Particle identification studies with a full-size 4-GEM prototype for the ALICE TPC upgrade
A large Time Projection Chamber is the main device for tracking and
charged-particle identification in the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC. After
the second long shutdown in 2019/20, the LHC will deliver Pb beams colliding at
an interaction rate of about 50 kHz, which is about a factor of 50 above the
present readout rate of the TPC. This will result in a significant improvement
on the sensitivity to rare probes that are considered key observables to
characterize the QCD matter created in such collisions. In order to make full
use of this luminosity, the currently used gated Multi-Wire Proportional
Chambers will be replaced. The upgrade relies on continuously operated readout
detectors employing Gas Electron Multiplier technology to retain the
performance in terms of particle identification via the measurement of the
specific energy loss by ionization d/d. A full-size readout chamber
prototype was assembled in 2014 featuring a stack of four GEM foils as an
amplification stage. The performance of the prototype was evaluated in a test
beam campaign at the CERN PS. The d/d resolution complies with both the
performance of the currently operated MWPC-based readout chambers and the
challenging requirements of the ALICE TPC upgrade program. Detailed simulations
of the readout system are able to reproduce the data.Comment: Submitted to NIM
Enhanced production of multi-strange hadrons in high-multiplicity proton-proton collisions
At sufficiently high temperature and energy density, nuclear matter undergoes a transition to a phase in which quarks and gluons are not confined: the quark-gluon plasma (QGP)(1). Such an exotic state of strongly interacting quantum chromodynamics matter is produced in the laboratory in heavy nuclei high-energy collisions, where an enhanced production of strange hadrons is observed(2-6). Strangeness enhancement, originally proposed as a signature of QGP formation in nuclear collisions(7), is more pronounced for multi-strange baryons. Several effects typical of heavy-ion phenomenology have been observed in high-multiplicity proton-proton (pp) collisions(8,9), but the enhanced production of multi-strange particles has not been reported so far. Here we present the first observation of strangeness enhancement in high-multiplicity proton-proton collisions. We find that the integrated yields of strange and multi-strange particles, relative to pions, increases significantly with the event charged-particle multiplicity. The measurements are in remarkable agreement with the p-Pb collision results(10,11), indicating that the phenomenon is related to the final system created in the collision. In high-multiplicity events strangeness production reaches values similar to those observed in Pb-Pb collisions, where a QGP is formed.Peer reviewe
Inclusive J/ψ production at forward and backward rapidity in p-Pb collisions at √sNN=8.16 TeV
Inclusive J/psi production is studied in p-Pb interactions at a centre-of-mass
energy per nucleon-nucleon collision sqrt(s_NN) = 8.16TeV, using the ALICE detector at the
CERN LHC. The J/psi meson is reconstructed, via its decay to a muon pair, in the centre-of-mass
rapidity intervals 2.03 < ycms < 3.53 and -4.46 < ycms < -2.96, where positive
and negative ycms refer to the p-going and Pb-going direction, respectively. The transverse
momentum coverage is pT < 20 GeV/c. In this paper, ycms- and pT-differential cross
sections for inclusive J/psi production are presented, and the corresponding nuclear modification
factors RpPb are shown. Forward results show a suppression of the J/psi yield with
respect to pp collisions, concentrated in the region pT < 5 GeV/c. At backward rapidity
no significant suppression is observed. The results are compared to previous measurements
by ALICE in p-Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 5.02TeV and to theoretical calculations. Finally,
the ratios RFB between forward- and backward-ycms RpPb values are shown and discussed
Constraints on jet quenching in p-Pb collisions at root s(NN)=5.02 TeV measured by the event-activity dependence of semi-inclusive hadron-jet distributions
CNPQ - CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICOFINEP - FINANCIADORA DE ESTUDOS E PROJETOSFAPESP - FUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULOThe ALICE Collaboration reports the measurement of semi-inclusive distributions of charged-particle jets recoiling from a high-transverse momentum trigger hadron in p-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 5.02TeV. Jets are reconstructed from charged-particle tracks using the anti-k(T) algorithm with resolution parameter R = 0.2 and 0.4. A data-driven statistical approach is used to correct the uncorrelated background jet yield. Recoil jet distributions are reported for jet transverse momentum 15 < p(T,jet)(ch) < 50 GeV/c and are compared in various intervals of p-Pb event activity, based on charged-particle multiplicity and zero-degree neutral energy in the forward (Pb-going) direction. The semi-inclusive observable is self-normalized and such comparisons do not require the interpretation of p-Pb event activity in terms of collision geometry, in contrast to inclusive jet observables. These measurements provide new constraints on the magnitude of jet quenching in small systems at the LHC. In p-Pb collisions with high event activity, the average medium-induced out-of-cone energy transport for jets with R = 0.4 and 15 < p(T,jet)(ch) < 50 GeV/c is measured to be less than 0.4 GeV/c at 90% confidence, which is over an order of magnitude smaller than a similar measurement for central Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV. Comparison is made to theoretical calculations of jet quenching in small systems, and to inclusive jet measurements in p-Pb collisions selected by event activity at the LHC and in d-Au collisions at RHIC.78395113CNPQ - CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICOFINEP - FINANCIADORA DE ESTUDOS E PROJETOSFAPESP - FUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULOCNPQ - CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICOFINEP - FINANCIADORA DE ESTUDOS E PROJETOSFAPESP - FUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULOSem informaçãoSem informaçãoSem informaçãoAgências de fomento estrangeiras apoiaram essa pesquisa, mais informações acesse artig
