The isocohomological property, higher Dehn functions, and relatively hyperbolic groups
The property that the polynomial cohomology with coefficients of a finitely
generated discrete group is canonically isomorphic to the group cohomology is
called the (weak) isocohomological property for the group. In the case when a
group is of type , i.e. that has a classifying space with the
homotopy type of a cellular complex with finitely many cells in each dimension,
we show that the isocohomological property is equivalent to the universal cover
of the classifying space satisfying polynomially bounded higher Dehn functions.
If a group is hyperbolic relative to a collection of subgroups, each of which
is polynomially combable (respectively and isocohomological), then
we show that the group itself has these respective properties too. Combining
with the results of Connes-Moscovici and Dru{\c{t}}u-Sapir we conclude that a
group satisfies the Novikov conjecture if it is relatively hyperbolic to
subgroups that are of property RD, of type and isocohomological.Comment: 35 pages, no figure
Learning Moore Machines from Input-Output Traces
The problem of learning automata from example traces (but no equivalence or
membership queries) is fundamental in automata learning theory and practice. In
this paper we study this problem for finite state machines with inputs and
outputs, and in particular for Moore machines. We develop three algorithms for
solving this problem: (1) the PTAP algorithm, which transforms a set of
input-output traces into an incomplete Moore machine and then completes the
machine with self-loops; (2) the PRPNI algorithm, which uses the well-known
RPNI algorithm for automata learning to learn a product of automata encoding a
Moore machine; and (3) the MooreMI algorithm, which directly learns a Moore
machine using PTAP extended with state merging. We prove that MooreMI has the
fundamental identification in the limit property. We also compare the
algorithms experimentally in terms of the size of the learned machine and
several notions of accuracy, introduced in this paper. Finally, we compare with
OSTIA, an algorithm that learns a more general class of transducers, and find
that OSTIA generally does not learn a Moore machine, even when fed with a
characteristic sample
Elastic-to-plastic crossover below the peak effect in the vortex solid of YBa2Cu3O7 single crystals
We report on transport and ac susceptibility studies below the peak effect in
twinned YBa2Cu3O7 single crystals. We find that disorder generated at the peak
effect can be partially inhibited by forcing vortices to move with an ac
driving current. The vortex system can be additionally ordered below a
well-defined temperature where elastic interactions between vortices overcome
pinning-generated stress and a plastic to elastic crossover seems to occur. The
combined effect of these two processes results in vortex structures with

Probing the 6He halo structure with elastic and inelastic proton scattering
Proton elastic scattering and inelastic scattering to the first excited state
of 6He have been measured over a wide angular range using a 40.9A MeV 6He beam.
The data have been analyzed with a fully microscopic model of proton-nucleus
scattering using 6He wave functions generated from large space shell model
calculations. The inelastic scattering data show a remarkable sensitivity to

