    Equipo para el lavado ecológico del café con mucílago degradado con fermentación natural

    Se evaluó un lavador de flujo vertical ascendente de granos de café y descarga radial de fluidos. Se utilizó un diseño factorial 2x3, dos flujos de café lavado (1.250 y 1.750 kg.h-1) y tres caudales de agua (3, 4 y 5 L.min-1), con 5 unidades experimentales por tratamiento. El mejor desempeño del equipo se obtuvo con flujo de café lavado de 1.750 kg.h-1 y caudal de agua de 5 L.min-1, alcanzando remoción de mucílago de 95,11%, consumo específico de agua de 0,32 L.kg cps-1, daño mecánico de 0,51% y potencia específica de 1,01 W.h. kg-1de café lavado./ An up-flow coffee-bean washer with radial fluids discharge was evaluated following a 2 by 3 factorial design; two washed coffee bean flow rates (1.250 and 1.750 kg.h-1) and three water flow rates (3, 4 and 5 L.min-1), with 5 experimental units per treatment.     Diagnóstico de la comunicación rural en Colombia.

    El objetivo es conocer el estado actual de la investigación realizada en el país sobre comunicación rural y las necesidades de investigación para transferencia de tecnología agropecuaria según los agentes de cambio del ICA. El trabajo se inició con la conformación de un grupo multidisciplinario integrado por funcionarios del ICA, profesionales en agronomía, medicina veterinaria, comunicación social y economía del hogar. Se recolectaron 171 investigaciones sobre comunicación rural de las cuales se eliminaron 43 debido a que no encajaban dentro de los criterios establecidos para el análisis, haciéndose sobre 128 trabajos. Con base en los resultados y discusión se presentan las siguientes conclusiones : Es poca la investigación sobre el análisis de la fuente o emisor en cuanto a sus actividades y capacidad para actuar como tal. En cuanto al mensaje no se observa una clara tendencia hacia el estudio del mismo. Existe muy poca investigación sobre formas y medios de comunicación individuales y de grupos, en contraste con los estudios sobre medios masivos. La mayoría de las investigaciones sobre medios han sido realizadas por ACPO. La investigación en comunicación se ha ocupado preferencialmente del pequeño agricultor, usuario atendido con asistencia técnica oficial. Los trabajos se han encaminado a determinar la adopción de prácticas, el planeamiento de la comunicación, el análisis interno e impacto de la comunicación. En la región Andina se concentra la mayor parte de los estudios. El ICA es la institución que ha realizado mayor número de investigaciones en comunicación rural principalmente, en las áreas cubiertas por sus Distritos de Transferencia de Tecnología, le siguen en su orden las universidades, el Programa de Estudios para Graduados UN-ICA y ACP

    The Milky Way Bulge: Observed properties and a comparison to external galaxies

    The Milky Way bulge offers a unique opportunity to investigate in detail the role that different processes such as dynamical instabilities, hierarchical merging, and dissipational collapse may have played in the history of the Galaxy formation and evolution based on its resolved stellar population properties. Large observation programmes and surveys of the bulge are providing for the first time a look into the global view of the Milky Way bulge that can be compared with the bulges of other galaxies, and be used as a template for detailed comparison with models. The Milky Way has been shown to have a box/peanut (B/P) bulge and recent evidence seems to suggest the presence of an additional spheroidal component. In this review we summarise the global chemical abundances, kinematics and structural properties that allow us to disentangle these multiple components and provide constraints to understand their origin. The investigation of both detailed and global properties of the bulge now provide us with the opportunity to characterise the bulge as observed in models, and to place the mixed component bulge scenario in the general context of external galaxies. When writing this review, we considered the perspectives of researchers working with the Milky Way and researchers working with external galaxies.     Acceptability and feasibility of a virtual community of practice to primary care professionals regarding patient empowerment : A qualitative pilot study

    Background: Virtual communities of practice (vCoPs) facilitate online learning via the exchange of experiences and knowledge between interested participants. Compared to other communities, vCoPs need to overcome technological structures and specific barriers. Our objective was to pilot the acceptability and feasibility of a vCoP aimed at improving the attitudes of primary care professionals to the empowerment of patients with chronic conditions. Methods: We used a qualitative approach based on 2 focus groups: one composed of 6 general practitioners and the other of 6 practice nurses. Discussion guidelines on the topics to be investigated were provided to the moderator. Sessions were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis was performed using the ATLAS-ti software. Results: The available operating systems and browsers and the lack of suitable spaces and time were reported as the main difficulties with the vCoP. The vCoP was perceived to be a flexible learning mode that provided up-to-date resources applicable to routine practice and offered a space for the exchange of experiences and approaches. Conclusions: The results from this pilot study show that the vCoP was considered useful for learning how to empower patients. However, while vCoPs have the potential to facilitate learning and as shown create professional awareness regarding patient empowerment, attention needs to be paid to technological and access issues and the time demands on professionals. We collected relevant inputs to improve the features, content and educational methods to be included in further vCoP implementation. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02757781.     Transverse momentum spectra of charged particles in proton-proton collisions at s=900\sqrt{s} = 900 GeV with ALICE at the LHC

