A Comparison of Higher-Order Difference Methods in the Solution of Beam-Vibration Problems
Several higher-order difference methods are investi gated and compared for the problem of finding the natural frequencies of the lateral vibration of a beam. All of the methods considered are applicable to either digital or analog computers, although particu lar reference is made to the analog computer. The methods considered in most detail use the same basic central difference approximation, the variations occurring in the method of representing boundary conditions. Three higher-order approaches to the problem of boundary conditions are pre sented. They are 1) the use of one-sided differences of fourth order, 2) the use of symmetry assumptions, and 3) the passive-circuit approach. Each method is shown to have its advantages, the final choice de pending upon the particular requirements of the problem. Observation and Modeling of the Solar-Cycle Variation of the Meridional Flow
We present independent observations of the solar-cycle variation of flows
near the solar surface and at a depth of about 60 Mm, in the latitude range
. We show that the time-varying components of the meridional flow
at these two depths have opposite sign, while the time-varying components of
the zonal flow are in phase. This is in agreement with previous results. We
then investigate whether the observations are consistent with a theoretical
model of solar-cycle dependent meridional circulation based on a flux-transport
dynamo combined with a geostrophic flow caused by increased radiative loss in
the active region belt (the only existing quantitative model). We find that the
model and the data are in qualitative agreement, although the amplitude of the
solar-cycle variation of the meridional flow at 60 Mm is underestimated by the

Simultaneous interval regression for K-nearest neighbor
International audienceIn some regression problems, it may be more reasonable to predict intervals rather than precise values. We are interested in finding intervals which simultaneously for all input instances x ∈X contain a β proportion of the response values. We name this problem simultaneous interval regression. This is similar to simultaneous tolerance intervals for regression with a high confidence level γ ≈ 1 and several authors have already treated this problem for linear regression. Such intervals could be seen as a form of confidence envelop for the prediction variable given any value of predictor variables in their domain. Tolerance intervals and simultaneous tolerance intervals have not yet been treated for the K-nearest neighbor (KNN) regression method. The goal of this paper is to consider the simultaneous interval regression problem for KNN and this is done without the homoscedasticity assumption. In this scope, we propose a new interval regression method based on KNN which takes advantage of tolerance intervals in order to choose, for each instance, the value of the hyper-parameter K which will be a good trade-off between the precision and the uncertainty due to the limited sample size of the neighborhood around each instance. In the experiment part, our proposed interval construction method is compared with a more conventional interval approximation method on six benchmark regression data sets
No Evidence Supporting Flare Driven High-Frequency Global Oscillations
The underlying physics that generates the excitations in the global
low-frequency, < 5.3 mHz, solar acoustic power spectrum is a well known process
that is attributed to solar convection; However, a definitive explanation as to
what causes excitations in the high-frequency regime, > 5.3 mHz, has yet to be
found. Karoff and Kjeldsen (Astrophys. J. 678, 73-76, 2008) concluded that
there is a correlation between solar flares and the global high-frequency solar
acoustic waves. We have used the Global Oscillations Network Group (GONG)
helioseismic data in an attempt to verify Karoff and Kjeldsen (2008) results as
well as compare the post-flare acoustic power spectrum to the pre-flare
acoustic power spectrum for 31 solar flares. Among the 31 flares analyzed, we
observe that a decrease in acoustic power after the solar flare is just as
likely as an increase. Furthermore, while we do observe variations in acoustic
power that are most likely associated with the usual p-modes associated with
solar convection, these variations do not show any significant temporal
association with flares. We find no evidence that consistently supports flare

Comparisons of Supergranule Characteristics During the Solar Minima of Cycles 22/23 and 23/24
Supergranulation is a component of solar convection that manifests itself on
the photosphere as a cellular network of around 35 Mm across, with a turnover
lifetime of 1-2 days. It is strongly linked to the structure of the magnetic
field. The horizontal, divergent flows within supergranule cells carry local
field lines to the cell boundaries, while the rotational properties of
supergranule upflows may contribute to the restoration of the poloidal field as
part of the dynamo mechanism that controls the solar cycle. The solar minimum
at the transition from cycle 23 to 24 was notable for its low level of activity
and its extended length. It is of interest to study whether the convective
phenomena that influences the solar magnetic field during this time differed in
character to periods of previous minima. This study investigates three
characteristics (velocity components, sizes and lifetimes) of solar
supergranulation. Comparisons of these characteristics are made between the
minima of cycles 22/23 and 23/24 using MDI Doppler data from 1996 and 2008,
respectively. It is found that whereas the lifetimes are equal during both
epochs (around 18 h), the sizes are larger in 1996 (35.9 +/- 0.3 Mm) than in
2008 (35.0 +/- 0.3 Mm), while the dominant horizontal velocity flows are weaker
(139 +/- 1 m/s in 1996; 141 +/- 1 m/s in 2008). Although numerical differences
are seen, they are not conclusive proof of the most recent minimum being

Subsurface Meridional Circulation in the Active Belts
Temporal variations of the subsurface meridional flow with the solar cycle
have been reported by several authors. The measurements are typically averaged
over periods of time during which surface magnetic activity existed in the
regions were the velocities are calculated. The present work examines the
possible contamination of these measurements due to the extra velocity fields
associated with active regions plus the uncertainties in the data obtained
where strong magnetic fields are present. We perform a systematic analysis of
more than five years of GONG data and compare meridional flows obtained by
ring-diagram analysis before and after removing the areas of strong magnetic
field. The overall trend of increased amplitude of the meridional flow towards
solar minimum remains after removal of large areas associated with surface
activity. We also find residual circulation toward the active belts that
persist even after the removal of the surface magnetic activity, suggesting the

Optimal design of water treatment processes
Predicted water shortages assign water treatment a leading role in improving water resources management. One of the main challenges associated with the processes remains early stage design of techno-economically optimised purification. This work addresses the current gap by undertaking a whole-system approach of flowsheet synthesis for the production of water at desired purity at minimum overall cost. The optimisation problem was formulated as a mixed-integer non-linear programming model. Two case studies were presented which incorporated the most common commercial technologies and the major pollution indicators, such as chemical oxygen demand, dissolved organic carbon, total suspended solids and total dissolved solids. The results were analysed and compared to existing guidelines in order to examine the applicability of the proposed approach
The Life and Death of Barn Beetles: Faunas from Manure and Stored Hay inside Farm Buildings in Northern Iceland

Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS
We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a
significant distance from their production point into a final state containing
charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is
conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV
and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS
detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles
is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We
observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of
supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the
neutralino lifetime. Limits are presented for different squark and neutralino
