    The Experimental Analysis of Information Security Management Issues for Online Financial Services

    E-commerce offers the banking industry great opportunity, but also creates a set of new risks and vulnerability such as security threats. Information security, therefore, is an essential management and technical requirement for any efficient and effective financial activities over the Internet. Still, its definition is a complex endeavor due to the constant technological and business change and requires a coordinated match of managerial and technical solutions. This research intends to provide an instrument to test and evaluate the strategies to counter threats facing online financial institutions through an artificial economic setup at the Synthetic Environments for Simulation and Analysis (SEAS) laboratory at the Krannert Graduate School of Management, Purdue University. The research also intends to provide guidelines for forming information security policies and strategies for survival and success in the dynamic and hostile business environment. Initial results indicate that online banks that were proactive in recognizing the threats and devising policies to counter them generated greater revenue and were able to focus on the core activities. Public disclosure of security breaches by the victim banks resulted in better overall health of the simulated economy. The simulation is still in its development and testing phase and the research team intends to present the findings at the conference

    The impact of BMI on long-term anthropometric and metabolic outcomes in girls with idiopathic central precocious puberty treated with GnRHas

    BackgroundGonadotropin-releasing hormone analogs (GnRHas) are effective in increasing the final height of children with idiopathic central precocious puberty (ICPP). However, in previous years, some transient metabolic complications have been described during this treatment, for which there are no long-term outcome data. Our study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of GnRHas and clarify if body mass index (BMI) at diagnosis of ICPP could influence long-term outcomes. MethodsThis was an observational, retrospective study that recruited a cohort of girls with ICPP. Data for anthropometric measures, fasting lipid profile, and glucose metabolism were collected at baseline [when GnRHas treatment started (T1)], at the end of the treatment (T2), and near-final height (nFH) or final height (FH) (T3). Predicted adult height (PAH) was calculated at T1 following Bayley and Pinneau's method. Analysis was carried out using BMI standard deviation score (SDS) categories at T1 (group A, normal weight, vs. group B, overweight/obese). ResultsFifty-seven girls with ICPP who were treated with GnRHas were enrolled in the study (group A vs. group B: 33 vs. 24 patients, aged 7.86 +/- 0.81 vs. 7.06 +/- 1.61 years, respectively; p < 0.05). In the study population, nFH/FH was in line with the target height (TH) (p = 0.54), with a mean absolute height gain of 11.82 +/- 5.35 cm compared with PAH. Even if the length of therapy was shorter (group A vs. group B: 1.84 +/- 2.15 vs. 2.10 +/- 0.81 years, respectively; p < 0.05) and the age at menarche was younger (group A vs. group B: 10.56 +/- 1.01 vs. 11.44 +/- 0.85 years, respectively; p < 0.05) in group B than in group A, the nFH/FH gain was still comparable between the two groups (p = 0.95). At nFH/FH, BMI SDS was still greater in group B than in group A (p = 0.012), despite the fact that BMI SDS significantly increased in group A only (p < 0.05). Glucose metabolism got worst during GnRHa with a complete restoring after it, independently from pre-treatment BMI. The ratio of low-density to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol transiently deteriorated during treatment with GnRHas in group A only (p = 0.030). ConclusionsOur results confirm the effectiveness of treatment with GnRHas on growth and do not support the concern that being overweight and obese can impair the long-term outcomes of GnRHas therapy. However, the observed transient impairment of metabolic parameters during treatment suggests that clinicians should encourage ICPP girls treated with GnRHas to have a healthy lifestyle, regardless of their pretreatment BMI

    UNet and MobileNet CNN-based model observers for CT protocol optimization: comparative performance evaluation by means of phantom CT images

    Purpose: The aim of this work is the development and characterization of a model observer (MO) based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs), trained to mimic human observers in image evaluation in terms of detection and localization of low-contrast objects in CT scans acquired on a reference phantom. The final goal is automatic image quality evaluation and CT protocol optimization to fulfill the ALARA principle. Approach: Preliminary work was carried out to collect localization confidence ratings of human observers for signal presence/absence from a dataset of 30,000 CT images acquired on a PolyMethyl MethAcrylate phantom containing inserts filled with iodinated contrast media at different concentrations. The collected data were used to generate the labels for the training of the artificial neural networks. We developed and compared two CNN architectures based respectively on Unet and MobileNetV2, specifically adapted to achieve the double tasks of classification and localization. The CNN evaluation was performed by computing the area under localization-ROC curve (LAUC) and accuracy metrics on the test dataset. Results: The mean of absolute percentage error between the LAUC of the human observer and MO was found to be below 5% for the most significative test data subsets. An elevated inter-rater agreement was achieved in terms of S-statistics and other common statistical indices. Conclusions: Very good agreement was measured between the human observer and MO, as well as between the performance of the two algorithms. Therefore, this work is highly supportive of the feasibility of employing CNN-MO combined with a specifically designed phantom for CT protocol optimization programs

