    J/psi production in p-A collisions at 158 and 400 GeV: recent results from the NA60 experiment

    The NA60 experiment has studied muon pair production in p-A and In-In collisions at the CERN SPS. We present new results on nuclear effects on J/psi production in p-A at 158 GeV, the same energy used for collecting A-A data at the SPS. We then compare nuclear effects with previous results from fixed target experiments, and with the results obtained from a p-A data sample taken by NA60 at 400 GeV. Based on the 158 GeV results, we calculate the expected J/psi suppression in In-In and Pb-Pb collisions due to cold nuclear matter effects, and we extract a new estimate for the anomalous suppression at SPS energies.     Controversies in ACL revision surgery: Italian expert group consensus and state of the art

    Background Revision ACL reconstruction is a complex topic with many controversies and not-easy-to-make decisions. The authors' aim is to provide some feasible advice that can be applied in daily clinical practice with the goal of facilitating the decision-making process and improving the outcomes of patients subjected to revision ACL reconstruction. Methods A national survey with seven questions about the most controversial topics in revision ACL reconstruction was emailed to members of two societies: SIOT and SIAGASCOT. The participants' answers were collected, the most recent literature was analyzed, and a consensus was created by the authors, according to their long-term surgical experience. Conclusions The decision-making process in revision ACL reconstruction starts with a standardized imaging protocol (weight-bearing radiographs, CT scan, and MRI). One-stage surgery is indicated in almost all cases (exceptions are severe tunnel enlargement and infection), while the choice of graft depends on the previously used graft and the dimensions of the tunnels, with better clinical outcomes obtained for autografts. Additional procedures such as lateral extra-articular tenodesis in high-grade pivot-shift knees, biplanar HTO in the case of severe coronal malalignment, and meniscal suture improve the clinical outcome and should be considered case by case

    The Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test: Discriminative Values in a Naturalistic Cohort

    Background: Neuropsychological assessment is still the basis for the first evaluation of patients with cognitive complaints. The Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT) generates several indices that could have different accuracy in the differential diagnosis between Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other disorders. Objective: In a consecutive series of naturalistic patients, the accuracy of the FCSRT indices in differentiating patients with either mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to AD or AD dementia from other competing conditions was evaluated. Methods: We evaluated the accuracy of the seven FCSRT indices in differentiating patients with AD from other competing conditions in 434 consecutive outpatients, either at the MCI or at the early dementia stage. We analyzed these data through the receiver operating characteristics curve, and we then generated the odds-ratio map of the two indices with the best discriminative value between pairs of disorders. Results: The immediate and the delayed free total recall, the immediate total recall, and the index of sensitivity of cueing were the most useful indices and allowed to distinguish AD from dementia with Lewy bodies and psychiatric conditions with very high accuracy. Accuracy was instead moderate in distinguishing AD from behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia, vascular cognitive impairment, and other conditions. Conclusion: By using odd-ratio maps and comparison-customized cut-off scores, we confirmed that the FCSRT represents a useful tool to characterize the memory performance of patients with MCI and thus to assist the clinician in the diagnosis process, though with different accuracy values depending on the clinical hypothesis

    Final results of the tests on the resistive plate chambers for the ALICE muon arm

    Abstract The trigger for the ALICE muon spectrometer will be issued by single-gap, low resistivity bakelite resistive plate chambers (RPCs). The trigger system consists of four 5.5 × 6.5 m 2 RPC planes arranged in two stations, for a total of 72 detectors. One hundred and sixteen detectors have been assembled and tested in Torino. The tests have been performed with the streamer mixture developed for heavy ion data-taking. The tests include: the detection of gas leaks and parasitic currents; the measurement of the efficiency with cosmic rays, with particular regard to the uniformity of the efficiency throughout the whole active surface, with a granularity of about 2 × 2 cm 2 ; the measurement of the dark current and of the mean and localised noise rate. All the RPCs produced have been characterised. Among them, the detectors to be finally installed in ALICE and some spare have been selected; 17% of all the produced detectors have been discarded. A short description of the test set-up is given. The results of the tests are presented, with particular regard to the performance of the selected detectors

    Azimuthal anisotropy of charged jet production in root s(NN)=2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions

    We present measurements of the azimuthal dependence of charged jet production in central and semi-central root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions with respect to the second harmonic event plane, quantified as nu(ch)(2) (jet). Jet finding is performed employing the anti-k(T) algorithm with a resolution parameter R = 0.2 using charged tracks from the ALICE tracking system. The contribution of the azimuthal anisotropy of the underlying event is taken into account event-by-event. The remaining (statistical) region-to-region fluctuations are removed on an ensemble basis by unfolding the jet spectra for different event plane orientations independently. Significant non-zero nu(ch)(2) (jet) is observed in semi-central collisions (30-50% centrality) for 20 <p(T)(ch) (jet) <90 GeV/c. The azimuthal dependence of the charged jet production is similar to the dependence observed for jets comprising both charged and neutral fragments, and compatible with measurements of the nu(2) of single charged particles at high p(T). Good agreement between the data and predictions from JEWEL, an event generator simulating parton shower evolution in the presence of a dense QCD medium, is found in semi-central collisions.     Production of He-4 and (4) in Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S=2.76 TeV at the LHC

    Results on the production of He-4 and (4) nuclei in Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S = 2.76 TeV in the rapidity range vertical bar y vertical bar <1, using the ALICE detector, are presented in this paper. The rapidity densities corresponding to 0-10% central events are found to be dN/dy4(He) = (0.8 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.3 (syst)) x 10(-6) and dN/dy4 = (1.1 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.2 (syst)) x 10(-6), respectively. This is in agreement with the statistical thermal model expectation assuming the same chemical freeze-out temperature (T-chem = 156 MeV) as for light hadrons. The measured ratio of (4)/He-4 is 1.4 +/- 0.8 (stat) +/- 0.5 (syst). (C) 2018 Published by Elsevier B.V.Peer reviewe
