Comparison of the climatic conditions and tomato crop productivity in Mediterranean greenhouses under two different natural ventilation management systems

    Get PDF
This study was based on experiments with a tomato crop, carried out in two Mediterranean unheated greenhouses, located at the Instituto Superior of Agronomia, Lisbon. The main objective was to compare the behaviour of internal air parameters such as air temperature and relative humidity and the likelihood of condensation on the greenhouse cover in two greenhouses with different management of natural ventilation. The influence of the internal climate on plant development and productivity was also determined by the number of opened flowers and set fruits per truss, and also the harvest rate. One greenhouse had permanent ventilation (PV) during the day and night while the other had classical ventilation (CV), in which the vents were closed during the night and open during the day. During the growing season, measurements were made of dry and wet bulb air temperatures, plastic cover temperature, plant temperature, global radiation, PAR radiation, soil temperature and wind speed, and recorded using a data logger. Also, information on the evolution of the crop was recorded. Internal air temperature, relative humidity and water vapour pressure deficit data were analysed and compared between the two greenhouses. Dew point temperature was computed and compared with the plastic cover temperature to find out if, and when, condensation occurred. Ventilation rates were estimated and related to internal air conditions. he relative humidity was lower in the PV greenhouse during the night due to the higher ventilation rate. Condensation on the plastic cover was more severe in the CV greenhouse and inversions of the air temperature were also more frequent. Lethally low temperatures did not occur in either of the greenhouses. The PV greenhouse had a higher tomato fruit production but this difference was not statistically significant. On the CV greenhouse the harvest started one week earlier due to heat accumulation after closing the vents in the afternoon

Crystallization of the ordered vortex phase in high temperature superconductors

The Landau-Khalatnikov time-dependent equation is applied to describe the crystallization process of the ordered vortex lattice in high temperature superconductors after a sudden application of a magnetic field. Dynamic coexistence of a stable ordered phase and an unstable disordered phase, with a sharp interface between them, is demonstrated. The transformation to the equilibrium ordered state proceeds by movement of this interface from the sample center toward its edge. The theoretical analysis dictates specific conditions for the creation of a propagating interface, and provides the time scale for this process.Comment: 8 pages and 3 figures; to be published in Phys. The Q2Q^2-dependence of the generalised Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integral for the deuteron, proton and neutron

The Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule connects the anomalous contribution to the magnetic moment of the target nucleus with an energy-weighted integral of the difference of the helicity-dependent photoabsorption cross sections. The data collected by HERMES with a deuterium target are presented together with a re-analysis of previous measurements on the proton. This provides a measurement of the generalised GDH integral covering simultaneously the nucleon-resonance and the deep inelastic scattering regions. The contribution of the nucleon-resonance region is seen to decrease rapidly with increasing Q2Q^2. The DIS contribution is sizeable over the full measured range, even down to the lowest measured Q2Q^2. As expected, at higher Q2Q^2 the data are found to be in agreement with previous measurements of the first moment of g1g_1. From data on the deuteron and proton, the GDH integral for the neutron has been derived and the proton--neutron difference evaluated. This difference is found to satisfy the fundamental Bjorken sum rule at Q2=5Q^2 = 5 GeV2^2.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure

Subleading-twist effects in single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering on a longitudinally polarized hydrogen target

    Get PDF
Single-spin asymmetries in the semi-inclusive production of charged pions in deep-inelastic scattering from transversely and longitudinally polarized proton targets are combined to evaluate the subleading-twist contribution to the longitudinal case. This contribution is significantly positive for (\pi^+) mesons and dominates the asymmetries on a longitudinally polarized target previously measured by \hermes. The subleading-twist contribution for (\pi^-) mesons is found to be small

Measurement of single-spin azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive electroproduction of pions and kaons on a longitudinally polarised deuterium target

    Get PDF
    Single-spin asymmetries have been measured for semi-inclusive electroproduction of π+\pi^+, π\pi^-, π0\pi^0 and K+K^+ mesons in deep-inelastic scattering off a longitudinally polarised deuterium target. The asymmetries appear in the distribution of the hadrons in the azimuthal angle ϕ\phi around the virtual photon direction, relative to the lepton scattering plane. The corresponding analysing powers in the sinϕ\sin \phi moment of the cross section are 0.012±0.002(stat.)±0.002(syst.)0.012 \pm 0.002 {(stat.)} \pm 0.002 {(syst.)} for π+\pi^+, 0.006±0.003(stat.)±0.002(syst.)0.006 \pm 0.003 {(stat.)} \pm 0.002 {(syst.)} for π\pi^-, 0.021±0.005(stat.)±0.003(syst.)0.021 \pm 0.005 {(stat.)} \pm 0.003 {(syst.)} for π0\pi^0 and 0.013±0.006(stat.)±0.003(syst.)0.013 \pm 0.006 {(stat.)} \pm 0.003 {(syst.)} for K+K^+. The sin2ϕ\sin 2\phi moments are compatible with zero for all particles.Comment: Revised version shortened 9 pages, 3 tables, 7 figure

Observation of hard scattering in photoproduction events with a large rapidity gap at HERA

    Get PDF
Events with a large rapidity gap and total transverse energy greater than 5 GeV have been observed in quasi-real photoproduction at HERA with the ZEUS detector. The distribution of these events as a function of the γp\gamma p centre of mass energy is consistent with diffractive scattering. For total transverse energies above 12 GeV, the hadronic final states show predominantly a two-jet structure with each jet having a transverse energy greater than 4 GeV. For the two-jet events, little energy flow is found outside the jets. This observation is consistent with the hard scattering of a quasi-real photon with a colourless object in the proton.Comment: 19 pages, latex, 4 figures appended as uuencoded fil

Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS

    Get PDF
The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes. This is interpreted as the chi_b(3P) system.Comment: 5 pages plus author list (18 pages total), 2 figures, 1 table, corrected author list, matches final version in Physical Review Letter

Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    Get PDF
We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a significant distance from their production point into a final state containing charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the neutralino lifetime. Limits are presented for different squark and neutralino masses, enabling extension of the limits to a variety of other models.Comment: 8 pages plus author list (20 pages total), 8 figures, 1 table, final version to appear in Physics Letters

Reducing heterotic M-theory to five dimensional supergravity on a manifold with boundary

    Get PDF
This paper constructs the reduction of heterotic MM-theory in eleven dimensions to a supergravity model on a manifold with boundary in five dimensions using a Calabi-Yau three-fold. New results are presented for the boundary terms in the action and for the boundary conditions on the bulk fields. Some general features of dualisation on a manifold with boundary are used to explain the origin of some topological terms in the action. The effect of gaugino condensation on the fermion boundary conditions leads to a `twist' in the chirality of the gravitino which can provide an uplifting mechanism in the vacuum energy to cancel the cosmological constant after moduli stabilisation.Comment: 16 pages, RevTe

Measurement of the inclusive isolated prompt photon cross-section in pp collisions at sqrt(s)= 7 TeV using 35 pb-1 of ATLAS data

    Get PDF
A measurement of the differential cross-section for the inclusive production of isolated prompt photons in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is presented. The measurement covers the pseudorapidity ranges |eta|<1.37 and 1.52<=|eta|<2.37 in the transverse energy range 45<=E_T<400GeV. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 35 pb-1, collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The yields of the signal photons are measured using a data-driven technique, based on the observed distribution of the hadronic energy in a narrow cone around the photon candidate and the photon selection criteria. The results are compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations and found to be in good agreement over four orders of magnitude in cross-section.Comment: 7 pages plus author list (18 pages total), 2 figures, 4 tables, final version published in Physics Letters
