    Beyond domain alignment: Revealing the effect of intrinsic magnetic order on electrochemical water splitting

    To reach a long term viable green hydrogen economy, rational design of active oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is critical. An important hurdle in this reaction originates from the fact that the reactants are singlet molecules, whereas the oxygen molecule has a triplet ground state with parallel spin alignment, implying that magnetic order in the catalyst is essential. Accordingly, multiple experimentalists reported a positive effect of external magnetic fields on OER activity of ferromagnetic catalysts. However, it remains a challenge to investigate the influence of the intrinsic magnetic order on catalytic activity. Here, we tuned the intrinsic magnetic order of epitaxial La0.67_{0.67}Sr0.33_{0.33}MnO3_{3} thin film model catalysts from ferro- to paramagnetic by changing the temperature in-situ during water electrolysis. Using this strategy, we show that ferromagnetic ordering below the Curie temperature enhances OER activity. Moreover, we show a slight current density enhancement upon application of an external magnetic field and find that the dependence of magnetic field direction correlates with the magnetic anisotropy in the catalyst film. Our work thus suggests that both the intrinsic magnetic order in La0.67_{0.67}Sr0.33_{0.33}MnO3_{3} films and magnetic domain alignment increase their catalytic activity. We observe no long-range magnetic order at the catalytic surface, implying that the OER enhancement is connected to the magnetic order of the bulk catalyst. Combining the effects found with existing literature, we propose a unifying picture for the spin-polarized enhancement in magnetic oxide catalysts.Comment: The following article will be submitted to Applied Physics Reviews.     A systematic review and meta-analysis of patient education in preventing and reducing the incidence or recurrence of adult diabetes foot ulcers (DFU)

    Background The World Health Organization (WHO) states that diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) are associated with disability, death among patients with diabetes and substantial costs, if not prevented or managed effectively. The aim here is to examine the effectiveness of patient education in preventing and reducing the incidence or recurrence of adult DFU and amputation. Methods A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised clinical trials (RCTs) in adults aged 18+ who have diabetes mellitus (type 1 or type 2) or DFU. CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE, PSYCINFO, Cochrane Library and Evidence-Based Nursing, National Library for Health, Medica and Google Scholar were searched. Only English language studies were considered. Databases were searched from their inception to September 2017. Findings Six RCTs met the inclusion criteria. Only five RCTs reported on the incidence of DFU whilst only two reported on amputation rates. There was no advantage of combining different educational approaches in preventing/reducing DFU, relative risk (RR) of 0.50 (95%CI 0.21, 1.17) (P = 0.11). Two RCTs based on foot care education alone were compared with usual care; the result showed a non-significant effect (P = 0.57) with high heterogeneity of 77%. Analysis based on intensive versus brief educational approach showed a statistically reduced risk of incidence of DFU in the intervention group when compared to the control group; (RR, 0.37, 95%CI 0.14, 1.01) (P = 0.05) with high heterogeneity of 91%.     Promoting reuse behaviour: Challenges and strategies for repeat purchase, low-involvement products

    Reusable products offer reduced environmental impact compared to recycling, but producers mostly focus on strategies such as light-weighting, recyclability and eco-labelling. A reasonable number of innovative reusable products and business models exist for repeat purchase, low-involvement products, but they are largely restricted to niche health-food stores. Therefore, this research primarily attempts to understand consumer attitudes and behaviour towards reuse of household care products (e.g. air fresheners, domestic cleaning products). Focus groups with UK consumers are utilised to examine reusable/refillable spray products and the data are triangulated with global archival data on various refill business models, reusable products and recycling initiatives. The study offers useful guidelines for both producers and policy makers to encourage reusable products. First, we recommend that eco-innovations have a familiar design congruent with well-known brands, to reduce uncertainties for consumers. Second, if the innovation has an unfamiliar design, to mitigate, producers should offer new functional benefits. Third, and most important, producers must place greater emphasis on aesthetic aspects that could evoke product attachment, thus encouraging reuse. Fourth, if reusable products are to become mainstream, ‘well-known brands’ have to promote the transition from one-off sales to a service model built on durable products. Finally, a successful outcome is dependent on government interventions in designing new life cycle policy instruments, in particular de-marketing the current recycling norm and emphasising reusing over recycling

    Does a specialised orthopaedic trauma module utilising high fidelity simulation improve student nurses' perceptions of their competence? A pilot study

    Trauma is the fourth leading cause of death in the western world, and traumatic injuries are recognised as clinically challenging to care for. Orthopaedic trauma care is not standard content in pre-qualifying nursing curriculums, compounded by a dearth in specialised post-qualifying education internationally. As a result, registered nurses may not have the clinical skill set to appropriately manage patients with traumatic conditions. To understand pre-qualifying student nurses' perceptions of their own competence in orthopaedic trauma care and understand if utilisation high fidelity simulation improves confidence, knowledge and application of theory. A small-scale qualitative pilot study utilising purposive sampling, designed to inform the development of a larger longitudinal study. A 5-point likert scale questionnaire with options for qualitative comments was administered after 8 weeks of a specialised module culminating in a high-fidelity simulation and in-depth debrief session. Thematic analysis was conducted. All students found that the module improved their confidence and knowledge in their skills set. The high-fidelity simulation was found to be an effective learning environment to translate theory to practice. Specialised orthopaedic trauma training is effective in improving student nurses' knowledge and perceived competence in trauma care. High fidelity simulation is a valuable teaching tool to develop student's skill sets in complex scenarios and support application of theory to practice.     The National Commission for incorporation of Health Technologies (CONITEC), established in 2011, advises the Ministry of Health in decisions related to the incorporation, exclusion or change of medicines, products and procedures in the Unified Health System (SUS).The study investigated the decision-making process, profile of demands and incorporation of new medicines in the SUS from January/2012 to June/2016, based on data available on the CONITEC website. All submissions were evaluated and characterized by technology and applicant type. The incorporations were analyzed according to the Anatomical-Therapeutic-Chemical classification, International Classification of Disease of the clinical indication and active record in the National Health Surveillance Agency. In the period, 485 submissions were received, 92.2% concerning requests for incorporation and 62.1% for medicines, of which 93 (30.1%) received a favorable recommendation for incorporation. Domestic demands were more successful than externally originated ones. Six unregistered drugs were incorporated. Infectious and parasitic diseases and musculoskeletal diseases constituted the main clinical indications. The recommendation of incorporation occurred mainly based on the additional clinical benefits and low budget impact
