Coherent charge transport through molecular wires: influence of strong Coulomb repulsion
We derive a master equation for the electron transport through molecular
wires in the limit of strong Coulomb repulsion. This approach is applied to two
typical situations: First, we study transport through an open conduction
channel for which we find that the current exhibits an ohmic-like behaviour.
Second, we explore the transport properties of a bridged molecular wire, where
the current decays exponentially as a function of the wire length. For both
situations, we discuss the differences to the case of non-interacting
electrons.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, elsart style, accepted at Chem Phy
Selection efficiency in Brachiaria hybrids using a posteriori blocking.
This paper compares the efficiency of Brachiaria hybrid clone selection by either traditional analysis or a posteriori blocking, to adequately consider the effect oflower competition in the border rows ofthe experimental plots (border effect). Results demonstrated that a posteriori blocking improved selection and the reliability ofthe genotypic evaluation. Of the ten best clones. four did not coincide in the two approaches. The ranking was altered as well, which demonstrated that the indication of the five best clones. selected to proceed to pasture trials based on the traditional evaluation, was misleading. This paper confirms the usefulness of a posteriori blocking. Furthermore, the results revealed lhe need to impose more effective competition on plants in the border rows to avoid erroneous selection when conducting evaluations for agronomic performance in Brachiaria trials
Core-collapse and Type Ia supernovae with the SKA
Core-collapse SNe (CCSNe): Systematic searches of radio emission from CCSNe
are still lacking, and only targeted searches of radio emission from just some
of the optically discovered CCSNe in the local universe have been carried out.
Optical searches miss a significant fraction of CCSNe due to dust obscuration;
CCSN radio searches are thus more promising for yielding the complete,
unobscured star-formation rates in the local universe. The SKA yields the
possibility to piggyback for free in this area of research by carrying out
commensal, wide-field, blind transient survey observations. SKA1-SUR should be
able to discover several hundreds of CCSNe in just one year, compared to about
a dozen CCSNe that the VLASS would be able to detect in one year, at most. SKA,
with an expected sensitivity ten times that of SKA1, is expected to detect
CCSNe in the local Universe by the thousands. Therefore, commensal SKA
observations could easily result in an essentially complete census of all CCSNe
in the local universe, thus yielding an accurate determination of the
volumetric CCSN rate. Type Ia SNe: We advocate for the use of the SKA to search
for the putative prompt (~first few days after the explosion) radio emission of
any nearby type Ia SN, via target-of-opportunity observations. The huge
improvement in sensitivity of the SKA with respect to its predecessors will
allow to unambiguously discern which progenitor scenario (single-degenerate vs.
double-degenerate) applies to them.Comment: Proceedings of Science: Advancing Astrophysics with the Square

BlackCAT: A catalogue of stellar-mass black holes in X-ray transients
During the last ~50 years, the population of black hole candidates in X-ray
binaries has increased considerably with 59 Galactic objects detected in
transient low-mass X-ray binaries, plus a few in persistent systems (including
~5 extragalactic binaries). We collect near-infrared, optical and X-ray
information spread over hundreds of references in order to study the population
of black holes in X-ray transients as a whole. We present the most updated
catalogue of black hole transients, which contains X-ray, optical and
near-infrared observations together with their astrometric and dynamical
properties. It provides new useful information in both statistical and
observational parameters providing a thorough and complete overview of the
black hole population in the Milky Way. Analysing the distances and spatial
distribution of the observed systems, we estimate a total population of ~1300
Galactic black hole transients. This means that we have already discovered less
than ~5% of the total Galactic distribution. The complete version of this
catalogue will be continuously updated online and in the Virtual Observatory,
including finding charts and data in other wavelengths.Comment: http://www.astro.puc.cl/BlackCAT - Accepted for publication in

The star forming region Monoceros R2 as a gamma-ray source
After the release of the gamma-ray source catalog produced by the Fermi satellite during its first two years of operation, a significant fraction of sources still remain unassociated at lower energies. In addition to well-known high-energy emitters (pulsars, blazars, supernova remnants, etc.), theoretical expectations predict new classes of gamma-ray sources. In particular, gamma-ray emission could be associated with some of the early phases of stellar evolution, but this interesting possibility is still poorly understood. Aims: The aim of this paper is to assess the possibility of the Fermi gamma-ray source 2FGL J0607.5-0618c being associated with the massive star forming region Monoceros R2. Methods: A multi-wavelength analysis of the Monoceros R2 region is carried out using archival data at radio, infrared, X-ray, and gamma-ray wavelengths. The resulting observational properties are used to estimate the physical parameters needed to test the different physical scenarios. Results: We confirm the 2FGL J0607.5-0618c detection with improved confidence over the Fermi two-year catalog. We find that a combined effect of the multiple young stellar objects in Monoceros R2 is a viable picture for the nature of the source
Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor activation regulates cocaine actions and dopamine homeostasis in the lateral septum by decreasing arachidonic acid levels
Agonism of the glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor (GLP-1R) has been effective at treating aspects of addictive behavior for a number of abused substances, including cocaine. However, the molecular mechanisms and brain circuits underlying the therapeutic effects of GLP-1R signaling on cocaine actions remain elusive. Recent evidence has revealed that endogenous signaling at the GLP-1R within the forebrain lateral septum (LS) acts to reduce cocaine-induced locomotion and cocaine conditioned place preference, both considered dopamine (DA)-associated behaviors. DA terminals project from the ventral tegmental area to the LS and express the DA transporter (DAT). Cocaine acts by altering DA bioavailability by targeting the DAT. Therefore, GLP-1R signaling might exert effects on DAT to account for its regulation of cocaine-induced behaviors. We show that the GLP-1R is highly expressed within the LS. GLP-1, in LS slices, significantly enhances DAT surface expression and DAT function. Exenatide (Ex-4), a long-lasting synthetic analog of GLP-1 abolished cocaine-induced elevation of DA. Interestingly, acute administration of Ex-4 reduces septal expression of the retrograde messenger 2-arachidonylglycerol (2-AG), as well as a product of its presynaptic degradation, arachidonic acid (AA). Notably, AA reduces septal DAT function pointing to AA as a novel regulator of central DA homeostasis. We further show that AA oxidation product γ-ketoaldehyde (γ-KA) forms adducts with the DAT and reduces DAT plasma membrane expression and function. These results support a mechanism in which postsynaptic septal GLP-1R activation regulates 2-AG levels to alter presynaptic DA homeostasis and cocaine actions through AA
