    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to estimate the genetic base of Brazilian irrigated rice cultivars released in the period from 1965 to 2012. The genealogies of the cultivars were obtained based on information from marketing folders, websites, crossings records, and scientific articles. The following factors were calculated: relative genetic contribution (RGC), accumulated genetic contribution (AGC), frequency (in percentage) of each ancestor in the genealogy (FAG), number of ancestors that constitute each cultivar (NAC),number of ancestors responsible for 60%, 70%, 80% and 90% of the genetic base (NAGB), and average number of ancestor per cultivar (ANAC). The cultivars were also grouped based on the period of release (1965-1980, 1981-1990, 1991-2000 and 2001-2012). For each grouping, the previously described factors were also estimated. A total of 110 cultivars were studied and it was concluded that the genetic base of Brazilian irrigated rice cultivars is narrow

Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) Phase 4 (2018): Change management in allergic rhinitis and asthma multimorbidity using mobile technology

    Get PDF
Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) has evolved from a guideline by using the best approach to integrated care pathways using mobile technology in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma multimorbidity. The proposed next phase of ARIA is change management, with the aim of providing an active and healthy life to patients with rhinitis and to those with asthma multimorbidity across the lifecycle irrespective of their sex or socioeconomic status to reduce health and social inequities incurred by the disease. ARIA has followed the 8-step model of Kotter to assess and implement the effect of rhinitis on asthma multimorbidity and to propose multimorbid guidelines. A second change management strategy is proposed by ARIA Phase 4 to increase self-medication and shared decision making in rhinitis and asthma multimorbidity. An innovation of ARIA has been the development and validation of information technology evidence-based tools (Mobile Airways Sentinel Network [MASK]) that can inform patient decisions on the basis of a self-care plan proposed by the health care professional

Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Objective. This cross-sectional study assessed the prevalence and severity of the enamel defects, known as Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) and its relationship to dental caries. Materials and methods. A sample of 1157 schoolchildren (population based), aged 6-12 years, of the Araraquara city-Brazil, was evaluated according to the European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry (EAPD) criteria by two trained examiners. The dental impact caused by MIH was evaluated with the Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth (DMFT) index (WHO). Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Chi-square tests (p < 0.05). The socioeconomic status was collected using a questionnaire answered by parents. Results. The prevalence of MIH was 12.3%. Mild impairment was the most frequent diagnosis. DMFT of children with MIH was 0.89 (+/- 1.18), which are higher than those of the unaffected group (0.43 +/- 1.01). An association was found between dental caries only in the permanent dentition of children with MIH (p = 0.0001). Family income was considered low in 85% of the families of children with MIH in the public system, while in private school it was 18% (p < 0.05). Conclusion. The prevalence of MIH in Araraquara was associated with greater caries experience in the permanent dentition.7141732870876Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq

RAPD and SCAR markers linked to resistance to frogeye leaf spot in soybean

The soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) frogeye leaf spot is caused by the fungus Cercospora sojina Hara and is a widespread disease in Brazil and other countries, causing severe losses in grain yield and also affecting seed quality. The availability of DNA markers linked to genes for resistance to this disease would accelerate breeding programs, particularly when other traits are also being evaluated. Bulked segregant analysis was applied to 3 F2 populations derived from crosses between the resistant cultivars Parana, Cristalina and Uberaba, and the susceptible cultivar Bossier. In the cross 'Parana' x 'Bossier', 2 RAPD markers were identified, CSOPA1(800C) and CSOPA2(1,250C), located at 4.4 ± 1.8 centiMorgans (cM) and 3.4 ± 1.7 cM respectively from the resistance locus. DNA fragments of similar molecular weight were observed in the population derived from the cross 'Cristalina' x 'Bossier' at 2.3 ± 1.2 and 4.7 ± 1.5 cM from the resistance locus, respectively. In the offspring of the cross 'Uberaba' x 'Bossier', a DNA fragment corresponding to marker CSOPA1(800C) was detected at 5.6 ± 2.1 cM from the resistance locus. Although marker CSOPA2(1,250C) was not observed in this population, an additional marker was detected (CSOUB1(1,100C)) at 6.7 ± 2.2 cM from the resistance locus. The 1,250 bp fragment of CSOPA2(1,250C) was cloned and converted into a SCAR marker, which amplified a single fragment whose size corresponded to the cloned segment of the crosses involving cultivars Cristalina and Parana. Markers CSOPA1(800C), CSOPA2(1,250C) and CSOUB1(1,100C) were mapped to soybean linkage group J with the aid of known SSRs linked to the Rcs3 locus, indicating that the RAPD and SCAR markers identified in our research also tag this resistance gene

Pusher, or lateropulsion, syndrome is a clinical disorder following brain damage in which patients actively push away from the nonhemiparetic side, leading to a loss of postural balance. This study analysed the effect of hydrotherapy on trunk alignment in a 78 year-old male patient with the syndrome. Pusher syndrome was diagnosed by means of the scale for contraversive pushing. Trunk symmetry was assessed by photogrammetry: head, shoulder and trunk alignment angles were measured on photographs taken before and after treatment. Aquatic therapy consisted in two weekly one-hour sessions for two months (total 16 sessions), using the Bad Ragaz and the Halliwick techniques, with the purpose of strengthening upper limb and trunk muscles, respectively. The post-treatment assessment showed an important reduction in tilt angles of head (from 31.7º to 10.6º), shoulders (from 10.3º to 1.7º), and trunk alignment (from 9.6º to 3.0º). The hydrotherapy program proposed thus showed beneficial in assuring the patient with pusher syndrome better trunk symmetry and alignment
