    What should be the right approach to water harvesting and management: (1) convenience,(2) prudence, or (3) the integration of both? The convenience approach refers to the tendency of governments and organizations to focus largely on increasing the supply of water without telling citizens to use water rationally. The prudence approach insists on the minimal and judicious use of water, something governments seldom tell citizens for the fear of losing popularity. The integration approach absorbs the best methods and technology available to intervene in the supply as well as demand side of water. With a focus on the integration approach, this study undertakes a case analysis of the Satyamev Jayate Water Cup (SJWC) by Paani Foundation that converted many draught-prone regions of the Maharashtra state of India into water-sufficient and prosperous zones by utilizing low-cost, indigenous knowledge systems and eco-friendly measures. The study aims to highlight the limitations of this massive socio-ecological campaign in the context of water management and governance

    Unusual premonsoon eddy and Kelvin wave activities in the Bay of Bengal during Indian Summer monsoon deficit in June 2009 and 2012

    An investigation of the eddy and coastal Kelvin wave activities in the Bay of Bengal (BoB) is carried out during premonsoon season in two years of Indian summer monsoon deficit in June (2009 and 2012), occurred in the recent warming hiatus period. Using altimeter observations, our study reveals that over the northern BoB cyclonic eddy kinetic energy is reduced by 35% and 50% from the climatology during premonsoon seasons in 2009 and 2012, respectively, while the cyclonic eddy area is reduced by 18% and 24%, respectively. A concurrent reduction is observed in the first upwelling Kelvin wave (uKW) activities in the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean as well as in the coastal BoB for these years. The reduction in the generation of the first uKW in the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean is attributed to the westerly wind anomalies in January-March of these years. Additionally, meridional wind stress anomalies during March-April in these years are found to be southerly, causing anomalous coastal downwelling in the eastern rim of BoB. This coastal downwelling blocks the propagation of the first uKW. The decrease in the first uKW activities in the coastal waveguide of the BoB reduces the radiation of upwelling Rossby waves, thereby decreasing the cyclonic eddy activities in the northern BoB. The results from this letter could be helpful for further understanding of upper ocean mixing processes in the BoB during monsoon deficit years

    Assessing copy number abnormalities and copy-neutral loss-of-heterozygosity across the genome as best practice in diagnostic evaluation of acute myeloid leukemia: An evidence-based review from the cancer genomics consortium (CGC) myeloid neoplasms working group

    Structural genomic abnormalities, including balanced chromosomal rearrangements, copy number gains and losses and copy-neutral loss-of-heterozygosity (CN-LOH) represent an important category of diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic markers in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Genome-wide evaluation for copy number abnormalities (CNAs) is at present performed by karyotype analysis which has low resolution and is unobtainable in a subset of cases. Furthermore, examination for possible CN-LOH in leukemia cells is at present not routinely performed in the clinical setting. Chromosomal microarray (CMA) analysis is a widely available assay for CNAs and CN-LOH in diagnostic laboratories, but there are currently no guidelines how to best incorporate this technology into clinical testing algorithms for neoplastic diseases including AML. The Cancer Genomics Consortium Working Group for Myeloid Neoplasms performed an extensive review of peer-reviewed publications focused on CMA analysis in AML. Here we summarize evidence regarding clinical utility of CMA analysis in AML extracted from published data, and provide recommendations for optimal utilization of CMA testing in the diagnostic workup. In addition, we provide a list of CNAs and CN-LOH regions which have documented clinical significance in diagnosis, prognosis and treatment decisions in AML

    Azimuthal anisotropy of charged jet production in root s(NN)=2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions

    We present measurements of the azimuthal dependence of charged jet production in central and semi-central root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions with respect to the second harmonic event plane, quantified as nu(ch)(2) (jet). Jet finding is performed employing the anti-k(T) algorithm with a resolution parameter R = 0.2 using charged tracks from the ALICE tracking system. The contribution of the azimuthal anisotropy of the underlying event is taken into account event-by-event. The remaining (statistical) region-to-region fluctuations are removed on an ensemble basis by unfolding the jet spectra for different event plane orientations independently. Significant non-zero nu(ch)(2) (jet) is observed in semi-central collisions (30-50% centrality) for 20 <p(T)(ch) (jet) <90 GeV/c. The azimuthal dependence of the charged jet production is similar to the dependence observed for jets comprising both charged and neutral fragments, and compatible with measurements of the nu(2) of single charged particles at high p(T). Good agreement between the data and predictions from JEWEL, an event generator simulating parton shower evolution in the presence of a dense QCD medium, is found in semi-central collisions.     Production of He-4 and (4) in Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S=2.76 TeV at the LHC

    Results on the production of He-4 and (4) nuclei in Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S = 2.76 TeV in the rapidity range vertical bar y vertical bar <1, using the ALICE detector, are presented in this paper. The rapidity densities corresponding to 0-10% central events are found to be dN/dy4(He) = (0.8 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.3 (syst)) x 10(-6) and dN/dy4 = (1.1 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.2 (syst)) x 10(-6), respectively. This is in agreement with the statistical thermal model expectation assuming the same chemical freeze-out temperature (T-chem = 156 MeV) as for light hadrons. The measured ratio of (4)/He-4 is 1.4 +/- 0.8 (stat) +/- 0.5 (syst). (C) 2018 Published by Elsevier B.V.Peer reviewe
