The notion of semi-symbolism has remained theoretically and practically problematic since its invention and flamboyant use by Jean-Marie Floch in the eighties and nineties of the previous century. Testing its dogmatic necessity and pragmatic effectiveness by considering the research that the latter had carried out on the icon of the Trinity painted by Andrei Rublev, and which is recorded in his posthumous work of 2009, we suggest the possibility of integrating the analytical approach of semiotics into another grid and of reorganising the relations between "contextual interference", "plastic meaning", and "semi-symbolic tool".La notion de semi-symbolisme demeure théoriquement et pratiquement problématique, depuis l’invention et l’usage flamboyant qu’en fit Jean-Marie Floch dans les années quatre-vingt et quatre-vingt dix du siècle précédent. Semisimbolismo: ¿concepto inútil para la imagen?

With this provocative title, the aim of this article is to discuss the theoretical relevance and the practical effectiveness of a widely used concept in visual semiotics: “semi-symbolism”, which precisely arose from a reflection on the image and was later generalized to several fields, starting with theory, where, by the way, it has not found an undisputable epistemological position. Regarding its practical uses, semi-symbolism has not proven to contribute to a greater understanding of the concept it represents or the formulation of solid conclusions around this phenomenon. On the contrary, its isolated use weakens both its comprehension and application. In contrast, the solid conclusions, which result convincing in the analysis and vindicate “semi-symbolism” as an operational instrument, show their independent nature, signaling a precise definition of the concept. The general conclusion of this study could be that “semi-symbolism” works simply as a label, with all the virtues of every label (fixing ideas, serving pedagogy, etc.), but also with all its imperfections (such as the risk of emptiness, the temptation of a lovely repetition, the eagerness to fix a formal reference in a current of thought). In this context, a label can always be rebuilt, insofar it is given an incontestable theoretical status and an irrefutable heuristic capacity.Bajo este título provocador, se pretende discernir la pertinencia teórica y la eficacia práctica de un concepto muy usado en semiótica de la imagen: el «semisimbolismo». Surgió, precisamente, de una reflexión sobre la imagen y se extrapoló a varios campos, comenzando por el de la teoría, donde, por cierto, no ha encontrado un lugar epistemológico incontestable. En cuanto a su empleo en los análisis, no se ha demostrado que el uso generalizado del concepto, al menos por periodos, contribuya a su mayor claridad o a unas conclusiones más sólidas, antes, al contrario, su utilización laxa debilita tanto lo uno como lo otro. En cambio, en lo que respecta a las conclusiones sólidas que se muestran convincentes en los análisis, reivindicando el «semisimbolismo» como instrumento operacional, pronto queda de manifiesto su independencia, incluso, de una definición precisa del concepto. La conclusión podría ser que el «semisimbolismo» funciona simplemente como una etiqueta, con las virtudes de toda etiqueta (fijar ideas, servir a la pedagogía), por supuesto, pero sobre todo con sus defectos (como el riesgo de vacuidad, la tentación de la repetición encantadora, el afán de fijar una referencia formal en una escuela de pensamiento). Siempre se puede regenerar una etiqueta, con la condición de que se le dé un estatus teórico incontestable y una capacidad heurística irrefutable

Effective population size of Anopheles funestus chromosomal forms in Burkina Faso

BACKGROUND: As Anopheles funestus is one of the principal Afro-tropical malaria vectors, a more complete understanding of its population structure is desirable. In West and Central Africa, An. funestus population structure is complicated by the coexistence of two assortatively mating chromosomal forms. Effective population size (N(e)) is a key parameter in understanding patterns and levels of intraspecific variation, as it reflects the role of genetic drift. Here, N(e )was estimated from both chromosomal forms, Kiribina and Folonzo, in Burkina Faso. METHODS: Short-term N(e )was estimated by evaluating variation at 16 microsatellite loci across temporal samples collected annually from 2000–2002. Estimates were based on standardized variance in allele frequencies or a maximum likelihood method. Long-term N(e )was estimated from genetic diversity estimates using mtDNA sequences and microsatellites. RESULTS: For both forms, short-term and long-term N(e )estimates were on the order of 10(3 )and 10(5), respectively. Long-term N(e )estimates were larger when based on loci from chromosome 3R (both inside and outside of inversions) than loci outside of this arm. CONCLUSION: N(e )values indicate that An. funestus is not subject to seasonal bottlenecks. Though not statistically different because of large and overlapping confidence intervals, short-term N(e )estimates were consistently smaller for Kiribina than Folonzo, possibly due to exploitation of different breeding sites: permanent for Folonzo and intermittent for Kiribina. The higher long-term N(e )estimates on 3R, the arm carrying the two inversions mainly responsible for defining the chromosomal forms, give natural selection broader scope and merit further study

Confidence-based Reasoning in Stochastic Constraint Programming

In this work we introduce a novel approach, based on sampling, for finding assignments that are likely to be solutions to stochastic constraint satisfaction problems and constraint optimisation problems. Our approach reduces the size of the original problem being analysed; by solving this reduced problem, with a given confidence probability, we obtain assignments that satisfy the chance constraints in the original model within prescribed error tolerance thresholds. To achieve this, we blend concepts from stochastic constraint programming and statistics. We discuss both exact and approximate variants of our method. The framework we introduce can be immediately employed in concert with existing approaches for solving stochastic constraint programs. A thorough computational study on a number of stochastic combinatorial optimisation problems demonstrates the effectiveness of our approach.Comment: 53 pages, working draf

A First Search for coincident Gravitational Waves and High Energy Neutrinos using LIGO, Virgo and ANTARES data from 2007

We present the results of the first search for gravitational wave bursts associated with high energy neutrinos. Together, these messengers could reveal new, hidden sources that are not observed by conventional photon astronomy, particularly at high energy. Our search uses neutrinos detected by the underwater neutrino telescope ANTARES in its 5 line configuration during the period January - September 2007, which coincided with the fifth and first science runs of LIGO and Virgo, respectively. The LIGO-Virgo data were analysed for candidate gravitational-wave signals coincident in time and direction with the neutrino events. No significant coincident events were observed. We place limits on the density of joint high energy neutrino - gravitational wave emission events in the local universe, and compare them with densities of merger and core-collapse events.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, science summary page at http://www.ligo.org/science/Publication-S5LV_ANTARES/index.php.
