Food spoilage in beeswax impregnated cotton cloth wraps compared to standard storage methods
Beeswax food wraps have gained popularity as a sustainable, natural alternative to single use options such as plastic bags, plastic wrap, and wax paper. Despite limited evidence, sellers advertise beeswax wraps as having antimicrobial benefits that help food stay fresh longer. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the ability of beeswax impregnated cotton cloth to inhibit food spoilage relative to traditional methods. We designed a prospective trial in which strawberry, bread, and cheese specimens were wrapped in one of the 3 materials: 1) beeswax impregnated cotton cloth, 2) wax paper, or 3) plastic bags alone and followed for 15 days at 65oF for progression of mold growth and other signs of deterioration. For most specimen/timepoint combinations (87%), we found no differences between storage methods. For the 13% of specimen/timepoint combinations where we did note a significant difference, beeswax wraps fared the worst. While beeswax wraps may be preferred as a natural food storage material, their ability to preserve food is no better than conventional options
R-matrix theory of driven electromagnetic cavities
Resonances of cylindrical symmetric microwave cavities are analyzed in
R-matrix theory which transforms the input channel conditions to the output
channels. Single and interfering double resonances are studied and compared
with experimental results, obtained with superconducting microwave cavities.
Because of the equivalence of the two-dimensional Helmholtz and the stationary
Schroedinger equations, the results present insight into the resonance
structure of regular and chaotic quantum billiards.Comment: Revtex 4.
Layer by layer - Combining Monads
We develop a method to incrementally construct programming languages. Our
approach is categorical: each layer of the language is described as a monad.
Our method either (i) concretely builds a distributive law between two monads,
i.e. layers of the language, which then provides a monad structure to the
composition of layers, or (ii) identifies precisely the algebraic obstacles to
the existence of a distributive law and gives a best approximant language. The
running example will involve three layers: a basic imperative language enriched
first by adding non-determinism and then probabilistic choice. The first
extension works seamlessly, but the second encounters an obstacle, which
results in a best approximant language structurally very similar to the
probabilistic network specification language ProbNetKAT

A Threat Assessment and Security Analysis of the Three Sports Facilities of Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis NCAA Softball Fields, Carroll Stadium, and the IU Natatorium
This research report provides a security assessment of the Softball Fields, Carroll Stadium, and the Natatorium Complex at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). The purpose of this report is to prevent and mitigate harm to visitors and these facilities which resulting from human-made or natural disasters. Research is guided by the hypothesis that these facilities- due to their respective importance, locations, and attendance patterns are in harm’s way; and that certain strategies of prevention, protection, and mitigation coupled with effective preparedness, response, and recovery can lessen risk, improve security and provide
A THREAT ASSESSMENT AND SECURITY ANALYSIS 5
added resilience. Further, “harm’s way” is considered to be either a natural disaster or a human-made disaster, accident, active provocation, or act of terrorism. Methods of analysis include applied research; predominantly utilizing qualitative data with some quantitative investigation.
Results of this assessment illustrate that these venues possess numerous vulnerabilities to both natural and human-made threats that if exposed, could result in serious consequences. The two most likely natural hazards identified include straight-line winds and tornadoes. Further, the most likely human threats to these facilities arise from a potential terrorist vehicle attack (TVA) and an active shooter. This project also identifies a specific need for additional planning to prevent an IED or VBIED attack on the Natatorium.
