    Plasma Wave Observations During Electron Beam Experiments at High Altitudes

    Electron beam experiments on the nearly geosynchronous P78-2 satellite conducted in 1979 resulted in observations of intense radiation near the local electron gyrofrequency. These signals resembled naturally occurring fce waves during the same period. The amplitude of the stimulated waves depended upon beam parameters. During 50-eV beam operations, current levels of 10/xA produced strong emissions. Current levels of 1 /xA and 100/xA did not. These emissions correspond in time to previously reported observations of electron distributions which suggest heating of the local thermal plasma.     Global gene flow releases invasive plants from environmental constraints on genetic diversity

    When plants establish outside their native range, their ability to adapt to the new environment is influenced by both demography and dispersal. However, the relative importance of these two factors is poorly understood. To quantify the influence of demography and dispersal on patterns of genetic diversity underlying adaptation, we used data from a globally distributed demographic research network comprising 35 native and 18 nonnative populations of Plantago lanceolata. Species-specific simulation experiments showed that dispersal would dilute demographic influences on genetic diversity at local scales. Populations in the native European range had strong spatial genetic structure associated with geographic distance and precipitation seasonality. In contrast, nonnative populations had weaker spatial genetic structure that was not associated with environmental gradients but with higher within-population genetic diversity. Our findings show that dispersal caused by repeated, long-distance, human-mediated introductions has allowed invasive plant populations to overcome environmental constraints on genetic diversity, even without strong demographic changes. The impact of invasive plants may, therefore, increase with repeated introductions, highlighting the need to constrain future introductions of species even if they already exist in an area

    Mutation update for the SATB2 gene

    SATB2-associated syndrome (SAS) is an autosomal dominant neurodevelopmental disorder caused by alterations in the SATB2 gene. Here we present a review of published pathogenic variants in the SATB2 gene to date and report 38 novel alterations found in 57 additional previously unreported individuals. Overall, we present a compilation of 120 unique variants identified in 155 unrelated families ranging from single nucleotide coding variants to genomic rearrangements distributed throughout the entire coding region of SATB2. Single nucleotide variants predicted to result in the occurrence of a premature stop codon were the most commonly seen (51/120=42.5%) followed by missense variants (31/120=25.8%). We review the rather limited functional characterization of pathogenic variants and discuss current understanding of the consequences of the different molecular alterations. We present an expansive phenotypic review along with novel genotype-phenotype correlations. Lastly, we discuss current knowledge on animal models and present future prospects. This review should help provide better guidance for the care of individuals diagnosed with SAS

    Identification of common genetic risk variants for autism spectrum disorder

    Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a highly heritable and heterogeneous group of neurodevelopmental phenotypes diagnosed in more than 1% of children. Common genetic variants contribute substantially to ASD susceptibility, but to date no individual variants have been robustly associated with ASD. With a marked sample-size increase from a unique Danish population resource, we report a genome-wide association meta-analysis of 18,381 individuals with ASD and 27,969 controls that identified five genome-wide-significant loci. Leveraging GWAS results from three phenotypes with significantly overlapping genetic architectures (schizophrenia, major depression, and educational attainment), we identified seven additional loci shared with other traits at equally strict significance levels. Dissecting the polygenic architecture, we found both quantitative and qualitative polygenic heterogeneity across ASD subtypes. These results highlight biological insights, particularly relating to neuronal function and corticogenesis, and establish that GWAS performed at scale will be much more productive in the near term in ASD.Peer reviewe

    Plasma wave observations during ion gun experiments

    The article of record as published may be found at https://doi.org/10.1029/JA095iA06p07759Experiments in charge control on the AF/NASA P78-2 (SCATHA) satellite were conducted with a plasma/ion source in the inner magnetosphere. These experiments were monitored with plasma wave instruments capable of high temporal and frequency resolution in the 0-6 kHz frequency range. Ion gun experiments revealed two distinct classes of behavior. Nonneutralized ion beam operation at 1 mA, 1 kV resulted in arcing signatures (spiky in time, broad frequency range), coincident with induced satellite potentials of {minus}600 to {minus}900 V. This signature disappeared with the accelerating voltage was switched off or the beam was neutralized (at which time the satellite body approached potentials of a few volts). The signal is attributed to arcing between differentially charged surfaces. An additional feature was noted in the 100-kHz channel of the wave receiver. During emission of dense, low-energy plasma, a signal is generated which may be at the upper hybrid, or plasma frequency for the local plasma

    Using the RP4:mini-Mu in vivo cloning technique, van Gijsegem et al. (1985) isolated several pel and cel genes of Erwinia chrysanthemi (Ech) B374 strain. We have localized these genes on the Ech chromosome by co-transfer mapping of Mud11734 insertion mutants and refined the map by co-transposition analysis.
