    The Role of Mesenteric Adipose Tissue in Crohn’s Disease

    Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has become an increasingly frequent chronic health problem in the last few decades, particularly in developing countries. In young adults, one of the most common forms of IBD is Crohn’s disease (CD). CD is a multifactorial genetic disease characterized by a transmural granulomatous inflammation that especially affects the terminal ileum and the colon. As it involves defective inflammatory pathways, the immune adaptive complex, and environmental factors, this disease has periods of remission and recurrence followed by diarrhea, abdominal pain, and malnutrition, which often lead to lumen bowel stenosis associated to multiple fistulas. In addition, the growth of mesenteric adipose tissue (MAT) near the affected intestinal area is a hallmark of CD. Evidence linking the development of mesenteric and intestinal alterations in CD is increasing. The aim of this chapter is to address adipose tissue in general, the morphological and functional differences between its compartments, the main characteristics of MAT in CD, and its possible role in the etiopathology of this immune-mediated disease

    Transcriptional And Molecular Pathways Activated In Mesenteric Adipose Tissue And Intestinal Mucosa Of Crohn's Disease Patients

    Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory disorder, characterized by cytokine imbalance and transcription signaling pathways activation. In addition, the increase of mesenteric adipose tissue (MAT) near the affected intestinal area is a hallmark of CD. Therefore, we evaluated the transcription signaling pathways and cytokines expression in intestinal mucosa and MAT of active CD patients. Ten patients with ileocecal CD and eight with noninflammatory diseases were studied. The biopsies of intestinal mucosa and MAT were snap-frozen and protein expression was determined by immunoblotting. RNA levels were measured by qPCR. The pIkB/IkB ratio and TNF alpha level were significantly higher in intestinal mucosa of CD when compared to controls. However, STAT1 expression was similar between intestinal mucosa of CD and controls. Considering the MAT, the pIkB/IkB ratio was significantly lower and the anti-inflammatory cytokine ILl0 was significantly higher in CD when compared to controls. Finally, the protein content of pSTAT1 was higher in MAT of CD compared to controls. These findings reinforce the predominance of the proinflammatory NF-kB pathway in CD intestinal mucosa.     Avaliação ambiental dos resíduos produzidos pelas empresas metalúrgicas localizadas no perímetro urbano da cidade de Ijuí

    The present work has as its main objective the assessment of the kind and quantity of waste produced by the metallurgic industries in the city of Ijuí. The roll of the 78 metallurgic plants was drawn from the ROLL OF CONTRIBUTORS/96 provided by the BUREAU OF COMERCE, INDUSTRY ANO TOURISM OF IJUÍ. In spite of this number, only 40 firms were assessed because the others were closed (14) or not found (24). The assessment was made through a questionnaire applied IN LOCO in a period comprised between June/96 to February/97. The numeric data about the amount of waste is a monthly average value estimated by the firms themselves. The waste produced in higher amounts are: metals, fusing sand, office paper and dining hall scraps. The total amount of waste produced makes 48.809 Kg/month, being 14.711 Kg/month are reciclated. The waste not recycled makes 34.098 Kg/month and is sent to junk yards, burnt or thrown in the municipal waste deposit 101. The fusing sand, wich is the waste produced in major amounts of size, isn't produced anymore. In this case the total amount of waste produced goes to 18.809 Kg/month, with a recycling percentage of 78%Este trabalho teve como objetivo, avaliar os tipos e as quantidades de resíduos produzidos pelas empresas metalúrgicas da cidade de Ijuí. A relação das 78 empresas metalúrgicas foi extraída do Cadastro dos Tirbutos Municipais/96, fornecidos pela Secretaria de Indústria, Comércio e Turismo de Ijuí, no entanto apenas 40 empresas foram avaliadas. As restantes foram fechadas (14) ou não foram localizadas (24). A avaliação foi realizada através de questionário aplicado in loco, no período de junho/96 a fevereiro/97. Os dados numéricos, referentes as quantidades de resíduos representam, um valor médio mensal estimado pelas empresas. Os resíduos produzidos em maior quantidade são: metais, areia de fundição, papel de escritório e resíduos de refeitório. A quantidade total de resíduos produzidos é de 48.809kg/mês, sendo que 14.711kg/mês é reciclado. Os resíduos encaminhados para reciclagem eram vendidos, reciclados pela empresa, ou ainda, doados. Os resíduos não recíclados (34.098 kg/mês) eram depositados em terrenos baldios, queimados ou enviados ao depósito municipal. A areia de fundição, resíduo produzido em maior quantidade , não está sendo mais produzida; neste caso a quantidade total de resíduos produzidos passa para 18.809kg/mês, com um percentual de reciclagem de 78%

