The idea of stable, localized bundles of energy has strong appeal as a model
for particles. In the 1950s John Wheeler envisioned such bundles as smooth
configurations of electromagnetic energy that he called {\em geons}, but none
were found. Instead, particle-like solutions were found in the late 1960s with
the addition of a scalar field, and these were given the name {\em boson
stars}. Since then, boson stars find use in a wide variety of models as sources
of dark matter, as black hole mimickers, in simple models of binary systems,
and as a tool in finding black holes in higher dimensions with only a single
killing vector. We discuss important varieties of boson stars, their dynamic

We report on searches for B- --> Ds- Phi and B- --> Ds*- Phi. In the context
of the Standard Model, these decays are expected to be highly suppressed since
they proceed through annihilation of the b and u-bar quarks in the B- meson.
Our results are based on 234 million Upsilon(4S) --> B Bbar decays collected
with the BABAR detector at SLAC. We find no evidence for these decays, and we
set Bayesian 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions BF(B-
--> Ds- Phi) Ds*- Phi)<1.2x10^(-5). These results

We report a measurement of the diffractive structure function FjjD of
the antiproton obtained from a study of dijet events produced in association
with a leading antiproton in pˉp collisions at s=630 GeV at the
Fermilab Tevatron. The ratio of FjjD at s=630 GeV to FjjD
obtained from a similar measurement at s=1800 GeV is compared with
expectations from QCD factorization and with theoretical predictions. We also
report a measurement of the ξ (x-Pomeron) and β (x of parton in
Pomeron) dependence of FjjD at s=1800 GeV. In the region
0.035<ξ<0.095, ∣t∣<1 GeV2 and β<0.5, FjjD(β,ξ) is
found to be of the form β−1.0±0.1ξ−0.9±0.1, which obeys

- Field of study
We report a study of the decays B0 -> J/psi K(*)0 pi+ pi-, which involve the
creation of a u u-bar or d d-bar quark pair in addition to a b-bar -> c-bar(c
s-bar) decay. The data sample consists of 110 1/pb of p p-bar collisions at
sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV collected by the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron
collider during 1992-1995. We measure the branching ratios to be BR(B0 -> J/psi
K*0 pi+ pi-) = (8.0 +- 2.2 +- 1.5) * 10^{-4} and BR(B0 -> J/psi K0 pi+ pi-) =
(1.1 +- 0.4 +- 0.2) * 10^{-3}. Contributions to these decays are seen from
psi(2S) K(*)0, J/psi K0 rho0, J/psi K*+ pi-, and J/psi K1(1270)

- Field of study
The Cathode Strip Chambers (CSCs) constitute the primary muon tracking device
in the CMS endcaps. Their performance has been evaluated using data taken
during a cosmic ray run in fall 2008. Measured noise levels are low, with the
number of noisy channels well below 1%. Coordinate resolution was measured for
all types of chambers, and fall in the range 47 microns to 243 microns. The
efficiencies for local charged track triggers, for hit and for segments
reconstruction were measured, and are above 99%. The timing resolution per
layer is approximately 5 ns

Organic matter plays an important role in many soil properties, and for that reason it is necessary to identify management systems which maintain or increase its concentrations. The aim of the present study was to determine the quality and quantity of organic C in different compartments of the soil fraction in different Amazonian ecosystems. The soil organic matter (FSOM) was fractionated and soil C stocks were estimated in primary forest (PF), pasture (P), secondary succession (SS) and an agroforestry system (AFS). Samples were collected at the depths 0-5, 5-10, 10-20, 20-40, 40-60, 60-80, 80-100, 100-160, and 160-200 cm. Densimetric and particle size analysis methods were used for FSOM, obtaining the following fractions: FLF (free light fraction), IALF (intra-aggregate light fraction), F-sand (sand fraction), F-clay (clay fraction) and F-silt (silt fraction). The 0-5 cm layer contains 60% of soil C, which is associated with the FLF. The F-clay was responsible for 70% of C retained in the 0-200 cm depth. There was a 12.7 g kg-1 C gain in the FLF from PF to SS, and a 4.4 g kg-1 C gain from PF to AFS, showing that SS and AFS areas recover soil organic C, constituting feasible C-recovery alternatives for degraded and intensively farmed soils in Amazonia. The greatest total stocks of carbon in soil fractions were, in decreasing order: (101.3 Mg ha-1 of C - AFS) > (98.4 Mg ha-1 of C - FP) > (92.9 Mg ha-1 of C - SS) > (64.0 Mg ha-1 of C - P). We present a measurement of the coefficient alpha_2 of the leptonic
polar-angle distribution from W boson decays, as a function of the W transverse
momentum. The measurement uses an 80+/-4 pb^{-1} sample of proton-antiproton
collisions at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV collected by the CDF detector and includes data
from both the W->e+nu and W->mu+nu decay channels. We fit the W boson
transverse mass distribution to a set of templates from a Monte Carlo event
generator and detector simulation in several ranges of the W transverse
momentum. The measurement agrees with the Standard Model expectation, whereby
the ratio of longitudinally to transversely polarized W bosons, in the
Collins-Soper W rest frame, increases with the W transverse momentum at a rate
of approximately 15% per 10 GeV/c.Comment: 47 pages, 16 figures, submitted to Physical Review

We report a measurement of the ratio of the bottom quark production cross
section in antiproton-proton collisions at 630 GeV to 1800 GeV using bottom
quarks with transverse momenta greater than 10.75 GeV identified through their
semileptonic decays and long lifetimes. The measured ratio
sigma(630)/sigma(1800) = 0.171 +/- .024 +/- .012 is in good agreement with
next-to-leading order (NLO) quantum chromodynamics (QCD)

- Field of study
We search for standard model single-top-quark production in the W-gluon
fusion and W* channels using 106 pb^-1 of data from p-pbar collisions at
sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We set an
upper limit at 95% C.L. on the combined W-gluon fusion and W* single-top cross
section of 14 pb, roughly six times larger than the standard model prediction.
Separate 95% C.L. upper limits in the W-gluon fusion and W* channels are also
