    3D Dynamic Modeling of the Head-Neck Complex for Fast Eye and Head Orientation Movements Research

    A 3D dynamic computer model for the movement of the head-neck complex is presented. It incorporates anatomically correct information about the diverse elements forming the system. The skeleton is considered as a set of interconnected rigid 3D bodies following the Newton-Euler laws of movement. The muscles are modeled using Enderle's linear model, which shows equivalent dynamic characteristics to Loeb's virtual muscle model. The soft tissues, namely, the ligaments, intervertebral disks, and facet joints, are modeled considering their physiological roles and dynamics. In contrast with other head and neck models developed for safety research, the model is aimed to study the neural control of the complex during fast eye and head movements, such as saccades and gaze shifts.     SARA-Service: Langzeitverfügbarkeit und Publikation von Softwareartefakten

    Das SARA-Projekt (Software Archiving of Research Artefacts) hat das Ziel, einen neuen wissenschaftlichen Dienst zu entwickeln, mit dem Forschungsdaten und Software langfristig verfügbar gemacht und publiziert werden können. Die Posterpräsentation stellt Motivation, Zielsetzung sowie wichtige Kernelemente des SARA-Service vor. Im Zentrum der Darstellung steht der SARA-Service, der auf Git und den dort bereitgestellten Mechanismus zur Softwareversionierung aufbaut. Hierbei fungiert ein durch die Universität Konstanz bereitgestellter und zukünftig als Landesdienst betriebener GitLab-Server als Langzeitarchiv. Nutzer können hier ihre jeweiligen Versionsstände der Software zentral speichern. Die archivierten Versionen können mit dem SARA-Service zusätzlich in einem DSpace-Repositorium veröffentlicht werden. Der neue Service soll nach Ablauf der Evaluierungsphase grundsätzlich allen Fachdisziplinen zur Verfügung stehen

    Development of an Interoperable GNSS Space Service Volume

    Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), now routinely used for navigation by spacecraft in low Earth orbit, are being used increasingly by high-altitude users in geostationary orbit and high eccentric orbits as well, near to and above the GNSS constellations themselves. Available signals in these regimes are very limited for any single GNSS constellation due to the weak signal strength, the blockage of signals by the Earth, and the limited number of satellites. But with the recent development of multiple GNSS constellations and ongoing upgrades to existing constellations, multi-GNSS signal availability is set to improve significantly. This will only be achieved if these signals are designed to be interoperable and are clearly documented and supported. All satellite navigation constellation providers are working together through the United Nations International Committee on GNSS (ICG) to establish an interoperable multi-GNSS Space Service Volume (SSV) for the benefit of all GNSS space users. The multi-GNSS SSV represents a common set of baseline definitions and assumptions for high-altitude service in space, documents the service provided by each constellation, and provides a framework for continued support for space users. This paper provides an overview of the GNSS SSV concept, development, status, and achievements within the ICG. It describes the final adopted definition and performance characteristics of the GNSS SSV, as well as the numerous benefits and use cases enabled by this development. Extensive technical analysis was also performed to illustrate these benefits in terms of signal availability, both on a global scale, and for multiple distinct mission types. This analysis is summarized here and presented in detail in a companion paper by Enderle, et al

    Meeting report: discussions and preliminary findings on extracellular RNA measurement methods from laboratories in the NIH Extracellular RNA Communication Consortium

    Extracellular RNAs (exRNAs) have been identified in all tested biofluids and have been associated with a variety of extracellular vesicles, ribonucleoprotein complexes and lipoprotein complexes. Much of the interest in exRNAs lies in the fact that they may serve as signalling molecules between cells, their potential to serve as biomarkers for prediction and diagnosis of disease and the possibility that exRNAs or the extracellular particles that carry them might be used for therapeutic purposes. Among the most significant bottlenecks to progress in this field is the lack of robust and standardized methods for collection and processing of biofluids, separation of different types of exRNA-containing particles and isolation and analysis of exRNAs. The Sample and Assay Standards Working Group of the Extracellular RNA Communication Consortium is a group of laboratories funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health to develop such methods. In our first joint endeavour, we held a series of conference calls and in-person meetings to survey the methods used among our members, placed them in the context of the current literature and used our findings to identify areas in which the identification of robust methodologies would promote rapid advancements in the exRNA field

