    Throughput Unfairness in Dragonfly Networks under Realistic Traffic Patterns

    Dragonfly networks have a two-level hierarchical arrangement of the network routers, and allow for a competitive cost-performance solution in large systems. Nonminimal adaptive routing is employed to fully exploit the path diversity and increase the performance under adversarial traffic patterns. Throughput unfairness prevents a balanced use of the resources across the network nodes and degrades severely the performance of any application running on an affected node. Previous works have demonstrated the presence of throughput unfairness in Dragonflies under certain adversarial traffic patterns, and proposed different alternatives to effectively combat such effect. In this paper we introduce a new traffic pattern denoted adversarial consecutive (ADVc), which portrays a real use case, and evaluate its impact on network performance and throughput fairness. This traffic pattern is the most adversarial in terms of network fairness. Our evaluations, both with or without transit-over-injection priority, show that global misrouting policies do not properly alleviate this problem. Therefore, explicit fairness mechanisms are required for these networks

    Characterizing the Communication Demands of the Graph500 Benchmark on a Commodity Cluster

    Big Data applications have gained importance over the last few years. Such applications focus on the analysis of huge amounts of unstructured information and present a series of differences with traditional High Performance Computing (HPC) applications. For illustrating such dissimilarities, this paper analyzes the behavior of the most scalable version of the Graph500 benchmark when run on a state-of-the-art commodity cluster facility. Our work shows that this new computation paradigm stresses the interconnection subsystem. In this work, we provide both analytical and empirical characterizations of the Graph500 benchmark, showing that its communication needs bound the achieved performance on a cluster facility. Up to our knowledge, our evaluation is the first to consider the impact of message aggregation on the communication overhead and explore a tradeoff that diminishes benchmark execution time, increasing system performance

    Un sistema para la docencia a distancia en asignaturas con hardware real

    La docencia práctica en laboratorio de asignaturas centradas en el hardware como las del área de Estructura y Organización de Computadores se ha visto severamente afectada por el COVID-19. En este artículo se introduce un nuevo sistema de laboratorio remoto para la realización de sesiones prácticas basadas en Raspberry Pi ejecutando el sistema operativo RISC OS. El sistema gestiona tanto la alimentación de los equipos como la entrada/salida realizada a través de dispositivos periféricos, y permite al alumno visualizar e interaccionar con el escritorio del equipo remoto y con los dispositivos hardware conectados al mismo. Asimismo, el sistema facilita que un alumno y un profesor puedan visualizar el equipo remoto de forma simultánea en tiempo real, lo que facilita la resolución de dudas y la realización de pruebas de evaluación. El sistema combina una lógica de control basada en módulos Arduino y conexiones Ethernet con una interfaz web programada en lenguaje PHP. Con estas especiaciones, se ha desarrollado con éxito una prueba de concepto dotada de dos equipos remotos y dos interfaces de entrada.Los autores agradecen la colaboración de Fernando Vallejo, Carmen Martínez y Cristóbal Camarero.     Contention-based Nonminimal Adaptive Routing in High-radix Networks

    Adaptive routing is an efficient congestion avoidance mechanism for modern Datacenter and HPC networks. Congestion detection traditionally relies on the occupancy of the router queues. However, this approach can hinder performance due to coarse-grain measurements with small buffers, and potential routing oscillations with large buffers. We introduce an alternative mechanism, labelled Contention-Based Adaptive Routing. Our mechanism adapts routing based on an estimation of “network contention”, the simultaneity of traffic flows contending for a network port. Our system employs a set of counters which track the demand for each output port. This exploits path diversity thanks to earlier detection of adversarial traffic patterns, and decouples buffer size and queue occupancy from contention detection. We evaluate our mechanism in a Dragonfly network. Our evaluations show this mechanism achieves optimal latency under uniform traffic and similar to best previous routing mechanisms under adversarial patterns, with immediate adaptation to traffic pattern changes

