Variation of discrete spectra for non-selfadjoint perturbations of selfadjoint operators
Let B=A+K where A is a bounded selfadjoint operator and K is an element of
the von Neumann-Schatten ideal S_p with p>1. Let {\lambda_n} denote an
enumeration of the discrete spectrum of B. We show that \sum_n
\dist(\lambda_n, \sigma(A))^p is bounded from above by a constant multiple of
|K|_p^p. We also derive a unitary analog of this estimate and apply it to

Bailout Embeddings, Targeting of KAM Orbits, and the Control of Hamiltonian Chaos
We present a novel technique, which we term bailout embedding, that can be
used to target orbits having particular properties out of all orbits in a flow
or map. We explicitly construct a bailout embedding for Hamiltonian systems so
as to target KAM orbits. We show how the bailout dynamics is able to lock onto
extremely small KAM islands in an ergodic sea.Comment: 3 figures, 9 subpanel
HOPX functions as a tumour suppressor in head and neck cancer.
Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is generalized term that encompasses a diverse group of cancers that includes tumours of the oral cavity (OSCC), oropharynx (OPSCC) and nasopharynx (NPC). Genetic alterations that are common to all HNSCC types are likely to be important for squamous carcinogenesis. In this study, we have investigated the role of the homeodomain-only homeobox gene, HOPX, in the pathogenesis of HNSCC. We show that HOPX mRNA levels are reduced in OSCC and NPC cell lines and tissues and there is a general reduction of HOPX protein expression in these tumours and OPSCCs. HOPX promoter methylation was observed in a subset of HNSCCs and was associated with a worse overall survival in HPV negative tumours. RNAseq analysis of OSCC cells transfected with HOPX revealed a widespread deregulation of the transcription of genes related to epithelial homeostasis and ectopic over-expression of HOPX in OSCC and NPC cells inhibited cell proliferation, plating efficiency and migration, and enhanced sensitivity to UVA-induced apoptosis. Our results demonstrate that HOPX functions as a tumour suppressor in HNSCC and suggest a central role for HOPX in suppressing epithelial carcinogenesis
Approach to ergodicity in quantum wave functions
According to theorems of Shnirelman and followers, in the semiclassical limit
the quantum wavefunctions of classically ergodic systems tend to the
microcanonical density on the energy shell. We here develop a semiclassical
theory that relates the rate of approach to the decay of certain classical
fluctuations. For uniformly hyperbolic systems we find that the variance of the
quantum matrix elements is proportional to the variance of the integral of the
associated classical operator over trajectory segments of length , and
inversely proportional to , where is the Heisenberg
time, being the mean density of states. Since for these systems the
classical variance increases linearly with , the variance of the matrix
elements decays like . For non-hyperbolic systems, like Hamiltonians
with a mixed phase space and the stadium billiard, our results predict a slower
decay due to sticking in marginally unstable regions. Numerical computations
supporting these conclusions are presented for the bakers map and the hydrogen

Reassessment of the NuTeV determination of the Weinberg angle
In light of the recent discovery of the importance of the isovector EMC
effect for the interpretation of the NuTeV determination of sin^2 theta_W, it
seems timely to reassess the central value and the errors on this fundamental
Standard Model parameter derived from the NuTeV data. We also include earlier
work on charge symmetry violation and the recent limits on a possible asymmetry
between s and \bar{s} quarks. With these corrections we find a revised NuTeV
result of sin^2 theta_W = 0.2232 \pm 0.0013(stat) \pm 0.0024(syst), which is in
excellent agreement with the running of sin^2 theta_W predicted by the Standard

Study of the B^0 Semileptonic Decay Spectrum at the Upsilon(4S) Resonance
We have made a first measurement of the lepton momentum spectrum in a sample
of events enriched in neutral B's through a partial reconstruction of B0 -->
D*- l+ nu. This spectrum, measured with 2.38 fb**-1 of data collected at the
Upsilon(4S) resonance by the CLEO II detector, is compared directly to the
inclusive lepton spectrum from all Upsilon(4S) events in the same data set.
These two spectra are consistent with having the same shape above 1.5 GeV/c.
From the two spectra and two other CLEO measurements, we obtain the B0 and B+
semileptonic branching fractions, b0 and b+, their ratio, and the production
ratio f+-/f00 of B+ and B0 pairs at the Upsilon(4S). We report b+/b0=0.950
(+0.117-0.080) +- 0.091, b0 = (10.78 +- 0.60 +- 0.69)%, and b+ = (10.25 +- 0.57
+- 0.65)%. b+/b0 is equivalent to the ratio of charged to neutral B lifetimes,

Measurement of the Mass Splittings between the States
We present new measurements of photon energies and branching fractions for
the radiative transitions: Upsilon(2S)->gamma+chi_b(J=0,1,2). The masses of the
chi_b states are determined from the measured radiative photon energies. The
ratio of mass splittings between the chi_b substates,
r==(M[J=2]-M[J=1])/(M[J=1]-M[J=0]) with M the chi_b mass, provides information
on the nature of the bbbar confining potential. We find
r(1P)=0.54+/-0.02+/-0.02. This value is in conflict with the previous world
average, but more consistent with the theoretical expectation that r(1P)<r(2P);
i.e., that this mass splittings ratio is smaller for the chi_b(1P) triplet than

Radiative Decay Modes of the Meson
Using data recorded by the CLEO-II detector at CESR we have searched for four
radiative decay modes of the meson: ,
, , and . We
obtain 90% CL upper limits on the branching ratios of these modes of , , and

Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV
A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The
analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC
from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an
integrated luminosity of 4.8 inverse femtobarns. Limits are set on the cross
section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected
exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the
standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The
analysis of the data excludes, at 95% confidence level, the standard model
Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range 128 to 132 GeV. The
largest excess of events above the expected standard model background is
observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV with a local significance
of 3.1 sigma. The global significance of observing an excess with a local
significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-150 GeV is
estimated to be 1.8 sigma. More data are required to ascertain the origin of

Measurement of isolated photon production in pp and PbPb collisions at sqrt(sNN) = 2.76 TeV
Isolated photon production is measured in proton-proton and lead-lead
collisions at nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energies of 2.76 TeV in the
pseudorapidity range |eta|<1.44 and transverse energies ET between 20 and 80
GeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The measured ET spectra are found to be
in good agreement with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions. The
ratio of PbPb to pp isolated photon ET-differential yields, scaled by the
number of incoherent nucleon-nucleon collisions, is consistent with unity for
all PbPb reaction centralities.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters
