    Search for long-lived particles decaying to leptons with large impact parameter in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

    A search for new long-lived particles decaying to leptons using proton–proton collision data produced by the CERN LHC at s√=13TeV is presented. Events are selected with two leptons (an electron and a muon, two electrons, or two muons) that both have transverse impact parameter values between 0.01 and 10cm and are not required to form a common vertex. Data used for the analysis were collected with the CMS detector in 2016, 2017, and 2018, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 118 (113)fb−1 in the ee channel (eμ and μμ channels). The search is designed to be sensitive to a wide range of models with displaced eμ, ee, and μμ final states. The results constrain several well-motivated models involving new long-lived particles that decay to displaced leptons. For some areas of the available phase space, these are the most stringent constraints to date

    TECHNICAL TRAINING COURSES: A TEACHING METHODOLOGY WITH A PRACTICAL POINT OF VIEW

    Taking into account the new European Higher Education Area (EHEA), the internationalization and cooperation among different universities is an essential aspect to be developed. The new Agrifood Campus of International Excellence (CeiA3) of Andalusia provides the possibility to researchers and professional workers of the Agrifood sector of improving their training by means of different courses of specialization called \u201cTechnical Training Courses\u201d. A group of professors from the University of C\ue1diz, with the cooperation of a foreign professor from the University of Bologna (Italy) developed one of these courses in the academic year 2011/2012, whose title was \u201cAnalysis of oenological products by means of advanced chromatographic techniques\u201d, and it was focused on graduates and professional of the agricultural sector from any part of Andalusia. The length of the course was 35 hours, a part of it was taught in English. The main teaching objectives of this course were on the one hand, to develop lessons from a very practical point of view, avoiding the typical master class and to establish a close report with students. And on the other hand, to improve the training of researchers and professional workers, offering them the possibility of receiving a course in a different place from them, with the most exhaustive and comprehensive scientific material. The mobility of the students was finally achieved because a high percentage of them were external from the University of C\ue1diz. Moreover, as can be derived from a final questionnaire submitted to students, the obtained opinions of the course were excellent and all the students were very satisfied with both the scientific material provided and the practical teaching methodology. However, only with a low number of students (10), this methodology could be successfully carried out. Finally, during the development of the mentioned course, the different professors involved improved as well several adeptness or competences, that are included in the Grade titles and therefore are evaluated during the academic teaching activity.     Lack of agreement for defining 'clinical suspicion of rejection' in liver transplantation: a model to select candidates for liver biopsy.

    The gold standard to diagnose acute cellular rejection (ACR) after liver transplantation (LT) is histological evaluation, but there is no consensus to select patients for liver biopsy. We aimed to evaluate the agreement among clinicians to select candidates for liver biopsy early after LT. From a protocol biopsy population (n = 690), we randomly selected 100 LT patients in whom the biopsy was taken 7-10 days after LT. The clinical information between LT and protocol biopsy was given to nine clinicians from three transplant centres who decided whether a liver biopsy was needed. The agreement among clinicians to select candidates for liver biopsy was poor: \u3ba = 0.06-0.62, being \u3ba < 0.40 in 76% of comparisons. The concordance between indication for liver biopsy and moderate-severe ACR in the protocol biopsy was \u3ba < 0.30 in all cases. A multivariate model based on the product age-by-MELD (OR = 0.81; P = 0.013), delta eosinophils (OR = 1.5; P = 0.002) and mean tacrolimus trough concentrations <6 ng/ml within the prior 4 days (OR = 11.4; P = 0.047) had an AUROC = 0.84 to diagnose moderate-severe histological ACR. In conclusion, the agreement among clinicians to select patients for liver biopsy is very poor. If further validated the proposed model would provide an objective method to select candidates for liver biopsy after LT

    A Global Declaration on Appropriate Use of Antimicrobial Agents across the Surgical Pathway

    This declaration, signed by an interdisciplinary task force of 234 experts from 83 different countries with different backgrounds, highlights the threat posed by antimicrobial resistance and the need for appropriate use of antibiotic agents and antifungal agents in hospitals worldwide especially focusing on surgical infections. As such, it is our intent to raise awareness among healthcare workers and improve antimicrobial prescribing. To facilitate its dissemination, the declaration was translated in different languages

    Suicidal ideation in a European Huntington's disease population

    Previous studies indicate increased prevalences of suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and completed suicide in Huntington's disease (HD) compared with the general population. This study investigates correlates and predictors of suicidal ideation in HD. METHODS: The study cohort consisted of 2106 HD mutation carriers, all participating in the REGISTRY study of the European Huntington's Disease Network. Of the 1937 participants without suicidal ideation at baseline, 945 had one or more follow-up measurements. Participants were assessed for suicidal ideation by the behavioural subscale of the Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS). Correlates of suicidal ideation were analyzed using logistic regression analysis and predictors were analyzed using Cox regression analysis. RESULTS: At baseline, 169 (8.0%) mutation carriers endorsed suicidal ideation. Disease duration (odds ratio [OR]=0.96; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.9-1.0), anxiety (OR=2.14; 95%CI: 1.4-3.3), aggression (OR=2.41; 95%CI: 1.5-3.8), a previous suicide attempt (OR=3.95; 95%CI: 2.4-6.6), and a depressed mood (OR=13.71; 95%CI: 6.7-28.0) were independently correlated to suicidal ideation at baseline. The 4-year cumulative incidence of suicidal ideation was 9.9%. Longitudinally, the presence of a depressed mood (hazard ratio [HR]=2.05; 95%CI: 1.1-4.0) and use of benzodiazepines (HR=2.44; 95%CI: 1.2-5.0) at baseline were independent predictors of incident suicidal ideation, whereas a previous suicide attempt was not predictive. LIMITATIONS: As suicidal ideation was assessed by only one item, and participants were a selection of all HD mutation carriers, the prevalence of suicidal ideation was likely underestimated. CONCLUSIONS: Suicidal ideation in HD frequently occurs. Assessment of suicidal ideation is a priority in mutation carriers with a depressed mood and in those using benzodiazepines

    Observation of Light-by-Light Scattering in Ultraperipheral Pb plus Pb Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

    This letter describes the observation of the light-by-light scattering process, γγγγ\gamma\gamma\rightarrow\gamma\gamma, in Pb+Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 5.02 TeV. The analysis is conducted using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.73 nb1^{-1}, collected in November 2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Light-by-light scattering candidates are selected in events with two photons produced exclusively, each with transverse energy ETγ>3E_{\textrm{T}}^{\gamma} > 3 GeV and pseudorapidity ηγ<2.37|\eta_{\gamma}| < 2.37, diphoton invariant mass above 6 GeV, and small diphoton transverse momentum and acoplanarity. After applying all selection criteria, 59 candidate events are observed for a background expectation of 12 ±\pm 3 events. The observed excess of events over the expected background has a significance of 8.2 standard deviations. The measured fiducial cross section is 78 ±\pm 13 (stat.) ±\pm 7 (syst.) ±\pm 3 (lumi.) nb.Comment: 29 pages in total, author list starting page 13, 2 figures, 0 tables, final version published in PRL.
