Relativistic nuclear structure effects in quasielastic neutrino scattering

    Get PDF
Charged-current cross sections are calculated for quasielastic neutrino and antineutrino scattering using a relativistic meson-nucleon model. We examine how nuclear-structure effects, such as relativistic random-phase-approximation (RPA) corrections and momentum-dependent nucleon self-energies, influence the extraction of the axial form factor of the nucleon. RPA corrections are important only at low-momentum transfers. In contrast, the momentum dependence of the relativistic self-energies changes appreciably the value of the axial-mass parameter, MAM_A, extracted from dipole fits to the axial form factor. Using Brookhaven's experimental neutrino spectrum we estimate the sensitivity of MA_A to various relativistic nuclear-structure effects.Comment: 26 pages, revtex, 6 postscript figures (available upon request

Charge-conjugation violating neutrino interactions in supernovae

    Get PDF
The well known charge conjugation violating interactions in the Standard Model increase neutrino- and decrease anti-neutrino- nucleon cross sections. This impacts neutrino transport in core collapse supernovae through "recoil" corrections of order the neutrino energy kk over the nucleon mass MM. All k/Mk/M corrections to neutrino transport deep inside a protoneutron star are calculated from angular integrals of the Boltzmann equation. We find these corrections significantly modify neutrino currents at high temperatures. This produces a large mu and tau number for the protoneutron star and can change the ratio of neutrons to protons. In addition, the relative size of neutrino mean free paths changes. At high temperatures, the electron anti-neutrino mean free path becomes {\it longer} than that for mu or tau neutrinos.Comment: 14 pages, 2 included ps figures, subm. to Phys. Rev.

Coordination crosslinking of helical substituted oligoamide nanorods with Cu II

Substituted oligoamides are short sequences of unnatural amino acids. Oligoamides made entirely of amp; 946;3 amino acids yield helical monomers that, if N acylated, assemble into nanorod structures via a supramolecular assembly motif. In this work, coordination crosslinking was used to create complex nanomaterials fromoligoamides WKLWEL KE and WELWEL EE the letters denote the analogous amp; 945; amino acids . Upon Cu II addition, atomic force microscopy and small angle neutron scattering revealedmorphologic changes specific to KE but absent in EE. Vibration spectroscopymeasurements revealed that Cu II can coordinate to the amine moieties of the side chains, without direct effect on the backboneamides. While coordination in excess solvent lead to regular nanostructures, fast drying of the sample yielded oligoamide templated crystallization of CuCl2. The metal coordination crosslinking of supramolecular assemblies as reported here is the first realization of a metallosupramolecular framework structur

Detection of Supernova Neutrinos by Neutrino-Proton Elastic Scattering

    Get PDF
We propose that neutrino-proton elastic scattering, ν+pν+p\nu + p \to \nu + p, can be used for the detection of supernova neutrinos in scintillator detectors. Though the proton recoil kinetic energy spectrum is soft, with Tp2Eν2/MpT_p \simeq 2 E_\nu^2/M_p, and the scintillation light output from slow, heavily ionizing protons is quenched, the yield above a realistic threshold is nearly as large as that from νˉe+pe++n\bar{\nu}_e + p \to e^+ + n. In addition, the measured proton spectrum is related to the incident neutrino spectrum, which solves a long-standing problem of how to separately measure the total energy and temperature of νμ\nu_\mu, ντ\nu_\tau, νˉμ\bar{\nu}_\mu, and νˉτ\bar{\nu}_\tau. The ability to detect this signal would give detectors like KamLAND and Borexino a crucial and unique role in the quest to detect supernova neutrinos.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, revtex

Phase Separation in a ternary DPPC DOPC POPC System with Reducing Hydration

    Get PDF
The maintenance of plasma membrane structure is vital for the viability of cells. Disruption of this structure can lead to cell death. One important example is the macroscopic phase separation observed during dehydration associated with desiccation and freezing, often leading to loss of permeability and cell death. It has previously been shown that the hybrid lipid 1 palmitoyl 2 oleoyl sn glycero 3 phosphocholine POPC can act as a line active component in ternary lipid systems, inhibiting macroscopic phase separation and stabilising membrane microdomains in lipid vesicles [1]. The domain size is found to decrease with increasing POPC concentration until complete mixing is observed. However, no such studies have been carried out at reduced hydration. To examine if this phase separation is unique to vesicles in excess water, we have conducted studies on several binary and ternary model membrane systems at both reduced hydration powder type samples and oriented membrane stacks and in excess water supported lipid bilayers at 0.2 mol fraction POPC, in the range where microdomain stabilisation is reported. Differential scanning calorimetry DSC and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy FTIR are used to map phase transition temperatures, with X ray and neutron scattering providing details of the changes in lipid packing and phase information within these boundaries. Atomic force microscopy AFM is used to image bilayers on a substrate in excess water. In all cases, macroscopic phase separation was observed rather than microdomain formation at this molar ratio. Thus POPC does not stabilise microdomains under these conditions, regardless of the type of model membrane, hydration or temperature. Thus we conclude that the driving force for separation under these conditions overcomes any linactant effects of the hybrid lipi

Isospin breaking corrections to nucleon form factors in the constituent quark model

We examine isospin breaking in the nucleon wave functions due to the udu - d quark mass difference and the Coulomb interaction among the quarks, and their consequences on the nucleon electroweak form factors in a nonrelativistic constituent quark model. The mechanically induced isospin breaking in the nucleon wave functions and electroweak form factors are exactly evaluated in this model. We calculate the electromagnetically induced isospin admixtures by using first-order perturbation theory, including the lowest-lying resonance with nucleon quantum numbers but isospin 3/2. We find a small (1%\leq 1\%), but finite correction to the anomalous magnetic moments of the nucleon stemming almost entirely from the quark mass difference, while the static nucleon axial coupling remains uncorrected. Corrections of the same order of magnitude appear in charge, magnetic, and axial radii of the nucleon. The correction to the charge radius in this model is primarily isoscalar, and may be of some significance for the extraction of the strangeness radius from e.g. elastic forward angle parity violating electron-proton asymmetries, or elastic 4He(e,e){}^4He({\vec e},e') experiments.Comment: 15 pp(22 as preprint), revtex, 3 uuencoded figs at end of this fil

Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Get PDF
Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp. Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Physics Letters B. Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

    Get PDF
This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw > 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables, revised author list, matches European Journal of Physics C versio

Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS

    Get PDF
The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes. This is interpreted as the chi_b(3P) system.Comment: 5 pages plus author list (18 pages total), 2 figures, 1 table, corrected author list, matches final version in Physical Review Letter

Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    Get PDF
We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a significant distance from their production point into a final state containing charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the neutralino lifetime. Limits are presented for different squark and neutralino masses, enabling extension of the limits to a variety of other models.Comment: 8 pages plus author list (20 pages total), 8 figures, 1 table, final version to appear in Physics Letters