Common themes from the attached three case studies reveal that given theses vulnerabilities, the following safety and security adjustments are recommended:
Surveillance equipment
Metal detectors
Security bollards or other temporary barriers
Evacuation routes and shelter in place plans
Special event security procedures
Weather related technology and protocols
Staff training for emergency situation
Circumstellar molecular composition of the oxygen-rich AGB star IK~Tau: II. In-depth non-LTE chemical abundance analysis
Aims: Little information exists on the circumstellar molecular abundance
stratifications of many molecules. The aim is to study the circumstellar
chemical abundance pattern of 11 molecules and isotopologs (CO,
CO, SiS, SiO, SiO, SiO, HCN, CN, CS, SO, SO) in
the oxygen-rich evolved star IK~Tau. Methods: We have performed an in-depth
analysis of a large number of molecular emission lines excited in the
circumstellar envelope around IK~Tau. The analysis is done based on a non-local
thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) radiative transfer analysis, which
calculates the temperature and velocity structure in a self-consistent way. The
chemical abundance pattern is coupled to theoretical outer wind model
predictions including photodestruction and cosmic ray ionization. Not only the
integrated line intensities, but also the line shapes, are used as diagnostic
tool to study the envelope structure. Results: The deduced wind acceleration is
much slower than predicted from classical theories. SiO and SiS are depleted in
the envelope, possibly due to the adsorption onto dust grains. For HCN and CS a
clear difference with respect to inner wind non-equilibrium predictions is
found, either indicating uncertainties in the inner wind theoretical modeling
or the possibility that HCN and CS (or the radical CN) participate in the dust
formation. The low signal-to-noise profiles of SO and CN prohibit an accurate
abundance determination; the modeling of high-excitation SO lines is
cumbersome, possibly related to line misidentifications or problems with the
collisional rates. The SiO isotopic ratios (SiO/SiO and
SiO/SiO) point toward an enhancement in SiO compared to
results of classical stellar evolution codes. Predictions for HO lines in
the spectral range of the Herschel/HIFI mission are performed. [abbreviated]Comment: 24 pagees, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic
Multi-centre parallel arm randomised controlled trial to assess the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a group-based cognitive behavioural approach to managing fatigue in people with multiple sclerosis
Abstract (provisional)
Background
Fatigue is one of the most commonly reported and debilitating symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS); approximately two-thirds of people with MS consider it to be one of their three most troubling symptoms. It may limit or prevent participation in everyday activities, work, leisure, and social pursuits, reduce psychological well-being and is one of the key precipitants of early retirement. Energy effectiveness approaches have been shown to be effective in reducing MS-fatigue, increasing self-efficacy and improving quality of life. Cognitive behavioural approaches have been found to be effective for managing fatigue in other conditions, such as chronic fatigue syndrome, and more recently, in MS. The aim of this pragmatic trial is to evaluate the clinical and cost-effectiveness of a recently developed group-based fatigue management intervention (that blends cognitive behavioural and energy effectiveness approaches) compared with current local practice.
Methods
This is a multi-centre parallel arm block-randomised controlled trial (RCT) of a six session group-based fatigue management intervention, delivered by health professionals, compared with current local practice. 180 consenting adults with a confirmed diagnosis of MS and significant fatigue levels, recruited via secondary/primary care or newsletters/websites, will be randomised to receive the fatigue management intervention or current local practice. An economic evaluation will be undertaken alongside the trial. Primary outcomes are fatigue severity, self-efficacy and disease-specific quality of life. Secondary outcomes include fatigue impact, general quality of life, mood, activity patterns, and cost-effectiveness. Outcomes in those receiving the fatigue management intervention will be measured 1 week prior to, and 1, 4, and 12 months after the intervention (and at equivalent times in those receiving current local practice). A qualitative component will examine what aspects of the fatigue management intervention participants found helpful/unhelpful and barriers to change.
Discussion
This trial is the fourth stage of a research programme that has followed the Medical Research Council guidance for developing and evaluating complex interventions. What makes the intervention unique is that it blends cognitive behavioural and energy effectiveness approaches. A potential strength of the intervention is that it could be integrated into existing service delivery models as it has been designed to be delivered by staff already working with people with MS. Service users will be involved throughout this research. Trial registration: Current Controlled Trials ISRCTN7651747
What are Employers Looking for in New Veterinary Graduates? A Content Analysis of UK Veterinary Job Advertisements
As veterinary educators, we have a responsibility to ensure that our graduates are prepared for working life. Veterinary practices, like any other businesses, rely on good employees, and the implications of a poor match between newly employed veterinarian and employing practice could be extremely costly in terms of personal well-being and enjoyment of work as well as the time, financial, and goodwill costs of high staff turnover for the practice. Contemporary veterinary curricula encompass a range of teaching to complement the clinical content; including communication, teamwork, problem solving, and business skills, to support good practice and increase the employability of new graduates. Previous studies have examined the qualities required of early career veterinarians as viewed by educators, recent graduates, pet owners, and practitioners; however, nobody has previously constructed a picture of the employment market for new veterinary graduates by exploring the nature of its recruitment advertising. Three months of UK veterinary job advertisements were examined. Content analysis yielded 10 distinct characteristics desired by employers of early career veterinarians. The most common by far was “enthusiasm,” followed by an interest in a particular area of practice, being an “all-rounder” (i.e., having a broad range of skills), demonstrating good communication skills, teamwork, client care, and independence, as well as being caring, ambitious, and having high clinical standards. While several of these qualities are expected and are specifically taught in veterinary school, the dominance of “enthusiasm” as a specifically desired trait raises interesting questions about the characteristics of veterinary students who we are supporting, encouraging, or maybe even suppressing, during veterinary training
