Abstract: Difficulties in reading ability are a significant feature of dyslexia, causing alterations in the cognitive and psychosocial processes of diagnosed student, alter school performance and interpersonal relationships, therefore, demands responsible and qualified actions by teachers. This work is intended to describe the process of evaluation, intervention and monitoring of a sequence of activities for the improvement of reading competence in a student diagnosed with dyslexia. Specifically, this case study presents the results obtained in the reader diagnosis of a 13-year-old student carried out through the PROLEC-SE test, as well as the program of activities designed to improve reading proficiency. The results showed that the student presents difficulties in the syntactic process and in the semantic process, which directly affect the reading. As a main conclusion, a greater involvement in the teaching-learning process and a more adjusted knowledge of the difficulties presented by the dyslexic student by the teacher should be highlighted

Blood cholesterol and lipid-lowering effects of carrageenan on human volunteers

Algal polysaccharides such as carrageenan are good sources of dietary fibre. Previous studies have shown that carrageenan has hypoglycemic effects, but its cholesterol and lipid-lowering effects have yet to be demonstrated. In this study, carrageenan was incorporated into 4 food items, then fed to 20 human volunteers to determine its effects on blood cholesterol and lipid levels. The study followed a randomized crossover design. Each phase of the study -control and experimental -lasted for 8 weeks separated by a 2-week washout. At control, the subjects consumed their usual food intake; at experimental, they were given test foods with carrageenan partly substituting similar items in their usual diet. Fasting venous blood samples were collected immediately before and after each phase to assay serum cholesterol and triglyceride. The mean serum cholesterol was significantly lower (P < 0.0014) after the experimental phase at 3.64 mmol/L compared with the mean level after the control phase, 5.44 mmol/L. The mean triglyceride level after the experimental phase, 0.87 mmol/L, was significantly lower (P < 0.0006) in comparison to the level after the control phase, 1.28 mmol/L. The mean HDL cholesterol level significantly increased (P < 0.0071) after the experimental phase at 1.65 mmol/L compared to the mean value after the control phase, 1.25 mmol/L. No significant differences were observed between the LDL cholesterol levels after the experimental and the control phases. This study indicates that regular inclusion of carrageenan in the diet may result in reduced blood cholesterol and lipid levels in human subjects

Guinea pig models for translation of the developmental origins of health and disease hypothesis into the clinic

Over 30 years ago Professor David Barker first proposed the theory that events in early life could explain an individual\u27s risk of non-communicable disease in later life: the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) hypothesis. During the 1990s the validity of the DOHaD hypothesis was extensively tested in a number of human populations and the mechanisms underpinning it characterised in a range of experimental animal models. Over the past decade, researchers have sought to use this mechanistic understanding of DOHaD to develop therapeutic interventions during pregnancy and early life to improve adult health. A variety of animal models have been used to develop and evaluate interventions, each with strengths and limitations. It is becoming apparent that effective translational research requires that the animal paradigm selected mirrors the tempo of human fetal growth and development as closely as possible so that the effect of a perinatal insult and/or therapeutic intervention can be fully assessed. The guinea pig is one such animal model that over the past two decades has demonstrated itself to be a very useful platform for these important reproductive studies. This review highlights similarities in the in utero development between humans and guinea pigs, the strengths and limitations of the guinea pig as an experimental model of DOHaD and the guinea pig\u27s potential to enhance clinical therapeutic innovation to improve human health. Dengue virus infection is a leading cause of morbidity among children in the Philippines in recent years. In order to investigate the association of HLA Class I and II alleles and dengue disease severity in a cohort of Filipino children, we performed a case control study in 2 hospitals in Metro Manila from June 2008 to December 2009. A total of 250 laboratory confirmed dengue patients and 300 healthy individuals aged 5 to 15 years old were typed for HLA-A, B and DRB1 alleles. The frequency of HLA-A*33:01 was significantly decreased in severe dengue (DHF/ DSS; Pc = 0.0016)) and DSS (Pc = 0.0032) compared to the background population. These findings support a previous study that this allele may confer protection against the severe form of dengue and provide the first evidence of HLA association with dengue in the Philippines. Future studies should be directed in investigating the possible mechanisms of protection.長崎大学学位論文 学位記番号:博(医歯薬)乙第39号 学位授与年月日:平成27年6月3日Author: Edelwisa Segubre Mercado, Fe Esperanza Espino, Ma. The Role of Astrocyte-Derived Factors in the Regulation of Multidrug Resistance at the Developing Blood-Brain Barrier

P-glycoprotein (P-gp; encoded by Abcb1) at the blood-brain barrier (BBB) plays an important role in regulating the movement of exogenous and endogenous substrates into the developing brain. P-gp levels in brain endothelial cells (BECs), which form the capillaries of the BBB, increase dramatically in late gestation and early post-natal life. During this period, glial precursors differentiate into astrocytes and begin to ensheathe brain microvessels. However, little is known regarding the effect of astrocytes on Abcb1/P-gp at the developing BBB. This thesis investigated the effects of astrocyte-derived factors on regulating Abcb1/P-gp at the developing BBB. In particular, the studies in this thesis demonstrated the upregulatory effect of transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-β1), a growth factor secreted by astrocytes in late gestation, on P-gp at the BBB. This effect was attenuated as gestation progressed. During this time in pregnancy, it is common for women to receive synthetic glucocorticoids (sGC). This thesis has demonstrated that sGC treatment matures the BBB as it increases P-gp and tight junction function. These BECs also display attenuated responsiveness to TGF-β1 stimulation, an effect similar to that seen in post-natal guinea pig BECs obtained following normal pregnancies. By utilizing a co-culture model using guinea pig BECs and astrocytes from two distinct time-points in gestation, the studies in this thesis have demonstrated that astrocytes enhance levels of Abcb1 mRNA and P-gp function in BECs via astrocyte-derived factors. However, post-natal astrocytes induce a more prominent increase in P-gp at the developing BBB compared to fetal astrocytes. This effect was correlated with higher levels of secreted proteins by post-natal astrocytes compared to fetal astrocytes. Thus, compromised astrocyte maturation may dysregulate P-gp function and expression at the BBB, which may contribute to the pathogenesis of neurodevelopmental disorders. This new knowledge will be critical in the development of future therapies to counteract these effects.Ph.D.2018-06-23 00:00:0

Strict Prime-Intersective Polynomials for a Fixed Prime Number

In this thesis, we examine intersective polynomials, which are polynomials with integer coefficients that have a root modulo any positive integer greater than 1. For any prime number p, a p-intersective polynomial is a polynomial with integer coefficients which has a root in Zp. We define a special type of p-intersective polynomial called strict p-intersective polynomial that can be factored as the product of a p-intersective polynomial and an irreducible polynomial mod p. The main results include methods of construction of strict p-intersective polynomials for certain prime numbers p and enumeration of such polynomials of certain degrees. Chapter 1 gives the history and background of intersective polyomials. In Chapter 2, we explore irreducible polynomials over the field Zp, where p is prime. Those pintersective polynomials of degree ≤ 5 for p = 2, 3 and 5 are investigated. In chapter 3, we analyze strict p-intersective polynomials with focus on counting the number of polynomials over Zp that are strict p-intersective. The chapter ends with constructing and enumerating p-intersective polynomials with degrees 3,4, and 5. Lastly, we construct some special p-intersective and intersective polynomials in chapter 4