    Search for supersymmetry in events with b-quark jets and missing transverse energy in pp collisions at 7 TeV

    Results are presented from a search for physics beyond the standard model based on events with large missing transverse energy, at least three jets, and at least one, two, or three b-quark jets. The study is performed using a sample of proton-proton collision data collected at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2011. The integrated luminosity of the sample is 4.98 inverse femtobarns. The observed number of events is found to be consistent with the standard model expectation, which is evaluated using control samples in the data. The results are used to constrain cross sections for the production of supersymmetric particles decaying to b-quark-enriched final states in the context of simplified model spectra.Comment: Submitted to Physical Review

    Dynamic Regulation of H3K27 Trimethylation during Arabidopsis Differentiation

    During growth of multicellular organisms, identities of stem cells and differentiated cells need to be maintained. Cell fate is epigenetically controlled by the conserved Polycomb-group (Pc-G) proteins that repress their target genes by catalyzing histone H3 lysine 27 trimethylation (H3K27me3). Although H3K27me3 is associated with mitotically stable gene repression, a large fraction of H3K27me3 target genes are tissue-specifically activated during differentiation processes. However, in plants it is currently unclear whether H3K27me3 is already present in undifferentiated cells and dynamically regulated to permit tissue-specific gene repression or activation. We used whole-genome tiling arrays to identify the H3K27me3 target genes in undifferentiated cells of the shoot apical meristem and in differentiated leaf cells. Hundreds of genes gain or lose H3K27me3 upon differentiation, demonstrating dynamic regulation of an epigenetic modification in plants. H3K27me3 is correlated with gene repression, and its release preferentially results in tissue-specific gene activation, both during differentiation and in Pc-G mutants. We further reveal meristem- and leaf-specific targeting of individual gene families including known but also likely novel regulators of differentiation and stem cell regulation. Interestingly, H3K27me3 directly represses only specific transcription factor families, but indirectly activates others through H3K27me3-mediated silencing of microRNA genes. Furthermore, H3K27me3 targeting of genes involved in biosynthesis, transport, perception, and signal transduction of the phytohormone auxin demonstrates control of an entire signaling pathway. Based on these and previous analyses, we propose that H3K27me3 is one of the major determinants of tissue-specific expression patterns in plants, which restricts expression of its direct targets and promotes gene expression indirectly by repressing miRNA genes

    Juxtaposing BTE and ATE – on the role of the European insurance industry in funding civil litigation

    One of the ways in which legal services are financed, and indeed shaped, is through private insurance arrangement. Two contrasting types of legal expenses insurance contracts (LEI) seem to dominate in Europe: before the event (BTE) and after the event (ATE) legal expenses insurance. Notwithstanding institutional differences between different legal systems, BTE and ATE insurance arrangements may be instrumental if government policy is geared towards strengthening a market-oriented system of financing access to justice for individuals and business. At the same time, emphasizing the role of a private industry as a keeper of the gates to justice raises issues of accountability and transparency, not readily reconcilable with demands of competition. Moreover, multiple actors (clients, lawyers, courts, insurers) are involved, causing behavioural dynamics which are not easily predicted or influenced. Against this background, this paper looks into BTE and ATE arrangements by analysing the particularities of BTE and ATE arrangements currently available in some European jurisdictions and by painting a picture of their respective markets and legal contexts. This allows for some reflection on the performance of BTE and ATE providers as both financiers and keepers. Two issues emerge from the analysis that are worthy of some further reflection. Firstly, there is the problematic long-term sustainability of some ATE products. Secondly, the challenges faced by policymakers that would like to nudge consumers into voluntarily taking out BTE LEI
