Creating and curating an archive: Bury St Edmunds and its Anglo-Saxon past

    Get PDF
This contribution explores the mechanisms by which the Benedictine foundation of Bury St Edmunds sought to legitimise and preserve their spurious pre-Conquest privileges and holdings throughout the Middle Ages. The archive is extraordinary in terms of the large number of surviving registers and cartularies which contain copies of Anglo-Saxon charters, many of which are wholly or partly in Old English. The essay charts the changing use to which these ancient documents were put in response to threats to the foundation's continued enjoyment of its liberties. The focus throughout the essay is to demonstrate how pragmatic considerations at every stage affects the development of the archive and the ways in which these linguistically challenging texts were presented, re-presented, and represented during the Abbey’s history

Farmers' houses in the Tournai area have remained faithful till the end of last century to a very ancient building logic. They tirelessly repeat the same basic pattern consisting in the erection side by side of three modules representing the primitive « cage » of the wooden construction. The most amazing is that this pattern with all its « archaic » connotations resisted XlXth century's innovations in technology and the living organisation of the home. Asymmetric Vicinal Acylation of Olefins - a New Approach To Enantiomerically Pure Gamma-lactones

Amide 3 derived from N-tosylsarcosine and (2R,5R)-dimethylpyrrolidine was converted into keteniminium salt 4 which readily cycloadded to olefins. Hydrolysis of the adducts yielded cyclobutanones which were regiospecifically oxidized to gamma-lactones 7. High enantioselectivities were observed with 1,2-cis-disubstitued olefins

An Efficient Method for the Vicinal Acylation of Unactivated Olefins Using Keteniminium Salts Derived From Protected Alpha-hydroxyacids Or Alpha-amino-acids

Keteniminium salts derived from O-methylglycolic or N-tosylsarcosine amides cycloadd to olefins to give good yields of the corresponding cyclobutanones which undergo regiospecific Baeyer-Villiger oxidation to form gamma-butyrolactones