Measurement of W± boson production in Pb+Pb collisions at √sNN=5.02Te with the ATLAS detector
A measurement of W± boson production in Pb+Pb collisions at sNN=5.02Te is reported using data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2015, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 0.49nb-1. The W± bosons are reconstructed in the electron or muon leptonic decay channels. Production yields of leptonically decaying W± bosons, normalised by the total number of minimum-bias events and the nuclear thickness function, are measured within a fiducial region defined by the detector acceptance and the main kinematic requirements. These normalised yields are measured separately for W+ and W- bosons, and are presented as a function of the absolute value of pseudorapidity of the charged lepton and of the collision centrality. The lepton charge asymmetry is also measured as a function of the absolute value of lepton pseudorapidity. In addition, nuclear modification factors are calculated using the W± boson production cross-sections measured in pp collisions. The results are compared with predictions based on next-to-leading-order calculations with CT14 parton distribution functions as well as with predictions obtained with the EPPS16 and nCTEQ15 nuclear parton distribution functions. No dependence of normalised production yields on centrality and a good agreement with predictions are observed for mid-central and central collisions. For peripheral collisions, the data agree with predictions within 1.7 (0.9) standard deviations for W- (W+) bosons
Performance of prototypes for the ALICE electromagnetic calorimeter
The performance of prototypes for the ALICE electromagnetic sampling
calorimeter has been studied in test beam measurements at FNAL and CERN. A
array of final design modules showed an energy resolution of about
11% / 1.7 % with a uniformity of the response
to electrons of 1% and a good linearity in the energy range from 10 to 100 GeV.
The electromagnetic shower position resolution was found to be described by 1.5
mm 5.3 mm /. For an electron identification
efficiency of 90% a hadron rejection factor of was obtained.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure
High rate, fast timing Glass RPC for the high {\eta} CMS muon detectors
The HL-LHC phase is designed to increase by an order of magnitude the amount
of data to be collected by the LHC experiments. To achieve this goal in a
reasonable time scale the instantaneous luminosity would also increase by an
order of magnitude up to . The region of the forward
muon spectrometer () is not equipped with RPC stations. The
increase of the expected particles rate up to (including a
safety factor 3) motivates the installation of RPC chambers to guarantee
redundancy with the CSC chambers already present. The actual RPC technology of
CMS cannot sustain the expected background level. The new technology that will
be chosen should have a high rate capability and provides a good spatial and
timing resolution. A new generation of Glass-RPC (GRPC) using low-resistivity
(LR) glass is proposed to equip at least the two most far away of the four high
muon stations of CMS. First the design of small size prototypes and
studies of their performance in high-rate particles flux is presented. Then the
proposed designs for large size chambers and their fast-timing electronic

The ATLAS EventIndex: a BigData catalogue for all ATLAS experiment events
The ATLAS EventIndex system comprises the catalogue of all events collected,
processed or generated by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN LHC accelerator, and
all associated software tools to collect, store and query this information.
ATLAS records several billion particle interactions every year of operation,
processes them for analysis and generates even larger simulated data samples; a
global catalogue is needed to keep track of the location of each event record
and be able to search and retrieve specific events for in-depth investigations.
Each EventIndex record includes summary information on the event itself and the
pointers to the files containing the full event. Most components of the
EventIndex system are implemented using BigData open-source tools. This paper
describes the architectural choices and their evolution in time, as well as the
past, current and foreseen future implementations of all EventIndex components.Comment: 21 page
Observation of associated near-side and away-side long-range correlations in √sNN=5.02 TeV proton-lead collisions with the ATLAS detector
Two-particle correlations in relative azimuthal angle (Δϕ) and pseudorapidity (Δη) are measured in √sNN=5.02 TeV p+Pb collisions using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurements are performed using approximately 1 μb-1 of data as a function of transverse momentum (pT) and the transverse energy (ΣETPb) summed over 3.1<η<4.9 in the direction of the Pb beam. The correlation function, constructed from charged particles, exhibits a long-range (2<|Δη|<5) “near-side” (Δϕ∼0) correlation that grows rapidly with increasing ΣETPb. A long-range “away-side” (Δϕ∼π) correlation, obtained by subtracting the expected contributions from recoiling dijets and other sources estimated using events with small ΣETPb, is found to match the near-side correlation in magnitude, shape (in Δη and Δϕ) and ΣETPb dependence. The resultant Δϕ correlation is approximately symmetric about π/2, and is consistent with a dominant cos2Δϕ modulation for all ΣETPb ranges and particle pT
Search for the neutral Higgs bosons of the minimal supersymmetric standard model in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector
A search for neutral Higgs bosons of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) is reported. The analysis is based on a sample of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The data were recorded in 2011 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb-1 to 4.8 fb-1. Higgs boson decays into oppositely-charged muon or τ lepton pairs are considered for final states requiring either the presence or absence of b-jets. No statistically significant excess over the expected background is observed and exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level are derived. The exclusion limits are for the production cross-section of a generic neutral Higgs boson, φ, as a function of the Higgs boson mass and for h/A/H production in the MSSM as a function of the parameters mA and tan β in the mhmax scenario for mA in the range of 90GeV to 500 GeV.
