Perceptions of Growth Monitoring and Promotion Among an International Panel of District Medical Officers
The growth chart has been proposed as an educational tool to make the
child's growth visible to both health workers and caregivers and to
enhance communication between them. In the case of growth faltering,
this would trigger timely corrective measures. Although the relevance
of growth monitoring and promotion (GMP) has often been questioned in
the literature, opinions of District Medical Officers responsible for
local implementation of GMP are unknown. The aim of this qualitative
research was to explore the perceptions and difficulties of an
international panel of District Medical Officers regarding GMP. As an
exploratory study, in-depth interviews of an international panel of
District Medical Officers (n=19) were conducted. Data were coded using
the QSR Nudist 5.0 software. A discrepancy between intended purposes
and practice of GMP was detected at two levels. First, lack of
participation of care-givers was reported. Second, the District Medical
Officers expressed a restrictive interpretation of the concept of
growth monitoring. The communication with parents was never reported as
a means or a result of GMP, neither as an evaluation criterion of
programme efficiency. The growth chart was mainly considered a tool
intended to be used by health services for the purpose of diagnosis.
This two-fold discrepancy between the intention of international
policy-planners and practice of local programme implementers could be a
crucial factor affecting the performance of GMP. More emphasis should
be put on social communication and involvement of caregivers
Polarizations of J/psi and psi(2S) Mesons Produced in ppbar Collisions at 1.96 TeV
We have measured the polarizations of \jpsi and \psiprime mesons as
functions of their transverse momentum \pt when they are produced promptly in
the rapidity range with \pt \geq 5 \pgev. The analysis is performed
using a data sample with an integrated luminosity of about 800 \ipb collected
by the CDF II detector. For both vector mesons, we find that the polarizations
become increasingly longitudinal as \pt increases from 5 to 30 \pgev. These
results are compared to the predictions of nonrelativistic quantum
chromodynamics and other contemporary models. The effective polarizations of
\jpsi and \psiprime mesons from -hadron decays are also reported.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, published in Physical Review Letter
First Measurement of the W Boson Mass in Run II of the Tevatron
We present a measurement of the W boson mass using 200/pb of data collected
in pbar p collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV by the CDF II detector at Run II of
the Fermilab Tevatron. With a sample of 63964 W -> e nu candidates and 51128 W
-> mu nu candidates, we measure M_W = (80413 +- 34 (stat) +- 34 (syst) = 80413
+- 48) MeV/c^2. This is the most precise single measurement of the W boson mass

baryon through the decay chain , where

Evidence for observation is based on a signal whose probability of arising from
the estimated background is 6.6 x 10^{-15}, or 7.7 Gaussian standard

Precise measurement of the top quark mass in the lepton+jets topology at CDF II
We present a measurement of the mass of the top quark from proton-antiproton
collisions recorded at the CDF experiment in Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron.
We analyze events from the single lepton plus jets final state (). The top quark mass is extracted
using a direct calculation of the probability density that each event
corresponds to the final state. The probability is a function of both
the mass of the top quark and the energy scale of the calorimeter jets, which
is constrained {\it in situ} by the hadronic boson mass. Using 167 events
observed in 955 pb of integrated luminosity, we achieve the single
most precise measurement of the top quark mass, 170.8 2.2 (stat.)
1.4 (syst.) GeV/.Comment: accepted by Phys. Rev. Let
Search for New Particles Leading to Z+jets Final States in Collisions at TeV
We present the results of a search for new particles that lead to a \Z boson
plus jets in collisions at TeV using the Collider
Detector at Fermilab (CDF II). A data sample with a luminosity of 1.06 \ifb\
collected using \Z boson decays to and is used. We describe a
completely data-based method to predict the dominant background from
standard-model \Z+jet events. This method can be similarly applied to other
analyses requiring background predictions in multi-jet environments, as shown
when validating the method by predicting the background from +jets in \ttbar
production. No significant excess above the background prediction is observed,
and a limit is set using a fourth generation quark model to quantify the
acceptance. Assuming and using a leading-order
calculation of the cross section, quark masses below 268 \gev/c^2
are excluded at 95% confidence level.Comment: To be submitted to PR
Model-independent evidence for contributions to decays
The data sample of decays acquired with the
LHCb detector from 7 and 8~TeV collisions, corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of 3 fb, is inspected for the presence of or
contributions with minimal assumptions about
contributions. It is demonstrated at more than 9 standard deviations that
decays cannot be described with
contributions alone, and that contributions play a dominant role in
this incompatibility. These model-independent results support the previously
obtained model-dependent evidence for charmonium-pentaquark

Quantum numbers of the state and orbital angular momentum in its decay
Angular correlations in decays, with , and , are used to measure
orbital angular momentum contributions and to determine the value of
the meson. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 3.0
fb of proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector. This
determination, for the first time performed without assuming a value for the
orbital angular momentum, confirms the quantum numbers to be .
The is found to decay predominantly through S wave and an upper limit

Search for resonant ttbar production in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV
We report on a search for narrow-width particles decaying to a top and
antitop quark pair. The data set used in the analysis corresponds to an
integrated luminosity of 680 pb^{-1} collected with the Collider Detector at
Fermilab in Run II. We present 95% confidence level upper limits on the cross
section times branching ratio. Assuming a specific topcolor-assisted
technicolor production model, the leptophobic Z' with width
\Gamma_{Z'}=0.012M_{Z'}, we exclude the mass range M_{Z'} < 725 GeV/c^2 at the

Suppression of charged particle production at large transverse momentum in central Pb-Pb collisions at TeV
Inclusive transverse momentum spectra of primary charged particles in Pb-Pb
collisions at = 2.76 TeV have been measured by the ALICE
Collaboration at the LHC. The data are presented for central and peripheral
collisions, corresponding to 0-5% and 70-80% of the hadronic Pb-Pb cross
section. The measured charged particle spectra in and GeV/ are compared to the expectation in pp collisions at the same
, scaled by the number of underlying nucleon-nucleon
collisions. The comparison is expressed in terms of the nuclear modification
factor . The result indicates only weak medium effects ( 0.7) in peripheral collisions. In central collisions,
reaches a minimum of about 0.14 at -7GeV/ and increases
significantly at larger . The measured suppression of high- particles is stronger than that observed at lower collision energies,
indicating that a very dense medium is formed in central Pb-Pb collisions at
