Heavy Viable Trajectories of Controlled Systems
We define and study the concept of heavy viable trajectories of a controlled system with feedbacks. Viable trajectories are trajectories satisfying at each instant given constraints on the state. The controls regulating viable trajectories evolve according a set-valued feedback map. Heavy viable trajectories are the ones which are associated to the controls in the feedback map whose velocity has at each instant the minimal norm. We construct the differential equation governing the evolution of the controls associated to heavy viable trajectories and we prove their existence
Anticancer activity of an extract from needles and twigs of Taxus cuspidata and its synergistic effect as a cocktail with 5-fluorouracil
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Botanical medicines are increasingly combined with chemotherapeutics as anticancer drug cocktails. This study aimed to assess the chemotherapeutic potential of an extract of <it>Taxus cuspidata </it>(<it>TC</it>) needles and twigs produced by artificial cuttage and its co-effects as a cocktail with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Components of <it>TC </it>extract were identified by HPLC fingerprinting. Cytotoxicity analysis was performed by MTT assay or ATP assay. Apoptosis studies were analyzed by H & E, PI, TUNEL staining, as well as Annexin V/PI assay. Cell cycle analysis was performed by flow cytometry. 5-FU concentrations in rat plasma were determined by HPLC and the pharmacokinetic parameters were estimated using 3p87 software. Synergistic efficacy was subjected to median effect analysis with the mutually nonexclusive model using Calcusyn1 software. The significance of differences between values was estimated by using a one-way ANOVA.</p> <p>Results</p> <p><it>TC </it>extract reached inhibition rates of 70-90% in different human cancer cell lines (HL-60, BGC-823, KB, Bel-7402, and HeLa) but only 5-7% in normal mouse T/B lymphocytes, demonstrating the broad-spectrum anticancer activity and low toxicity to normal cells of <it>TC </it>extract <it>in vitro</it>. <it>TC </it>extract inhibited cancer cell growth by inducing apoptosis and G<sub>2</sub>/M cell cycle arrest. Most interestingly, <it>TC </it>extract and 5-FU, combined as a cocktail, synergistically inhibited the growth of cancer cells <it>in vitro</it>, with Combination Index values (CI) ranging from 0.90 to 0.26 at different effect levels from IC50 to IC90 in MCF-7 cells, CI ranging from 0.93 to 0.13 for IC40 to IC90 in PC-3M-1E8 cells, and CI < 1 in A549 cells. In addition, the cocktail had lower cytotoxicity in normal human cell (HEL) than 5-FU used alone. Furthermore, <it>TC </it>extract did not affect the pharmacokinetics of 5-FU in rats.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The combinational use of the <it>TC </it>extract with 5-FU displays strong cytotoxic synergy in cancer cells and low cytotoxicity in normal cells. These findings suggest that this cocktail may have a potential role in cancer treatment.</p
Search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at √ s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector
Results of a search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum are reported. The search uses 20.3 fb−1 of √ s = 8 TeV data collected in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events are required to have at least one jet with pT > 120 GeV and no leptons. Nine signal regions are considered with increasing missing transverse momentum requirements between Emiss T > 150 GeV and Emiss T > 700 GeV. Good agreement is observed between the number of events in data and Standard Model expectations. The results are translated into exclusion limits on models with either large extra spatial dimensions, pair production of weakly interacting dark matter candidates, or production of very light gravitinos in a gauge-mediated supersymmetric model. Oral squamous cell cancer: early detection and the role of alcohol and smoking
Objective: Oral squamous cell carcinoma has a remarkable incidence worldwide and a fairly onerous prognosis, encouraging further research on factors that might modify disease outcome. Data sources: A web-based search for all types of articles published was initiated using Medline/Pub Med, with the key words such as oral cancer, alcohol consumption, genetic polymorphisms, tobacco smoking and prevention. The search was restricted to articles published in English, with no publication date restriction (last update 2010). Review Methods: In this review article, we approach the factors for a cytologic diagnosis during OSCC development and the markers used in modern diagnostic technologies as well. We also reviewed available studies of the combined effects of alcohol drinking and genetic polymorphisms on alcohol-related cancer risk. Results: The interaction of smoking and alcohol significantly increases the risk for aero-digestive cancers. The interaction between smoking and alcohol consumption seems to be responsible for a significant amount of disease. Conclusion: Published scientific data show promising pathways for the future development of more effective prognosis. There is a clear need for new prognostic indicators, which could be used in diagnostics and, therefore a better selection of the most effective treatment can be achieved
Jogo educacional sobre avaliação em fisioterapia: uma nova abordagem acadêmica
Este artigo relata a criação de um jogo educacional sobre avaliação em fisioterapia. Uma nova abordagem acadêmica foi proposta para complementar a metodologia atual, basicamente expositiva, especialmente em cursos com conteúdo prático, como a fisioterapia. Uma estratégia pedagógica com casos clínicos e recursos tecnológicos inovadores pode atrair a atenção do estudante, permitindo um aprendizado mais intenso e ativo. O aplicativo foi criado no Adobe Flash CS3 com a linguagem Extensible Markup Language (XML) para a organização das perguntas múltipla escolha. O jogo é composto por quatro salas de atendimento sobre avaliação neurológica, respiratória, musculoesquelética e em terapia intensiva. Há, em cada sala, um caso clínico, seguido de questões múltipla escolha e, por fim, uma questão especial, contendo vídeos ou imagens. Ao responder as questões de forma equivocada, o participante é direcionado a uma sala de estudos com a literatura relacionada ao tema e alguns artigos sugeridos. Para avaliar o impacto desse jogo no processo de aprendizado, serão necessários mais estudos, porém o desenvolvimento de novas estratégias para aprimorar o método de ensino atual é de extrema importância.This article reports the creation of an education game about physiotherapy's evaluation. It proposes the use of new academic approach to improve the existing teaching method of expositive classes and especially for practical courses like physiotherapy. A pedagogical approach with clinical cases and technological resources is capable of attracting the student attention and may stimulate active learning processes. The game was created with Adobe Flash CS3 combined with an Extensible Markup Language (XML) for the questions. Four treatment rooms were created in four different areas: Neurology, Respiratory, Orthopedic and Intensive Care Unit (ICU). In every room there is a case, followed by multiple choice questions and special questions with pictures and videos. There is also a classroom for each case, where some literature and articles for further studies are suggested. To measure the influence of this educational game in the learning process, more studies are needed, however the development of new strategies to improve the existing teaching method is very important
