically clean their buildings to promote bird health and limit buildup of wet manure
