Evidence for Adiabatic Magnetization of cold Dy_N Clusters
Magnetic properties of Dy_N clusters in a molecular beam generated with a
liquid helium cooled nozzle are investigated by Stern-Gerlach experiments. The
cluster magnetizations \mu_z are measured as a function of magnetic field (B =
0 - 1.6T) and cluster size (16 < N < 56). The most important observation is the
saturation of the magnetization \mu_z(B) at large field strengths. The
magnetization approaches saturation following the power law |\mu_z-\mu_0|
proportional to 1/\sqrt{B}, where \mu_0 denotes the magnetic moment. This gives
evidence for adiabatic magnetization.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Electronic Collective Modes and Superconductivity in Layered Conductors
A distinctive feature of layered conductors is the presence of low-energy
electronic collective modes of the conduction electrons. This affects the
dynamic screening properties of the Coulomb interaction in a layered material.
We study the consequences of the existence of these collective modes for
superconductivity. General equations for the superconducting order parameter
are derived within the strong-coupling phonon-plasmon scheme that account for
the screened Coulomb interaction. Specifically, we calculate the
superconducting critical temperature Tc taking into account the full
temperature, frequency and wave-vector dependence of the dielectric function.
We show that low-energy plasmons may contribute constructively to
superconductivity. Three classes of layered superconductors are discussed
within our model: metal-intercalated halide nitrides, layered organic materials
and high-Tc oxides. In particular, we demonstrate that the plasmon contribution
(electronic mechanism) is dominant in the first class of layered materials. The
theory shows that the description of so-called ``quasi-two-dimensional
superconductors'' cannot be reduced to a purely 2D model, as commonly assumed.
While the transport properties are strongly anisotropic, it remains essential
to take into account the screened interlayer Coulomb interaction to describe

Nuclear Structure Functions in the Large x Large Q^2 Kinematic Region in Neutrino Deep Inelastic Scattering
Data from the CCFR E770 Neutrino Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) experiment
at Fermilab contain events with large Bjorken x (x>0.7) and high momentum
transfer (Q^2>50 (GeV/c)^2). A comparison of the data with a model based on no
nuclear effects at large x, shows a significant excess of events in the data.
Addition of Fermi gas motion of the nucleons in the nucleus to the model does
not explain the excess. Adding a higher momentum tail due to the formation of
``quasi-deuterons'' makes some improvement. An exponentially falling F_2
\propto e^-s(x-x_0) at large x, predicted by ``multi-quark clusters'' and
``few-nucleon correlations'', can describe the data. A value of s=8.3 \pm
0.7(stat.)\pm 0.7(sys.) yields the best agreement with the data.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. Sibmitted to PR
Quasars and their host galaxies
This review attempts to describe developments in the fields of quasar and
quasar host galaxies in the past five. In this time period, the Sloan and 2dF
quasar surveys have added several tens of thousands of quasars, with Sloan
quasars being found to z>6. Obscured, or partially obscured quasars have begun
to be found in significant numbers. Black hole mass estimates for quasars, and
our confidence in them, have improved significantly, allowing a start on
relating quasar properties such as radio jet power to fundamental parameters of
the quasar such as black hole mass and accretion rate. Quasar host galaxy
studies have allowed us to find and characterize the host galaxies of quasars
to z>2. Despite these developments, many questions remain unresolved, in
particular the origin of the close relationship between black hole mass and
galaxy bulge mass/velocity dispersion seen in local galaxies.Comment: Review article, to appear in Astrophysics Update
The Kuiper Belt and Other Debris Disks
We discuss the current knowledge of the Solar system, focusing on bodies in
the outer regions, on the information they provide concerning Solar system
formation, and on the possible relationships that may exist between our system
and the debris disks of other stars. Beyond the domains of the Terrestrial and
giant planets, the comets in the Kuiper belt and the Oort cloud preserve some
of our most pristine materials. The Kuiper belt, in particular, is a
collisional dust source and a scientific bridge to the dusty "debris disks"
observed around many nearby main-sequence stars. Study of the Solar system
provides a level of detail that we cannot discern in the distant disks while

Near-Infrared Spectral Monitoring of Triton with IRTF/SpeX II: Spatial Distribution and Evolution of Ices
This report arises from an ongoing program to monitor Neptune's largest moon
Triton spectroscopically in the 0.8 to 2.4 micron range using IRTF/SpeX. Our
objective is to search for changes on Triton's surface as witnessed by changes
in the infrared absorption bands of its surface ices N2, CH4, H2O, CO, and CO2.
