The History of Nicolas Pedrosa, and His Escape from the Inquisition in Madrid. A Tale.

Andalusian-born Nicolas Pedrosa is a shaver, surgeon, and male-midwife living in Madrid. One day, after assisting in a birth, Nicolas is returning home when his mule becomes obstreperous and he beats it, rejecting the offered advice of a group of passing friars who counsel patience. Angered by Pedrosa\u27s reaction, the friars sweep on only to be trampled when the mule loses control because of the sound of their bells. The next morning, Pedrosa receives a summons from the Inquisition, an especially worrisome situation for him as he is secretly a Jew. Imprisoned and tortured briefly, Pedrosa The interrogation by the Inquisitor General (Don Ignacio de Santos Apparicio, a name with obvious associations to the Jesuit Ignatius) is ended when Pedrosa reveals that he had been returning from the childbed of a woman named Donna Leonora as the Inquisitor General takes Pedrosa aside and commissions him to slip a vial of what he claims is medicine to Donna Leonora. Suspicious of the Inquisitor General\u27s motives, Pedrosa flees to Portugal and accepts employment as a ship\u27s surgeon. Under the tutelage of the British captain, Pedrosa experiences freedom from fear of the Inquisition and is able to act to save Don Manuel, the husband of Donna Leonora, who is captured and brought aboard the ship. Though initially skeptical, Don Manuel is persuaded of the Inquisitor General\u27s evil intent when he receives a letter written by the dying Leonora. Pedrosa and Don Manuel go to England. Once there, they receive word that the Inquisitor General has either disappeared or is dead so a return home would be safe. Pedrosa is happier, however, living in glorious and tolerant England where he can live as a Jew without fear of the Inquisition.https://epublications.marquette.edu/english_gothic/1008/thumbnail.jp

Need Economic Development be Hazardous to the Health of the Chesapeake Bay?

This paper adds environmental and mass balance relationships to an economic model in order to explore the welfare implications of alternative patterns of regional development. It concludes that improvements in welfare can be achieved by selecting those types of economic activity which yield high ratios of economic benefit per unit of pollution generated. Methods are examined for achieving selectivity in designing economic development programs to capture the benefits of development while protecting environmental resources.Community/Rural/Urban Development, Environmental Economics and Policy, Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

    Wavelength extension in speciality fibres

    No full text
Since the invention of the laser and its first application, there has been an almost continuous stream of new applications - many of which require specific laser sources. These applications often require a laser source with a specific power, pulse duration, energy and wavelength. In some cases these demands are easily met, whilst in others they have proven rather more difficult to achieve. Traditionally, wavelength versatility has been limited to the regions for which rare earth or gas gain media are available. These lasers themselves can be used to generate other wavelengths through the nonlinear processes of second and third harmonic generation, as well as sum frequency generation. Despite all of this, there still exists a significant section of the visible and infrared spectrum for which no convenient sources exist. This thesis is concerned with the development of sources in these regions along with broadband sources covering significant portions of the spectrum by themselves. These new wavelengths are generated in a variety of speciality fibres using either nonlinear processes or new gain media doped into standard silica fibres. Three types of speciality fibre are used: low concentration bismuth doped fibre which provides gain in the 1.0-1.4 ÎŒm region; photonic crystal fibres; and very high (75%) concentration germanium fibres to generate a laser source at 2.1 ÎŒm based upon stimulated Raman scattering. Photonic crystal fibres provide high nonlinearities and controllable dispersion which enables the generation of broadband supercontinuum sources based upon the interaction of many nonlinear effects. Each source will be described in depth, with particular attention given to the underlying physics that gives rise to the source. Previous and current limitations will be examined and an outlook of the future development of such sources will be discussed

Sensible Signs: Pictures and Not Painting After Conceptual Art

This PhD by published work contributes to debates regarding aesthetics versus art history and theory. It provides a contextual review of anti-aesthetic legacies of pop and conceptual art developing from an understanding of modern art as de-humanized. The research is concerned with why, how and what to paint after conceptual art and proceeds by making a distinction between postconceptual painting and a return to painting. These themes are tested in the first of two of the author’s solo exhibitions titled ‘Four Circle Paintings’. The show consisted of lo-fi mechanical mono-chrome copies of gestural painting and promotes a conclusion that the label postconceptual painting is applied to artworks that are representations of painting and as such are not real painting. The thesis argues that in its urgency to distinguish itself from (authentic) painting, postconceptual painting demonstrates a contradictory appeal to aesthetics, which prevents the artwork from becoming merely a sign. Therefore, at risk of the same return to painting, the postconceptual painter values sensibility with the intention that the “fake” painting––or sign––is vexed by a ‘real’ aesthetic. In an attempt to circumnavigate the requirement to validate medium, the second exhibition titled ‘Handmade Colour Pictures’ argues for a categorical shift from the making of ‘paintings’ to ‘pictures’. The show consisted of eight mid-sized works, using painting conventions––oil paint on primed linen stretched over rectangular frames––to produce images, derived from a hunting theme, that brought attention to their own pictorial conditions. The author, having outlined visual attention as a premeditated motivation, concludes that the “there” and “not there” quality of the picture that must be consciously switched between to see it as either image or object, provides an “experience of meaning” that is significant for the artwork in its distinction from an anti-aesthetic dominance of rationality

A stochastic multi-scale model of HIV-1 transmission for decision-making: application to a MSM population.

BackgroundIn the absence of an effective vaccine against HIV-1, the scientific community is presented with the challenge of developing alternative methods to curb its spread. Due to the complexity of the disease, however, our ability to predict the impact of various prevention and treatment strategies is limited. While ART has been widely accepted as the gold standard of modern care, its timing is debated.ObjectivesTo evaluate the impact of medical interventions at the level of individuals on the spread of infection across the whole population. Specifically, we investigate the impact of ART initiation timing on HIV-1 spread in an MSM (Men who have Sex with Men) population.Design and methodsA stochastic multi-scale model of HIV-1 transmission that integrates within a single framework the in-host cellular dynamics and their outcomes, patient health states, and sexual contact networks. The model captures disease state and progression within individuals, and allows for simulation of therapeutic strategies.ResultsEarly ART initiation may substantially affect disease spread through a population.ConclusionsOur model provides a multi-scale, systems-based approach to evaluate the broader implications of therapeutic strategies

FORTY YEARS OF CHANGE IN SOUTHWESTERN BEE ASSEMBLAGES

    Get PDF
Changes in a regional bee assemblage were investigated by repeating a 1970s study from the U.S. Southwest of bees visiting native sunflower (Helianthus annuus). Results showed declines in abundance and species richness of native bees and increases in non-native Apis mellifera. Climate data indicate drought increased over the 40-year period, favoring introduced and generalist species. Experimental placement of A. mellifera in an area of low A. mellifera density in New Mexico reduced native bee visitation, but improved reproduction in H. annuus plants. Meta-analytic models comparing pollination effectiveness in specialist versus generalist, native versus non-native, and native pollinators versus introduced A. mellifera indicated no support for greater specialist effectiveness, but higher effectiveness of native bumble bees (Bombus spp.) compared to non-native pollinators, especially A. mellifera. Changes in pollinator species composition, particularly replacement of native pollinators by introduced A. mellifera, affect plant reproduction and may cascade to changes in plant community composition