Energy dependence and fluctuations of anisotropic flow in Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN=5.02 and 2.76 TeV
Measurements of anisotropic flow coefficients with two- and multi-particle cumulants
for inclusive charged particles in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 5.02 and 2.76TeV
are reported in the pseudorapidity range |eta|< 0.8 and transverse momentum 0.2 < pT <
50 GeV/c. The full data sample collected by the ALICE detector in 2015 (2010), corresponding
to an integrated luminosity of 12.7 (2.0) ub^-1 in the centrality range 0-80%,
is analysed. Flow coefficients up to the sixth flow harmonic (v6) are reported and a detailed
comparison among results at the two energies is carried out. The pT dependence
of anisotropic flow coefficients and its evolution with respect to centrality and harmonic
number n are investigated. An approximate power-law scaling of the form vn(pT) ~ pT^(n/3)
is observed for all flow harmonics at low pT (0.2 < pT < 3 GeV/c). At the same time, the
ratios vn/vm^(n/m) are observed to be essentially independent of pT for most centralities up to
about pT = 10 GeV/c. Analysing the differences among higher-order cumulants of elliptic flow (v2),
which have different sensitivities to flow fluctuations, a measurement of the standardised
skewness of the event-by-event v2 distribution P(v2) is reported and constraints
on its higher moments are provided. The Elliptic Power distribution is used to parametrise
P(v2), extracting its parameters from fits to cumulants. The measurements are compared
to different model predictions in order to discriminate among initial-state models and to
constrain the temperature dependence of the shear viscosity to entropy-density ratio

Measurement of jet radial profiles in Pb–Pb collisions at 1asNN = 2.76 TeV
The jet radial structure and particle transverse momentum (pT) composition within jets are presented in centrality-selected Pb–Pb collisions at 1asNN = 2.76 TeV. Track-based jets, which are also called charged jets, were reconstructed with a resolution parameter of R = 0.3 at midrapidity |㭼h jet| < 0.6 for transverse momenta pT, ch jet = 30–120 GeV/c. Jet–hadron correlations in relative azimuth and pseudorapidity space (\u3c6,\u3b7) are measured to study the distribution of the associated particles around the jet axis for different pT,assoc-ranges between 1 and 20 GeV/c. The data in Pb–Pb collisions are compared to reference distributions for pp collisions, obtained using embedded PYTHIA simulations. The number of high-pT associate particles (4 < pT,assoc < 20 GeV/c) in Pb–Pb collisions is found to be suppressed compared to the reference by 30 to 10%, depending on centrality. The radial particle distribution relative to the jet axis shows a moderate modification in Pb–Pb collisions with respect to PYTHIA. High-pT associate particles are slightly more collimated in Pb–Pb collisions compared to the reference, while low-pT associate particles tend to be broadened. The results, which are presented for the first time down to pT, ch jet = 30 GeV/c in Pb–Pb collisions, are compatible with both previous jet–hadron-related measurements from the CMS Collaboration and jet shape measurements from the ALICE Collaboration at higher pT, and add further support for the established picture of in-medium parton energy loss
Search for collectivity with azimuthal J/psi-hadron correlations in high multiplicity p-Pb collisions at ,root s(NN)=5.02 and 8.16 TeV
We present a measurement of azimuthal correlations between inclusive J/psi and charged hadrons in p-Pb collisions recorded with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC. The J/psi are reconstructed at forward (p-going, 2.03 <y <3.53) and backward (Pb-going, -4.46 <y <-2.96) rapidity via their mu(+)mu(-) decay channel, while the charged hadrons are reconstructed at mid-rapidity (vertical bar eta vertical bar <1.8). The correlations are expressed in terms of associated charged-hadron yields per W . trigger. A rapidity gap of at least 1.5 units is required between the trigger J/psi and the associated charged hadrons. Possible correlations due to collective effects are assessed by subtracting the associated per-trigger yields in the low-multiplicity collisions from those in the high-multiplicity collisions. After the subtraction, we observe a strong indication of remaining symmetric structures at Delta phi approximate to 0 and Delta phi approximate to pi), similar to those previously found in two-particle correlations at middle and forward rapidity. The corresponding second-order Fourier coefficient (v(2) ) in the transverse momentum interval between 3 and 6 GeV/c is found to be positive with a significance of about 5 sigma. The obtained results are similar to the J/psi v(2) coefficients measured in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV, suggesting a common mechanism at the origin of the J/psi v(2) . Insight into particle production mechanisms via angular correlations of identified particles in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV
Sem informaçãoTwo-particle angular correlations were measured in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV for pions, kaons, protons, and lambdas, for all particle/anti-particle combinations in the pair. Data for mesons exhibit an expected peak dominated by effects associated with mini-jets and are well reproduced by general purpose Monte Carlo generators. However, for baryon-baryon and anti-baryon-anti-baryon pairs, where both particles have the same baryon number, a near-side anti-correlation structure is observed instead of a peak. This effect is interpreted in the context of baryon production mechanisms in the fragmentation process. It currently presents a challenge to Monte Carlo models and its origin remains an open question.778117Sem informaçãoSem informaçãoSem informaçãoFunded by SCOAP3