We have recorded infrared spectra of Triton on 53 nights over the ten
apparitions from 2000 through 2009. The data generally confirm our previously
reported diurnal spectral variations of the ice absorption bands (Grundy &
Young 2004). Nitrogen ice shows a large amplitude variation, with much stronger
absorption on Triton's Neptune-facing hemisphere. We present evidence for
seasonal evolution of Triton's N2 ice: the 2.15 micron absorption band appears
to be diminishing, especially on the Neptune-facing hemisphere. Although it is
mostly dissolved in N2 ice, Triton's CH4 ice shows a very different
longitudinal variation from the N2 ice, challenging assumptions of how the two
ices behave. Unlike Triton's CH4 ice, the CO ice does exhibit longitudinal
variation very similar to the N2 ice, implying that CO and N2 condense and
sublimate together, maintaining a consistent mixing ratio. Absorptions by H2O
and CO2 ices show negligible variation as Triton rotates, implying very uniform
and/or high latitude spatial distributions for those two non-volatile ices.Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures, 5 tables, to appear in Icaru
An Integrated TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource to Drive High-Quality Survival Outcome Analytics
For a decade, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) program collected clinicopathologic annotation data along with multi-platform molecular profiles of more than 11,000 human tumors across 33 different cancer types. TCGA clinical data contain key features representing the democratized nature of the data collection process. To ensure proper use of this large clinical dataset associated with genomic features, we developed a standardized dataset named the TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource (TCGA-CDR), which includes four major clinical outcome endpoints. In addition to detailing major challenges and statistical limitations encountered during the effort of integrating the acquired clinical data, we present a summary that includes endpoint usage recommendations for each cancer type. These TCGA-CDR findings appear to be consistent with cancer genomics studies independent of the TCGA effort and provide opportunities for investigating cancer biology using clinical correlates at an unprecedented scale. Analysis of clinicopathologic annotations for over 11,000 cancer patients in the TCGA program leads to the generation of TCGA Clinical Data Resource, which provides recommendations of clinical outcome endpoint usage for 33 cancer types
Planck 2015 results. XXVII. The Second Planck Catalogue of Sunyaev-Zeldovich Sources
We present the all-sky Planck catalogue of Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) sources detected from the 29 month full-mission data. The catalogue (PSZ2) is the largest SZ-selected sample of galaxy clusters yet produced and the deepest all-sky catalogue of galaxy clusters. It contains 1653 detections, of which 1203 are confirmed clusters with identified counterparts in external data-sets, and is the first SZ-selected cluster survey containing > confirmed clusters. We present a detailed analysis of the survey selection function in terms of its completeness and statistical reliability, placing a lower limit of 83% on the purity. Using simulations, we find that the Y5R500 estimates are robust to pressure-profile variation and beam systematics, but accurate conversion to Y500 requires. the use of prior information on the cluster extent. We describe the multi-wavelength search for counterparts in ancillary data, which makes use of radio, microwave, infra-red, optical and X-ray data-sets, and which places emphasis on the robustness of the counterpart match. We discuss the physical properties of the new sample and identify a population of low-redshift X-ray under- luminous clusters revealed by SZ selection. These objects appear in optical and SZ surveys with consistent properties for their mass, but are almost absent from ROSAT X-ray selected samples
Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