    RESUMEN: La docencia en Estructura y Organización de Computadores se imparte habitualmente utilizando una arquitectura como referencia, siendo MIPS una de las más usadas. Sin embargo, su baja penetración en el mercado actual tiene un efecto desmotivador en los alumnos. Esto, junto con la mayor relevancia de la arquitectura ARM, nos ha hecho plantearnos considerarla como referencia en nuestros planes de estudios. Con este objetivo, se ha desarrollado un proyecto de innovación docente para rediseñar las materias implicadas. Esta modificación ha implicado cambios en el laboratorio en el que se desarrollan las prácticas, para el que se ha seleccionado Raspberry Pi, una plataforma de bajo coste basada en ARM. Como principal diferencia respecto a otras soluciones, se ha elegido el sistema operativo RISC OS, que permite realizas prácticas de programación en ensamblador y Entrada/Salida en el mismo entorno. Además, se ha desarrollado un depurador en ARM llamado !UCDebug. En este artículo se describen las diferentes etapas del proyecto y los resultados obtenidos. Cabe destacar que, en los dos cursos que lleva implantado, la motivación y asistencia de los alumnos ha aumentado considerablemente y la tasa de éxito ha subido hasta un 13 %.ABSTRACT: Computer Organization and Design is usually instructed using a computer architecture as reference. The MIPS architecture has been traditionally widespread in that regard. However, its current low market share discourages the students. This, coupled with the greater relevance of the ARM architecture, has motivated our switch to the latter as the reference in our degree. With this aim, a redesign of the involved courses has been carried out through an educational innovation project. One of the effects has been a transition to the low-cost ARM Raspberry Pi platform for the computer lab where students perform their practical sessions. As a major difference to the approach followed by other universities, the RISC Operating System has been chosen, allowing to perform both assembly and Input/Output practices within the same environment. Moreover, an ARM debugger called !UCDebug has been developed to alleviate the lack of userfriendly debugging tools. This article describes the stages of the project and the results achieved.     Treatment with tocilizumab or corticosteroids for COVID-19 patients with hyperinflammatory state: a multicentre cohort study (SAM-COVID-19)

    Objectives: The objective of this study was to estimate the association between tocilizumab or corticosteroids and the risk of intubation or death in patients with coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) with a hyperinflammatory state according to clinical and laboratory parameters. Methods: A cohort study was performed in 60 Spanish hospitals including 778 patients with COVID-19 and clinical and laboratory data indicative of a hyperinflammatory state. Treatment was mainly with tocilizumab, an intermediate-high dose of corticosteroids (IHDC), a pulse dose of corticosteroids (PDC), combination therapy, or no treatment. Primary outcome was intubation or death; follow-up was 21 days. Propensity score-adjusted estimations using Cox regression (logistic regression if needed) were calculated. Propensity scores were used as confounders, matching variables and for the inverse probability of treatment weights (IPTWs). Results: In all, 88, 117, 78 and 151 patients treated with tocilizumab, IHDC, PDC, and combination therapy, respectively, were compared with 344 untreated patients. The primary endpoint occurred in 10 (11.4%), 27 (23.1%), 12 (15.4%), 40 (25.6%) and 69 (21.1%), respectively. The IPTW-based hazard ratios (odds ratio for combination therapy) for the primary endpoint were 0.32 (95%CI 0.22-0.47; p < 0.001) for tocilizumab, 0.82 (0.71-1.30; p 0.82) for IHDC, 0.61 (0.43-0.86; p 0.006) for PDC, and 1.17 (0.86-1.58; p 0.30) for combination therapy. Other applications of the propensity score provided similar results, but were not significant for PDC. Tocilizumab was also associated with lower hazard of death alone in IPTW analysis (0.07; 0.02-0.17; p < 0.001).     Mortality and pulmonary complications in patients undergoing surgery with perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection: an international cohort study

