Terrace reconstruction and long profile projection: a case study from the Solent river system near Southampton, England
River terrace sequences are important frameworks for archaeological evidence and as
such it is important to produce robust correlations between what are often fragmentary
remnants of ancient terraces. This paper examines both conceptual and practical issues
related to such correlations, using a case study from the eastern part of the former Solent
River system near Southampton, England. In this region two recent terrace schemes
have been constructed using different data to describe the terrace deposits: one based
mainly on terrace surfaces; the other on gravel thicknesses, often not recording the
terrace surface itself. The utility of each of these types of data in terrace correlation is
discussed in relation to the complexity of the record, the probability of post-depositional
alteration of surface sediments and comparison of straight-line projections with modern
river long profiles. Correlation using age estimates is also discussed, in relation to
optically-stimulated luminescence dating of sand lenses within terrace gravels in this
region during the PASHCC project. It is concluded that the need for replication at single
sites means that this approach has limited use for correlative purposes, although dating
of sediments is important for understanding wider landscape evolution and patterns of
human occupation
PACS and SPIRE photometer maps of M33: First results of the Herschel M33 extended survey (HERM33ES)
Within the framework of the HERM33ES key project, we are studying the star
forming interstellar medium in the nearby, metal-poor spiral galaxy M33,
exploiting the high resolution and sensitivity of Herschel. We use PACS and
SPIRE maps at 100, 160, 250, 350, and 500 micron wavelength, to study the
variation of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with galacto-centric
distance. Detailed SED modeling is performed using azimuthally averaged fluxes
in elliptical rings of 2 kpc width, out to 8 kpc galacto-centric distance.
Simple isothermal and two-component grey body models, with fixed dust
emissivity index, are fitted to the SEDs between 24 and 500 micron using also
MIPS/Spitzer data, to derive first estimates of the dust physical conditions.
The far-infrared and submillimeter maps reveal the branched, knotted spiral
structure of M33. An underlying diffuse disk is seen in all SPIRE maps (250-500
micron). Two component fits to the SEDs agree better than isothermal models
with the observed, total and radially averaged flux densities. The two
component model, with beta fixed at 1.5, best fits the global and the radial
SEDs. The cold dust component clearly dominates; the relative mass of the warm
component is less than 0.3% for all the fits. The temperature of the warm
component is not well constrained and is found to be about 60K plus/minus 10K.
The temperature of the cold component drops significantly from about 24K in the
inner 2 kpc radius to 13K beyond 6 kpc radial distance, for the best fitting
model. The gas-to-dust ratio for beta=1.5, averaged over the galaxy, is higher
than the solar value by a factor of 1.5 and is roughly in agreement with the

Household Contamination with Salmonella enterica1
Household contamination with Salmonella enterica increases when occupational exposure exists (cattle farms with known salmonellosis in cattle, a salmonella research laboratory, or a veterinary clinic experiencing an outbreak of salmonellosis). Fifteen of 55 (27.2%) vacuum cleaner bags from households with occupational exposure to S. enterica were positive versus 1 of 24 (4.2% without known exposure. Use of a carpet cleaner and several cleaners/disinfectants reduced, but failed to eliminate, S. enterica from artificially contaminated carpet
High field level crossing studies on spin dimers in the low dimensional quantum spin system NaT(CO)(HO) with T=Ni,Co,Fe,Mn
In this paper we demonstrate the application of high magnetic fields to study
the magnetic properties of low dimensional spin systems. We present a case
study on the series of 2-leg spin-ladder compounds
NaT(CO)(HO) with T = Ni, Co, Fe and Mn. In all
compounds the transition metal is in the high spin configuation. The
localized spin varies from S=1 to 3/2, 2 and 5/2 within this series. The
magnetic properties were examined experimentally by magnetic susceptibility,
pulsed high field magnetization and specific heat measurements. The data are
analysed using a spin hamiltonian description. Although the transition metal
ions form structurally a 2-leg ladder, an isolated dimer model consistently
describes the observations very well. This behaviour can be understood in terms
of the different coordination and superexchange angles of the oxalate ligands
along the rungs and legs of the 2-leg spin ladder. All compounds exhibit
magnetic field driven ground state changes which at very low temperatures lead
to a multistep behaviour in the magnetization curves. In the Co and Fe
compounds a strong axial anisotropy induced by the orbital magnetism leads to a
nearly degenerate ground state and a strongly reduced critical field. We find a
monotonous decrease of the intradimer magnetic exchange if the spin quantum
number is increased
Molecular gas in NGC6946
We present imaging of molecular gas emission in the star-forming spiral
galaxy NGC6946. Our CO(1-0) and CO(3-2) images, made at 22" resolution with the
IRAM 30-m and the Heinrich Hertz 10-m radio telescopes, are the most extensive
CO observations of this galaxy and are among the most extensive observations of
molecular gas in any spiral galaxy. The molecular component in NGC6946 is
unusually massive, with a ratio of molecular to atomic Hydrogen of 0.57. A star
formation efficiency image for NGC6946 ranges by over two orders of magnitude
with highest values found in the northeastern spiral arm, and anticorrelates
with the 6cm polarized emission image, which traces the regular part of the
magnetic field. We analyse the ISM in NGC6946's disk by making 1-D and 2-D
comparisons of images made in several wavebands. A point-by-point correlation
technique finds that the molecular gas is closely associated with the
7micron-emitting dust. The high correlation found between the MIR emission and
the radio continuum at 6cm cannot be due to dust heating and gas ionization in
star-forming regions because the thermal radio emission is less correlated with
the MIR than the nonthermal emission. A coupling of magnetic fields to gas