    The inclusive charged particle transverse momentum distribution is measured in proton-proton collisions at s=900\sqrt{s} = 900 GeV at the LHC using the ALICE detector. The measurement is performed in the central pseudorapidity region (η<0.8)(|\eta|<0.8) over the transverse momentum range 0.15<pT<100.15<p_{\rm T}<10 GeV/cc. The correlation between transverse momentum and particle multiplicity is also studied. Results are presented for inelastic (INEL) and non-single-diffractive (NSD) events. The average transverse momentum for η<0.8|\eta|<0.8 is <pT>INEL=0.483±0.001\left<p_{\rm T}\right>_{\rm INEL}=0.483\pm0.001 (stat.) ±0.007\pm0.007 (syst.) GeV/cc and \left_{\rm NSD}=0.489\pm0.001 (stat.) ±0.007\pm0.007 (syst.) GeV/cc, respectively. The data exhibit a slightly larger <pT>\left<p_{\rm T}\right> than measurements in wider pseudorapidity intervals.     International nosocomial infection control consortium (INICC) report, data summary of 36 countries, for 2004-2009

    The results of a surveillance study conducted by the International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortium (INICC) from January 2004 through December 2009 in 422 intensive care units (ICUs) of 36 countries in Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Europe are reported. During the 6-year study period, using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN; formerly the National Nosocomial Infection Surveillance system [NNIS]) definitions for device-associated health care-associated infections, we gathered prospective data from 313,008 patients hospitalized in the consortium's ICUs for an aggregate of 2,194,897 ICU bed-days. Despite the fact that the use of devices in the developing countries' ICUs was remarkably similar to that reported in US ICUs in the CDC's NHSN, rates of device-associated nosocomial infection were significantly higher in the ICUs of the INICC hospitals; the pooled rate of central line-associated bloodstream infection in the INICC ICUs of 6.8 per 1,000 central line-days was more than 3-fold higher than the 2.0 per 1,000 central line-days reported in comparable US ICUs. The overall rate of ventilator-associated pneumonia also was far higher (15.8 vs 3.3 per 1,000 ventilator-days), as was the rate of catheter-associated urinary tract infection (6.3 vs. 3.3 per 1,000 catheter-days). Notably, the frequencies of resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates to imipenem (47.2% vs 23.0%), Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates to ceftazidime (76.3% vs 27.1%), Escherichia coli isolates to ceftazidime (66.7% vs 8.1%), Staphylococcus aureus isolates to methicillin (84.4% vs 56.8%), were also higher in the consortium's ICUs, and the crude unadjusted excess mortalities of device-related infections ranged from 7.3% (for catheter-associated urinary tract infection) to 15.2% (for ventilator-associated pneumonia).     Bioprospecting of aerobic endospore-forming bacteria with biotechnological potential for growth promotion of banana plants

    High amounts of agrochemicals are regularly used for increasing yields in cultivation of banana. The use of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) could represent an environmentally friendly alternative that can improve productivity. In this study, we tested a funnel-like strategy to bioprospect aerobic endospore-forming bacteria (AEFB) that could be useful to develop a biotechnological product to promote the growth of banana plants. First, 837 aerobic endospore-forming bacteria were obtained from the rhizosphere of banana and plantain. Then, the isolates were assessed for both: their capacity to promote growth of maize seedlings (used as a model plant) and to display specific biochemical PGPR-associated traits. Twenty-two of these strains significantly increased the dry weight of maize seedlings, some of them showing in vitro PGPR traits. Based on this screening, four isolates were selected to conduct evaluations on banana plants, from which, the bacterial strain Bacillus subtilis EA-CB0575 was chosen as a promising plant growth -promoting isolate. Further studies with this strain showed that the application of either spores, vegetative cells (both at concentrations 1 x 10(7) and 1 x 10(8) CFU/mL), or the cell-free supernatant (CFS) of its fermentation significantly increased the dry weight of banana plants, compared with the non-treated control. Our results suggest that both cellular structures of B. subtilis EA-CB0575 and the metabolites and/or elements contained in its CFS enhance the growth and development of banana plants.