    Serum Levels of Infliximab and Anti-Infliximab Antibodies in Brazilian Patients with Crohn’s Disease

    OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the quantitative serum level of infliximab (IFX) as well as the detection of anti-infliximab antibodies (ATIs) in patients with Crohn’s disease (CD). METHOD: Forty patients with CD under treatment at a tertiary center in southeastern Brazil were evaluated. Their use of infliximab was continuous and regular. We analyzed and compared the differences in the IFX and ATI levels between the patients with active CD (CDA) and those with CD in remission (CDR). RESULTS: There was no difference in the IFX level between the CDA and CDR groups (p40.05). Eighty percent of all patients had IFX levels above the therapeutic concentration (6-10 mg/mL). Two (9%) of the 22 patients with active disease and four (22.2%) of the 18 patients in remission had undetectable levels of IFX. Four (66.6%) of the six patients with undetectable levels of IFX had positive ATI levels; three of these patients were in remission, and one had active disease. In addition, the other two patients with undetectable levels of IFX presented ATI levels close to positivity (2.7 and 2.8 AU/ml). None of the patients with therapeutic or supratherapeutic IFX levels had positive ATI levels. CONCLUSIONS: The undetectable levels of IFX correlated with the detection of ATIs, which was independent of disease activity. Immunogenicity was not the main factor for the loss of response to IFX in our study, and the majority of patients in both groups (CDA and CDR) had supratherapeutic levels of IFX

    Difference Revised: Gender and Transformation among the Amazonian Runa

    In this paper, I will explore how knowledge practices among the Runa of the Ecuadorian Amazon are informed by the specificity of local gender constructions. I will argue that while men learn to be ‘proper’ persons primarily through the ingestion of substances which penetrate inside their bodies and change them from the interior, women learn to become ‘proper’ Runa through imitating and reproducing specific movements. This difference in learning regimes, I argue, is based upon a priori conceptualisation of men and women as distinct kinds of beings. I argue that the Runa conceptualise as gender difference the way in which exteriority and interiority are played out in male and female persons. Unlike other Amazonian cases, women are understood by the Runa as ‘naturally’ predisposed to exteriority. This has important repercussions in the way cultural change is thought to affect women and men, especially in contrast to other Amazonian people

    Azimuthal anisotropy of charged jet production in root s(NN)=2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions

    We present measurements of the azimuthal dependence of charged jet production in central and semi-central root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions with respect to the second harmonic event plane, quantified as nu(ch)(2) (jet). Jet finding is performed employing the anti-k(T) algorithm with a resolution parameter R = 0.2 using charged tracks from the ALICE tracking system. The contribution of the azimuthal anisotropy of the underlying event is taken into account event-by-event. The remaining (statistical) region-to-region fluctuations are removed on an ensemble basis by unfolding the jet spectra for different event plane orientations independently. Significant non-zero nu(ch)(2) (jet) is observed in semi-central collisions (30-50% centrality) for 20 <p(T)(ch) (jet) <90 GeV/c. The azimuthal dependence of the charged jet production is similar to the dependence observed for jets comprising both charged and neutral fragments, and compatible with measurements of the nu(2) of single charged particles at high p(T). Good agreement between the data and predictions from JEWEL, an event generator simulating parton shower evolution in the presence of a dense QCD medium, is found in semi-central collisions.     Production of He-4 and (4) in Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S=2.76 TeV at the LHC

    Results on the production of He-4 and (4) nuclei in Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S = 2.76 TeV in the rapidity range vertical bar y vertical bar <1, using the ALICE detector, are presented in this paper. The rapidity densities corresponding to 0-10% central events are found to be dN/dy4(He) = (0.8 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.3 (syst)) x 10(-6) and dN/dy4 = (1.1 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.2 (syst)) x 10(-6), respectively. This is in agreement with the statistical thermal model expectation assuming the same chemical freeze-out temperature (T-chem = 156 MeV) as for light hadrons. The measured ratio of (4)/He-4 is 1.4 +/- 0.8 (stat) +/- 0.5 (syst). (C) 2018 Published by Elsevier B.V.Peer reviewe