    Background: The impact of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) on postoperative recovery needs to be understood to inform clinical decision making during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. This study reports 30-day mortality and pulmonary complication rates in patients with perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection. Methods: This international, multicentre, cohort study at 235 hospitals in 24 countries included all patients undergoing surgery who had SARS-CoV-2 infection confirmed within 7 days before or 30 days after surgery. The primary outcome measure was 30-day postoperative mortality and was assessed in all enrolled patients. The main secondary outcome measure was pulmonary complications, defined as pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, or unexpected postoperative ventilation. Findings: This analysis includes 1128 patients who had surgery between Jan 1 and March 31, 2020, of whom 835 (74·0%) had emergency surgery and 280 (24·8%) had elective surgery. SARS-CoV-2 infection was confirmed preoperatively in 294 (26·1%) patients. 30-day mortality was 23·8% (268 of 1128). Pulmonary complications occurred in 577 (51·2%) of 1128 patients; 30-day mortality in these patients was 38·0% (219 of 577), accounting for 81·7% (219 of 268) of all deaths. In adjusted analyses, 30-day mortality was associated with male sex (odds ratio 1·75 [95% CI 1·28–2·40], p\textless0·0001), age 70 years or older versus younger than 70 years (2·30 [1·65–3·22], p\textless0·0001), American Society of Anesthesiologists grades 3–5 versus grades 1–2 (2·35 [1·57–3·53], p\textless0·0001), malignant versus benign or obstetric diagnosis (1·55 [1·01–2·39], p=0·046), emergency versus elective surgery (1·67 [1·06–2·63], p=0·026), and major versus minor surgery (1·52 [1·01–2·31], p=0·047). Interpretation: Postoperative pulmonary complications occur in half of patients with perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection and are associated with high mortality. Thresholds for surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic should be higher than during normal practice, particularly in men aged 70 years and older. Consideration should be given for postponing non-urgent procedures and promoting non-operative treatment to delay or avoid the need for surgery.     Elective cancer surgery in COVID-19-free surgical pathways during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: An international, multicenter, comparative cohort study

    PURPOSE As cancer surgery restarts after the first COVID-19 wave, health care providers urgently require data to determine where elective surgery is best performed. This study aimed to determine whether COVID-19–free surgical pathways were associated with lower postoperative pulmonary complication rates compared with hospitals with no defined pathway. PATIENTS AND METHODS This international, multicenter cohort study included patients who underwent elective surgery for 10 solid cancer types without preoperative suspicion of SARS-CoV-2. Participating hospitals included patients from local emergence of SARS-CoV-2 until April 19, 2020. At the time of surgery, hospitals were defined as having a COVID-19–free surgical pathway (complete segregation of the operating theater, critical care, and inpatient ward areas) or no defined pathway (incomplete or no segregation, areas shared with patients with COVID-19). The primary outcome was 30-day postoperative pulmonary complications (pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, unexpected ventilation). RESULTS Of 9,171 patients from 447 hospitals in 55 countries, 2,481 were operated on in COVID-19–free surgical pathways. Patients who underwent surgery within COVID-19–free surgical pathways were younger with fewer comorbidities than those in hospitals with no defined pathway but with similar proportions of major surgery. After adjustment, pulmonary complication rates were lower with COVID-19–free surgical pathways (2.2% v 4.9%; adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.62; 95% CI, 0.44 to 0.86). This was consistent in sensitivity analyses for low-risk patients (American Society of Anesthesiologists grade 1/2), propensity score–matched models, and patients with negative SARS-CoV-2 preoperative tests. The postoperative SARS-CoV-2 infection rate was also lower in COVID-19–free surgical pathways (2.1% v 3.6%; aOR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.36 to 0.76). CONCLUSION Within available resources, dedicated COVID-19–free surgical pathways should be established to provide safe elective cancer surgery during current and before future SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks

    First Sagittarius A* Event Horizon Telescope results. II. EHT and multiwavelength observations, data processing, and calibration

    We present Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) 1.3 mm measurements of the radio source located at the position of the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), collected during the 2017 April 5–11 campaign. The observations were carried out with eight facilities at six locations across the globe. Novel calibration methods are employed to account for Sgr A*'s flux variability. The majority of the 1.3 mm emission arises from horizon scales, where intrinsic structural source variability is detected on timescales of minutes to hours. The effects of interstellar scattering on the image and its variability are found to be subdominant to intrinsic source structure. The calibrated visibility amplitudes, particularly the locations of the visibility minima, are broadly consistent with a blurred ring with a diameter of ∼50 μas, as determined in later works in this series. Contemporaneous multiwavelength monitoring of Sgr A* was performed at 22, 43, and 86 GHz and at near-infrared and X-ray wavelengths. Several X-ray flares from Sgr A* are detected by Chandra, one at low significance jointly with Swift on 2017 April 7 and the other at higher significance jointly with NuSTAR on 2017 April 11. The brighter April 11 flare is not observed simultaneously by the EHT but is followed by a significant increase in millimeter flux variability immediately after the X-ray outburst, indicating a likely connection in the emission physics near the event horizon. We compare Sgr A*'s broadband flux during the EHT campaign to its historical spectral energy distribution and find that both the quiescent emission and flare emission are consistent with its long-term behavior.http://iopscience.iop.org/2041-8205Physic
