Radiation induced force between two planar waveguides
We study the electromagnetic force exerted on a pair of parallel slab
waveguides by the light propagating through them. We have calculated the
dependence of the force on the slab separation by means of the Maxwell--Stress
tensor formalism and we have discussed its main features for the different
propagation modes: spatially symmetric (antisymmetric) modes give rise to an
attractive (repulsive) interaction. We have derived the asymptotic behaviors of
the force at small and large separation and we have quantitatively estimated
the mechanical deflection induced on a realistic air-bridge structure.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure
The statistical parton distributions: status and prospects
New experimental results on polarized structure functions, cross sections for
neutral and charge current reactions and () charge
current on isoscalar targets are compared with predictions using the
statistical parton distributions, which were previously determined. New data on
cross sections for Drell-Yan processes, single jet in collisions and
inclusive production in collisions are also compared with
predictions from this theoretical approach. The good agreement which we find
with all these tests against experiment, strenghtens our opinion on the
relevance of the role of quantum statistics for parton distributions. We will

Coherence length of an elongated condensate: a study by matter-wave interferometry
We measure the spatial correlation function of Bose-Einstein condensates in
the cross-over region between phase-coherent and strongly phase-fluctuating
condensates. We observe the continuous path from a gaussian-like shape to an
exponential-like shape characteristic of one-dimensional phase-fluctuations.
The width of the spatial correlation function as a function of the temperature
shows that the condensate coherence length undergoes no sharp transition

Measurement of the LT-asymmetry in \pi^0 electroproduction at the energy of the \Delta (1232) resonance
The reaction p(e,e'p)pi^0 has been studied at Q^2=0.2 (GeV/c)^2 in the region
of W=1232 MeV. From measurements left and right of q, cross section asymmetries
\rho_LT have been obtained in forward kinematics \rho_LT(\theta_\pi^0=20deg) =
(-11.68 +/- 2.36_stat +/- 2.36_sys)$ and backward kinematics
\rho_LT(\theta_\pi^0=160deg) =(12.18 +/- 0.27_stat +/- 0.82_sys). Multipole
ratios \Re(S_1+^* M_1+)/|M_1+|^2 and \Re(S_0+^* M_1+)/|M_1+|^2 were determined
in the framework of the MAID2003 model. The results are in agreement with older
data. The unusally strong negative \Re(S_0+^* M_1+)/|M_1+|^2 required to bring
also the result of Kalleicher et al. in accordance with the rest of the data is

Eikonal representation in the momentum-transfer space
By means of empirical fits to the differential cross section data on pp and
p(bar)p elastic scattering, above 10 GeV (center-of-mass energy), we determine
the eikonal in the momentum - transfer space (q^2- space). We make use of a
numerical method and a novel semi-analytical method, through which the
uncertainties from the fit parameters can be propagated up to the eikonal in
the - space. A systematic study of the effect of the experimental
information at large values of the momentum transfer is developed and discussed
in detail. We present statistical evidence that the imaginary part of the
eikonal changes sign in the q^2- space and that the position of the zero
decreases as the energy increases; after the position of the zero, the eikonal
presents a minimum and then goes to zero through negative values. We discuss
the applicability of our results in the phenomenological context, outlining
some connections with nonperturbative QCD. A short review and a critical
discussion on the main results concerning "model-independent" analyses are also

Triangulations and Severi varieties
We consider the problem of constructing triangulations of projective planes
over Hurwitz algebras with minimal numbers of vertices. We observe that the
numbers of faces of each dimension must be equal to the dimensions of certain
representations of the automorphism groups of the corresponding Severi
varieties. We construct a complex involving these representations, which should
be considered as a geometric version of the (putative) triangulations
Amicable pairs and aliquot cycles for elliptic curves
An amicable pair for an elliptic curve E/Q is a pair of primes (p,q) of good
reduction for E satisfying #E(F_p) = q and #E(F_q) = p. In this paper we study
elliptic amicable pairs and analogously defined longer elliptic aliquot cycles.
We show that there exist elliptic curves with arbitrarily long aliqout cycles,
but that CM elliptic curves (with j not 0) have no aliqout cycles of length
greater than two. We give conjectural formulas for the frequency of amicable
pairs. For CM curves, the derivation of precise conjectural formulas involves a
detailed analysis of the values of the Grossencharacter evaluated at a prime
ideal P in End(E) having the property that #E(F_P) is prime. This is especially
intricate for the family of curves with j = 0.Comment: 53 page
Elliptic flow of charged particles in Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV
We report the first measurement of charged particle elliptic flow in Pb-Pb
collisions at 2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron
Collider. The measurement is performed in the central pseudorapidity region
(||<0.8) and transverse momentum range 0.2< < 5.0 GeV/. The
elliptic flow signal v, measured using the 4-particle correlation method,
averaged over transverse momentum and pseudorapidity is 0.087 0.002
(stat) 0.004 (syst) in the 40-50% centrality class. The differential
elliptic flow v reaches a maximum of 0.2 near = 3
GeV/. Compared to RHIC Au-Au collisions at 200 GeV, the elliptic flow
increases by about 30%. Some hydrodynamic model predictions which include
viscous corrections are in agreement with the observed increase.Comment: 10 pages, 4 captioned figures, published version, figures at

The Universal Kummer Threefold
The universal Kummer threefold is a 9-dimensional variety that represents the
total space of the 6-dimensional family of Kummer threefolds in 7-dimensional
projective space. We compute defining polynomials for three versions of this
family, over the Satake hypersurface, over the G\"opel variety, and over the
reflection representation of type E7. We develop classical themes such as theta
functions and Coble's quartic hypersurface using current tools from
combinatorics, geometry, and commutative algebra. Symbolic and numerical
computations for genus 3 moduli spaces appear alongside toric and tropical

Risk of infection and adverse outcomes among pregnant working women in selected occupational groups: A study in the Danish National Birth Cohort
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Exposure to infectious pathogens is a frequent occupational hazard for women who work with patients, children, animals or animal products. The purpose of the present study is to investigate if women working in occupations where exposure to infections agents is common have a high risk of infections and adverse pregnancy outcomes.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We used data from the Danish National Birth Cohort, a population-based cohort study and studied the risk of Infection and adverse outcomes in pregnant women working with patients, with children, with food products or with animals. The regression analysis were adjusted for the following covariates: maternal age, parity, history of miscarriage, socio-occupational status, pre-pregnancy body mass index, smoking habit, alcohol consumption.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Pregnant women who worked with patients or children or food products had an excess risk of sick leave during pregnancy for more than three days. Most of negative reproductive outcomes were not increased in these occupations but the prevalence of congenital anomalies (CAs) was slightly higher in children of women who worked with patients. The prevalence of small for gestational age infants was higher among women who worked with food products. There was no association between occupation infections during pregnancy and the risk of reproductive failures in the exposed groups. However, the prevalence of CAs was slightly higher among children of women who suffered some infection during pregnancy but the numbers were small.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Despite preventive strategies, working in specific jobs during pregnancy may impose a higher risk of infections, and working in some of these occupations may impose a slightly higher risk of CAs in their offspring. Most other reproductive failures were not increased in these occupations.</p