Dynamic assessment of word learning skills of preschool children with primary language impairment
Dynamic assessment has been shown to have considerable theoretical and clinical significance in the assessment of socially disadvantaged and culturally and linguistically diverse children. In this study it is used to enhance assessment of pre-school children with primary language impairment. The purpose of the study was to determine whether a dynamic assessment (DA) has the potential to enhance the predictive capacity of a static measure of receptive vocabulary in pre-school children. Forty pre-school children were assessed using the static British Picture Vocabulary Scale (BPVS), a DA of word learning potential and an assessment of non-verbal cognitive ability. Thirty-seven children were followed up 6 months later and re-assessed using the BPVS. Although the predictive capacity of the static measure was found to be substantial, the DA increased this significantly especially for children with static scores below the 25th centile. The DA of children's word learning has the potential to add value to the static assessment of the child with low language skills, to predict subsequent receptive vocabulary skills and to increase the chance of correctly identifying children in need of ongoing support
The impact of bars on the mid-infrared dust emission of spiral galaxies: global and circumnuclear properties
We study the mid-infrared properties of a sample of 69 nearby spiral
galaxies, selected to avoid Seyfert activity contributing a significant
fraction of the central energetics, or strong tidal interaction, and to have
normal infrared luminosities. These observations were obtained with ISOCAM,
which provides an angular resolution of the order of 10 arcsec (half-power
diameter of the point spread function) and low-resolution spectro-imaging
information. Between 5 and 18 microns, we mainly observe two dust phases,
aromatic infrared bands and very small grains, both out of thermal equilibrium.
On this sample, we show that the global F15/F7 colors of galaxies are very
uniform, the only increase being found in early-type strongly barred galaxies,
consistent with previous IRAS studies. The F15/F7 excesses are unambiguously
due to galactic central regions where bar-induced starbursts occur. However,
the existence of strongly barred early-type galaxies with normal circumnuclear
colors indicates that the relationship between a distortion of the
gravitational potential and a central starburst is not straightforward. As the
physical processes at work in central regions are in principle identical in
barred and unbarred galaxies, and since this is where the mid-infrared activity
is mainly located, we investigate the mid-infrared circumnuclear properties of
all the galaxies in our sample. We show how surface brightnesses and colors are
related to both the available molecular gas content and the mean age of stellar
populations contributing to dust heating. Therefore, the star formation history
in galactic central regions can be constrained by their position in a

Modelling the spectral energy distribution of galaxies. V. The dust and PAH emission SEDs of disk galaxies
We present a self-consistent model of the spectral energy distributions
(SEDs) of spiral galaxies from the ultraviolet (UV) to the mid-infrared
(MIR)/far-infrared (FIR)/submillimeter (submm) based on a full radiative
transfer calculation of the propagation of starlight in galaxy disks. This
model predicts not only the total integrated energy absorbed in the UV/optical
and re-emitted in the infrared/submm, but also the colours of the dust emission
based on an explicit calculation of the strength and colour of the UV/optical
radiation fields heating the dust, and incorporating a full calculation of the
stochastic heating of small dust grains and PAH molecules.
The geometry of the translucent components of the model is empirically
constrained using the results from the radiation transfer analysis of Xilouris
et al. on spirals in the middle range of the Hubble sequence, while the
geometry of the optically thick components is constrained from physical
considerations with a posteriori checks of the model predictions with
observational data.
These geometrical constraints enable the dust emission to be predicted in
terms of a minimum set of free parameters: the central face-on dust opacity in
the B-band tau^f_B, a clumpiness factor F for the star-forming regions, the
star-formation rate SFR, the normalised luminosity of the old stellar
population old and the bulge-to-disk ratio B/D. We show that these parameters
are almost orthogonal in their predicted effect on the colours of the dust/PAH
emission.
The results of the calculations are made available in the form of a large
library of simulated dust emission SEDs spanning the whole parameter space of
our model, together with the corresponding library of dust attenuation

Killer whales and marine mammal trends in the North Pacific : a re-examination of evidence for sequential megafauna collapse and the prey-switching hypothesis

(2003) contend that sequential declines occurred in North Pacific populations of harbor and fur seals, Steller sea lions, and sea otters. They hypothesize that these were due to increased predation by killer whales, when industrial whaling's removal of large whales as a supposed primary food source precipitated a prey switch. Using a regional approach, we reexamined whale catch data, killer whale predation observations, and the current biomass and trends of potential prey, and found little support for the prey-switching hypothesis. Large whale biomass in the Bering Sea did not decline as much as suggested by Springer et al., and much of the reduction occurred 50–100 yr ago, well before the declines of pinnipeds and sea otters began; thus, the need to switch prey starting in the 1970s is doubtful. With the sole exception that the sea otter decline followed the decline of pinnipeds, the reported declines were not in fact sequential. Given this, it is unlikely that a sequential megafaunal collapse from whales to sea otters occurred. The spatial and temporal patterns of pinniped and sea otter population trends are more complex than Springer et al. suggest, and are often inconsistent with their hypothesis. Populations remained stable or increased in many areas, despite extensive historical whaling and high killer whale abundance. Furthermore, observed killer whale predation has largely involved pinnipeds and small cetaceans; there is little evidence that large whales were ever a major prey item in high latitudes. Small cetaceans (ignored by Springer et al.) were likely abundant throughout the period. Overall, we suggest that the Springer et al. hypothesis represents a misleading and simplistic view of events and trophic relationships within this complex marine ecosystem
