Visible and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy of fullerenes using femtosecond laser pulses

    Get PDF
Photoelectron spectra are presented for C60 excited with fs pulses of wavelengths 532 and 267 nm. The spectra indicate a quick redistribution of the excitation energy. Excitation of SAMO states is observed with 532 nm excitation, but due to the relatively large photon energy of the 267 nm pulses, these orbitals are not populated for this wavelength

Long-term monitoring of SO2 quiescent degassing from Nyiragongo’s lava lake

The activity of open-vent volcanoes with an active lava-lake, such as Nyiragongo, is characterized by persistent degassing, thus continuous monitoring of the rate, volume and fate of their gas emissions is of great importance to understand their geophysical state and their potential impact. We report results of SO2 emission measurements from Nyiragongo conducted between 2004 and 2012 with a network of ground-based scanning-DOAS (Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy) remote sensors. The mean SO2 emission rate is found to be 13 ± 9 kg s−1, similar to that observed in 1959. Daily emission rate has a distribution close to log-normal and presents large inter-day variability, reflecting the dynamics of percolation of magma batches of heterogeneous size distribution and changes in the effective permeability of the lava lake. The degassed S content is found to be between 1000 and 2000 ppm from these measurements and the reported magma flow rates sustaining the lava lake. The inter-annual trend and plume height statistics indicate stability of a quiescently degassing lava lake during the period of study

Super-atom molecular orbital excited states of fullerenes

    Get PDF
Super-atom molecular orbitals are orbitals that form diffuse hydrogenic excited electronic states of fullerenes with their electron density centred at the centre of the hollow carbon cage and a significant electron density inside the cage. This is a consequence of the high symmetry and hollow structure of the molecules and distinguishes them from typical low-lying molecular Rydberg states. This review summarizes the current experimental and theoretical studies related to these exotic excited electronic states with emphasis on femtosecond photoelectron spectroscopy experiments on gas-phase fullerenes. Non Linear Current Response of a Many-Level Tunneling System: Higher Harmonics Generation

The fully nonlinear response of a many-level tunneling system to a strong alternating field of high frequency ω\omega is studied in terms of the Schwinger-Keldysh nonequilibrium Green functions. The nonlinear time dependent tunneling current I(t)I(t) is calculated exactly and its resonance structure is elucidated. In particular, it is shown that under certain reasonable conditions on the physical parameters, the Fourier component InI_{n} is sharply peaked at n=ΔEωn=\frac {\Delta E} {\hbar \omega}, where ΔE\Delta E is the spacing between two levels. This frequency multiplication results from the highly nonlinear process of nn photon absorption (or emission) by the tunneling system. It is also conjectured that this effect (which so far is studied mainly in the context of nonlinear optics) might be experimentally feasible.Comment: 28 pages, LaTex, 7 figures are available upon request from [email protected], submitted to Phys.Rev.

Supremum of the Airy2 process minus a parabola on a half line

Let \aip(t) be the Airy2_2 process. We show that the random variable [\sup_{t\leq\alpha}\{aip(t)-t^2}+\min{0,\alpha}^2] has the same distribution as the one-point marginal of the Airy21_{2\to1} process at time α\alpha. These marginals form a family of distributions crossing over from the GUE Tracy-Widom distribution FGUE(x)F_{\rm GUE}(x) for the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble of random matrices, to a rescaled version of the GOE Tracy-Widom distribution FGOE(41/3x)F_{\rm GOE}(4^{1/3}x) for the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble. Furthermore, we show that for every α\alpha the distribution has the same right tail decay e(4/3)x3/2e^{-(4/3)x^{3/2}}.Comment: To appear in Journal of Statistical Physic

Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