The texts allow us to investigate this phenomenon through the interpretation of selected passages which show how the common narrative of some certain significant events attests to the existence (and the fervent activity) of monastic circuits in Gaza, marked by particular lifestyles and guided by doctrinal choices. This inquiry, as well as providing important information on a certain kind of monasticism, offers the chance to make useful comparisons with the other forms of monasticism that enlivened the East in Late Antiquity

    Deep phenotyping of the neuroimaging and skeletal features in KBG syndrome: a study of 53 patients and review of the literature

    Background: KBG syndrome is caused by haploinsufficiency of ANKRD11and is characterised by macrodontia of upper central incisors, distinctive facial features, short stature, skeletal anomalies, developmental delay, brain malformations and seizures. The central nervous system (CNS) and skeletal features remain poorly defined. Methods: CNS and/or skeletal imaging were collected from molecularly confirmed individuals with KBG syndrome through an international network. We evaluated the original imaging and compared our results with data in the literature. Results: We identified 53 individuals, 44 with CNS and 40 with skeletal imaging. Common CNS findings included incomplete hippocampal inversion and posterior fossa malformations; these were significantly more common than previously reported (63.4% and 65.9% vs 1.1% and 24.7%, respectively). Additional features included patulous internal auditory canal, never described before in KBG syndrome, and the recurrence of ventriculomegaly, encephalic cysts, empty sella and low-lying conus medullaris. We found no correlation between these structural anomalies and epilepsy or intellectual disability. Prevalent skeletal findings comprised abnormalities of the spine including scoliosis, coccygeal anomalies and cervical ribs. Hand X-rays revealed frequent abnormalities of carpal bone morphology and maturation, including a greater delay in ossification compared with metacarpal/phalanx bones. Conclusion: This cohort enabled us to describe the prevalence of very heterogeneous neuroradiological and skeletal anomalies in KBG syndrome. Knowledge of the spectrum of such anomalies will aid diagnostic accuracy, improve patient care and provide a reference for future research on the effects ofANKRD11variants in skeletal and brain development

    Differential cross section measurements for the production of a W boson in association with jets in proton–proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV

    Measurements are reported of differential cross sections for the production of a W boson, which decays into a muon and a neutrino, in association with jets, as a function of several variables, including the transverse momenta (pT) and pseudorapidities of the four leading jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta (HT), and the difference in azimuthal angle between the directions of each jet and the muon. The data sample of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb[superscript −1]. The measured cross sections are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo generators, MadGraph + pythia and sherpa, and to next-to-leading-order calculations from BlackHat + sherpa. The differential cross sections are found to be in agreement with the predictions, apart from the pT distributions of the leading jets at high pT values, the distributions of the HT at high-HT and low jet multiplicity, and the distribution of the difference in azimuthal angle between the leading jet and the muon at low values.United States.     Severe early onset preeclampsia: short and long term clinical, psychosocial and biochemical aspects

    Preeclampsia is a pregnancy specific disorder commonly defined as de novo hypertension and proteinuria after 20 weeks gestational age. It occurs in approximately 3-5% of pregnancies and it is still a major cause of both foetal and maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide1. As extensive research has not yet elucidated the aetiology of preeclampsia, there are no rational preventive or therapeutic interventions available. The only rational treatment is delivery, which benefits the mother but is not in the interest of the foetus, if remote from term. Early onset preeclampsia (<32 weeks’ gestational age) occurs in less than 1% of pregnancies. It is, however often associated with maternal morbidity as the risk of progression to severe maternal disease is inversely related with gestational age at onset2. Resulting prematurity is therefore the main cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity in patients with severe preeclampsia3. Although the discussion is ongoing, perinatal survival is suggested to be increased in patients with preterm preeclampsia by expectant, non-interventional management. This temporising treatment option to lengthen pregnancy includes the use of antihypertensive medication to control hypertension, magnesium sulphate to prevent eclampsia and corticosteroids to enhance foetal lung maturity4. With optimal maternal haemodynamic status and reassuring foetal condition this results on average in an extension of 2 weeks. Prolongation of these pregnancies is a great challenge for clinicians to balance between potential maternal risks on one the eve hand and possible foetal benefits on the other. Clinical controversies regarding prolongation of preterm preeclamptic pregnancies still exist – also taking into account that preeclampsia is the leading cause of maternal mortality in the Netherlands5 - a debate which is even more pronounced in very preterm pregnancies with questionable foetal viability6-9. Do maternal risks of prolongation of these very early pregnancies outweigh the chances of neonatal survival? Counselling of women with very early onset preeclampsia not only comprises of knowledge of the outcome of those particular pregnancies, but also knowledge of outcomes of future pregnancies of these women is of major clinical importance.
